As a 32 year surivor of the same job, I learned one important rule:

Never say anything that might increase your workload.

Thinking about Chinese food for lunch, kind of tired of chickien wings all the time.  Otherwie, it's microwve Campbell's chunky soup, which isn't really THAT bad.  I just need something more interesting since the coffee isn't working to maintain my interest in this mess.

The cloudy, dark weather isn't helping things a lot, either.

According to my money spreadsheet and the timing of all my medical work, I'm stuck in this job until the end of May. indecision

Feh.  Maybe pork in garlic sauce...

did they say anything about that list of complaints you sent them the other day?

thinkin of reminding them in next meeting i was a data warehouse manager and might know what i'm talking about, dunno, might be better to sit quiet.

I'm not going to complain any more, one thing out six got fixed and the rest ignored.  Meh.

13+ years here.  world has changed.  found this job through the old monsterboard.  remember monsterboard?

my fall back job was data entry.  days anyone needed data entry are over.   had a fulltime data entry job all i did was type addresses for cabbage patch dolls birthday cards.  who sending those dolls their birthday cards these days?

never got into the cabbage patch dolls, the vermont teddy bear.

Hell.. is other people's code. angry

A quick count shows this system pushing near 80 THOUSAND lines of code.. all of which I have to plow through.. and decipher..

I'm not getting paid enough for this job.  Way, way not far enough, and if I'd known I'd be doing this I'd never have taken the job.

If I can just last about six more weeks... frown

...hmmm clicking Quote no longer takes me down to the Leave a Comment window..

Anyways, Indeed, and often that workload is increased without a commensurate rise in remuneration.

...yeah all I seem to get from Monster today are referrals for truck driver and forklift operator jobs.

    ...and I don't even have a driver's licence.

Morning. Big wind came in the night and blew away all the dark clouds that were hanging around, is not necessarily a good thing but I guess if clouds aren't going to rain we might as well get a bit of sun in instead and right now the Aussie sun is doing its thing so that, today, the streets really do look if not paved then splashed with gold :)

I think my sleep study went well.

here is a drawing I did that I will color later today.  It is something I did with an HB pencil.  Will color with artist color chalk.  Not sure why the photos are on their sides instead of upright.  It is a cat girl.

non-complaint  feet are puffy but my ankles are normal. no grapefruit ankles.  i ate a banana split sundae last night. mebbe the bananas?  potassium the trick?  or the edamame, plain rice.

had a senior moment this morning. called the taxi to take me to bus stop.  all the way there and realized i couldn't see.  forgot my frikkin glasses.  had to taxi back home, back to bus stop.  he charged me for 2 trips, grateful.  paying 2 fares left me only 2 bucks to tip him with, >.<.

going back home, the buppies were out.  paused in my headlong hobble-dash to give 'em milkbones.  when i was leaving Iggy looked at me with his ears down.  buppy guilt-tripping me for going to work when he wanted me to playyy   come on lotto, momma needs to stay home and playyy squeaky balls.

There are two orms of documentation for this system: the users manual, and the code.  And the comments in the code are iffy at best, many saying things like "find a better way to do this" or "this is a kludge". indecision

I *totally* understand their need to figure out what the core of their product does.  I'm just not the right person for the job. frown

Five and a half more weeks.. welcome o the countdown!

A thousand lines of code is not a bit deal for me, I can crank that out in a couple of days.  I could even reverse-enginer that much in about the same amount of time.  But this system consists of several standalone apps plus operating system extensions and it's truly a nightmare of different people's styles. indecision  Figuring out where the shared code is, which algorithm is used where, keeping up on changes as this codebase is LIVE and it's being changed at the same time as I'm trying to document it.. it's all just stinky, runny bull poop. angry

Wednesday, Hump Day, kiss a camel! surprise

Rainy outside, thunderstorms all last night giving way to overcast and clouds looming threateningly overhead. Managed to get to work without getting the cast wet, though.  Should rain off and on for several days.

Payday Friday, pay bills, buy supplies, maybe have a little left for opening a savings account.  Next payday on the 29th., will be slightly short as I have 3 doctors appointments over the next 3 weeks! surprise One or blood tests, one for discussing the blood tests, and one to take this cast off.  Someime soon, an appointment to get a mold made of wht's left of the left foot to get the fake foot make.  It will look like a thin leather boot but be tight, supportive, and padded.. won't look anything like a foot, will look like a shoe of some kind.  I don't care how it looks as long as I can walk again!!

Maybe order my walking stick this weekend if I have any money left, otherwise it waits until next Payday.

    More coffee.. lots more coffee..

Oh, man...a moving target?  That stinks!  (as you said)

I try to write self-documenting code, even with the variable and function names.  Still, I put comments that describe what's going on as well.  I also put comments in with the date for modifications, declaring what was changed/added/removed.

    Hang in there, man.  smiley

Yep, self documenting code.  My assembler code was a work of beauty.  Formulas, philosophy of the technology, descriptions of the shortcuts taken, limitations of the algorithm,  logic behind the way it was coded.  I did a lot of shifts, rotates, masks, double indexed table lookups, structured code and doubly linked circular lists.  Without the descriptions of what I was doing nobody would have figured out WTH I was doing.  At one time coding was my art.  I could see the statue in the stone.  I was proud of what I'd created and I wanted it to be admired.   Was great for myself and when I was in the government world where code lasted longer than one year but in the commercial world I was only fooling myself.  In the commercial world nobody gave a fxxx and they just hired some kid to rewrite it in an interpretive language.  Someone who didn't give a thought about algorithm limits or error situations or reenterability or stateless algorithms or memory efficiency and speed.  Memory's cheap, speed is on the chip, anything that works today is good enough, fxxx the next guy.
