Those strawberries sure look good! smiley

Lunch time!  Sent out for potstickers, egg drop soup, and pork in garlic sauce.  Tomorrow: canned soup and peanut butter on Wheat Thins, in penance for today.  indecision

Bleah.. intestines rumbling up a storm.. thinking about going home where I can be near a bathroom in case anthing decides to go horribly wrong. frown

Pork in garlic sauce was full of sugar.  I think I won't be ordering entree's from this place any more, they put sugar in almost everthing.  None in the potstickers or soup, though!

Sigh.. I could be writing.  I need to sit down and come up with a career transition plan soon, before I lose it and do something radical and fairly unintelligent! surprise

Complaint: I just received a $1,777.00 hospital bill for a short situation I had last July.  I thought everything had been paid.  sad Why, oh why does it take 9 months for a bill get out of the hospital?  Is it gestating? surprise

Don't get that cast wet on the bank run!  Or is the cast off now?

    Dana

No, darn cast is on until the 27th. of this month, argh! angry

It stayed dry, thankfully the jump into and out of the can was quick and I waited until the rain was very, very slow.. so dodged the bullet!!! smiley

Once the cast is off it's Ace bandages until the blood stupid prothesis gets made.. I am sooooo feaking sick of not being able to walk.. that's got a lot to do with feeling crabbity. indecision

Oh, good!  And I can understand...though not fully...being crabby because of the foot thing and not being able to walk.  I think I'd go crazy.  Could you drive?  That would be the last straw for me.  I don't like being the passenger, I like being the driver.  Not really a control issue, just a not trust other's driving issue.  So many idiots on the road.  I know I'm a good driver.  I don't know that about too many others.  Some of my friends, and family, scare me as drivers.  I'd almost rather get out and walk.  laugh

    Dana

I can't drive because my right eye is shot from a hiking accident (I fell down a mountainside in the redwoods on the California coast, what a mess) and my depth perception past about 10-12 fet is gone.. everything looks like a painting. frown Laser surgery isn't likely to help much, according to my doc at the time, and could make it worse (!!), not to mention insurance doesn't cover it and we're looking at about $50,000.  Forget it!  $50K is a LOT of cab rides.

None of this affects my ability to program, compose music, or even dabble in computer art.  It DOES dramatically restrict where I can live and work, but not so much that it's a huge impediment.. I just need to have good public transit or reliable/afordable cab service. smiley  Between the Web, delivery services, and the taxi I can actually live pretty darn well despite the vision (and now foot) thing.

So, for the past 9 yars I've walked everwhere and taken the bus, and being "trapped" not able to just jump up, grab a bus, and go shop/party/hike/get entertainment is driving me frigginnutz!!! angryangry And Austin has some beautiful parks, creeks, and a river or two right on the bus lines!!! ARGHHHHHH HATEFUL CAST HATE HATE!! angryangry

While I can get the knee scooter on the bus, the tires are slick, hard plastic and the thing has no shocks - unless the road/trail/sidewalk is close to perfectly smooth, it's a real hellride.  But in the grocery store or drug store, look out! I'm hell on wheels, I move way faster than anyone on foot!! devil

    Anyway, TMI, sorry...blush

That sucks about your eye!  Sorry.  Well, you don't have too much longer to wait for the cast to come off, do you?  I know it seems like forever.  Thankfully I've never had such an accident while hiking.  Never hiked Mt. Washington, but we have gone on some good hikes with some rough going part way.  We did Canon Mt. one year.  A few times we did a trail called Arethusa Falls on Rte. 112 in New Hampshire.  Got lost on the way back...twice.  First time it was getting dark, the trail disappeared and we ended up on the road.  Didn't know which way to the parking lot.  She saw a sign and said, "I recognize that sign...that way!"  Luckily a park ranger saw us in picked us up...we were going in the wrong direction!  Dark.  Nothing but mountains and Moose and fox and bear...and us waltzing down the road in the wrong direction.  Needless to say, I don't count on her directions anymore.  laugh

...I thought they gave you one of those electric scooters.

Yeah I've seen the knee scooters.  Some have as large a footprint as a powered wheelchair.

Hopefully the buses you have there are the "low rider" variety with the ramp that flips out. Those old lifts were terrible, took a lot of time, and frequently would break down.  Our entire fleet here in Portland is all pretty much "low riders" save for a few of the old high floor  buses they use for crowd relief on busy runs during the commute times.   All our LRT Trams are low floor as well with decent space for wheelchairs and scooters.

Yeah, my depth perception isn't the best either particularly in low light like heavily overcast days and evenings. The big block for me to driving however is the expense, it isn't just petrol, oil, and tyres, but the payments, interest, insurance, taxes/fees, maintenance (you can't really work on the new cars today), parking and repairs. Also, most dealers that will finance low income people tend to be total sleazeballs and you end up paying a boatload of interest on the financing. If you are even so much as a couple days late with your payment, they begin to threaten you with repossession or filing judgements. Sub Prime auto financing (which is what these dealers use to hook customers in) has become almost as predatory as payday loans.

