Look I do agree with you on some points. As someone who isn't making any money off of this hoby yet, I personally don't use 90% of the sales, simply because I can't afford it. It also doesn't help that our currency is in the dumps, but I have still managed to pick up some incredible deals. A few days ago Daz just handed out a $5 voucher for nothing. I picked up V7 for about $1 a few weeks before that, and PC+ prices are insanely good. I think Daz does cater to the pro's, because that's where the money is, and they are a business but there is still a lot for the rest of us too.
As someone who is trying to become a vendor, I basically spend every night, working between 11pm and 4am on content, (after working all day) and so far it's taken me a week to produce a small building. It will probably take another week and a half to complete it. I'm not new to this. I've probably been doing it on and off for about 6 years now. In the end, Daz will take 50% off of whatever it sells for. So if most people buy it when it's 60% off, (excluding daz discounts) I will end up getting 20% of the list price. That's a whole lot of work, for very little return. I will need to produce content as fast as I can, and hopefully build up enough items to one day earn enough to make a living on this. it could take years of hard work before that happens. Doing this has made me appreciate that if I want to continue to see such high quality work in the future, that vendors must be well compensated, or they will just drift off into other fields. So when someone does give a good discount, I really appreciate it, but never expect it.
Btw if you don't like the buy one get a discount deals, you probably wont appreciate the march sale. As far as I know, the big sales events are all "punch card", "stack prices," "buy a new product every day to qualify," sales that last a month.
Too true. I can do texture work, I can do modelling work, but I have absolutely no clue how to do good rigging. I swear it's all done by magic and fairy dust.
There is a purpose of not being rigged, their customers uses 3Dmax, Maya, Lightwave, Modo, Blender, Softimage, Unity, UnrealEngine, and each one have it's own rigging setup, and not all needs to be rigged if only need a simple, but realistical and accurate prop. we assume we are talking about *turbosquid*, I don't know another expensive and vast 3d store in the planet, there is anothers but content is pretty limited. No fairy dust - I use a magic hat I got from some rampaging snowman, who declared he'd "Be back again someday!"
Umm...so that's where it ended up...I wanted that thing, but oh well, I guess it has a good home.
I have a simple solution to all my Daz problems...
I'm going to win the lottery, then I can buy my entire wishlist in a single go reguardless of price.
Now I just need to start playing the lottery
I would buy a computer that would make Vray FLY....then probably still render with Cycles, Luxrender, 3Delight (not really needing the same stuff as Vray) and yeah, Vray (it either has or will be getting OSL support...so I could even use the same shaders in it and 3DL...)
As someone who has been here since before V4 was released; prices are not high, imo. If anything they used to be higher. Nowadays you pay say 15-25 for a product that you used to pay 35 for. And you get better morphs (extra shaping and movement morphs was considered to be a luxury), better bending, etc. And thanks to Daz and the Genesis figures everything works a lot better for me. Eveything is easier than ever.
I'm surprised prices have not gone higher because it has for just about everything else in our society. I have been thinking about doing this for a living for years. But when I also think about the large amount of time and work you have to put down into it, time I don't have because of work. Just testing that everything works take like half the time, my enjoyment comes from creating the meshes, not doing a lot of QA. And that fact that at the end of the day I would probably just break even makes me decide to just push forward that dream to another day.