How do you fight something like this?  I get hoplessly confused whenever I try to understand what my policy covers and doesn't cover. (I'm sure that's part of their deviousness).  Is there some sort of insurance victim advocacy group.  I'd pay 33% to such a group to reduce my bill by 67% just for them to write letters and perform professional bluffing.

...another  hot hot day (for this time of year) in store today.

"Officially" hit 87º at the airport yesterday, was 98º in my neighbourhood (lots of paving, and multi floor buildings which trap the heat in along with not even a breeze).  Was pretty warm last nigh, hard to sleep. Need to go to the storage locker and get my bug box fan.  Also looking for two of those dual fan inserts that you can put in an open window.

Slowly cooling down over the next couple days and by the weekend chilly, windy, and rainy when of course I have to go somewhere

    .

House next door getting major renovations, new extension with garage and new siding resulting in annoying noise in the mornings.  They better get that siding on (or at least the layer of waterproof "house wrap" that goes underneath) in the next couple days before the rain moves in or the whole structure might end up prone to mould a few years from now.

...for me it usually turned out usually to be a simple error on the individual doctor's office or clinic's part as they didn't to enter my policy number into their billing database.  When I would contact my provider in such cases, they would get everything straightened out.

Ugh, lost in the dark!  And going the wrong way.. dang.. that coud have ended up far worse..surprise IThank heavens for Park Rangers!!

Yep, cast comes off next week, then in 2-3 weeks they should have my bolt-on pseudofootthing ready.. leather and metal brace/foot extension to help spread the weight off the short piece of foot left.  The end is in sight! smiley

The park was Muir Woods, there's a coastal trail there that leads up into the coastal range across the bay from San Fraancisco.. lovely trees, not many people on weekend mornings, and I needed a break.. but being beond stupid I didn't wear my hiking boots or carry my hiking stick, so when I hit some wet rocks it was WHEEEEEEE down the side of the mountain, bouncing off a tree or four.  Glad I stopped long before I got to the cliff edge, it's a long fall down the cliff straight into the Pacific!  Glad I didn't end up as fish food.

First, STAY COOL!  Dang it's hot up there!!! surprise

My ride is this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003VMAKVS/?tag=googhydr-20&hvadid=56676662323&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11736578546529140077&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_239m9xfbfk_b and it fits places a wheelchair would never make.  It's also super-light and rolls as if almost frictionless, which means I can go pretty fast if I want to.  An electric scooter would be nice but it would never work where I'm staying and insurance likely wouldn't cover it unless both feet got removed. frown

Austin buses mostly have the kneeling/ramp setup, which appears to work out.. mostly.  I'd have no problem geting on or off, but riding a hard-tired/no-shocks scooter to the stop would be painful. indecision The trip from the stop to he office is only 1/3 of  mile but it's all parking lot/roadside/gass lawn so the scooter would bog down or break a wheel.. ugh.

At this point, even if they could fix the eye I'd not buy a car, and for the reasons you stated - bloody things are a black hole that swallows money.  indecision

...so, just got the latest PC newsletter however my PC subscription expired in late February.  Very odd.

I still keep getting PC+ newsletters, too...and I still see the PC+ pricing on things in the store and in my wishlist.  Meh.  Mentioned it before, Chohole saw and commented.  Nothing changed.  I'm not worried, or complaining.  Maybe it's some kind of loyalty thing they're just not talking about.

I'd almost rather get out and walk.  laugh

Needless to say, I don't count on her directions anymore.  laugh

I used to wear hiking boots.  Several years back I found out that I was shopping for the wrong size shoe.  It's been a very long time since there have been actualy shoe salesmen in big department stores, and I haven't seen an actual shoe store except for PayLess, which I don't think does men's shoes.  But one year I was looking for dress shoes, and in JC Penney's.  There was a guy there who was an actual shoe salesman, and showed me how to properly measure my shoe size with that tool.  Turns out I was buying size 7 or 7.5, and I should have been getting size 8.  I always thought the hiking boots felt a little snug.  I thought it was supposed to fit that way to keep your foot stable.  After wearing 8 for a while, when I tried to put on the hiking boots, they actually hurt.  I guess my toes stretched out and then the smaller size was very uncomfortable.  We don't do those serious hikes much anymore.  Bad knee...just about zero cartilage left.  Although we did do a trail to the top of Killington a few years ago.  I was hurting, but the view was beautiful.  The cross trainers I wear do a good enough job.  But I wouldn't do a lot of trails with them...wet rocks, tough areas.  Maybe some day I'll have money to get some new hiking boots, the right size.  laugh
