I have stack and stack of books on writing comic books. Sequential graphic storytelling (comics and graphic novels -- emphasis on the graphic) should be able to be understood with just the pictures. If your pictures need explanations for some one to follow your story, you’re not doing it right. After all, if I’d wanted to do a lot of reading I’d pick up a book.

I have two questions for you, can you summarize your story in one or two short paragraphs, and if you can’t then your story is probably too complex? Could you do your story with pictures alone, and have your reader understand what going on?

I'll note that visual novels are a different sort of thing than comics or graphic novels. (And even then there are some rather good ones which would go against that 'understood with just the pictures' guideline.) One of the conventions of the genre is that the characters are usually represented with a static image, so other than being able to see what that person looks like, you can't tell what's going on from the image and have to draw that from the text. You might have multiple images of the character for different emotions or the occasional dramatic effect, but they're more a visual reference than telling the story outright.

Some rather good VNs use methods of telling their story that are almost unique to the genre, such as Analogue: A Hate Story and its sequel Hate Plus, where the story comes out through examining the logs of a derelict colony ship, something that you can do in nearly any order, picking up the details as they come up. There are photos in the log, and you have one or two AI characters going through the logs with you, but their appearance doesn't change, you pick up their feelings from what they say.

It is important to understand, A Visual Novel is not a Graphic Novel. While VN's and GN's are very similar, A VN is to a GN what a GN is to daily paper comic strip. A VN is closer to a a Actual Book (albeit a Short Story) than a GN. The  Artwork or Interactions in a VN are secondary to the story, and often a VN has 20 or so background images with about 5 or 6 characters with 2 or 3 poses... very little can be told via the artwork alone. With a lot of work and creativity, this can be expanded on, but the real focus is the story. Think of a old school marionette show. You have a Limited field of View, with a few backgrounds and a couple puppets with very limited movement. Without the Storyteller, it would be very hard to really understand what's going on.

Now, in a Graphic Novel, I agree with you 100%, less is more and the artwork should tell the story. But that isn't what I was working on. I've read many things stating many GN's have become too wordy, and yes, I tend to not read lots in a GN. I can also understand there are those who aren't going to want to read a VN because it is wordy, but there are people who don't want to read the book either because there is a movie. This of course is all personal choice, and well, really has nothing to do with the possibility of a merger of Daz Studios with Unity.

Too bad there's not a place that you can buy little snippets of copy, poetry or prose, that you could download and use in your comics. It would be in categories like:

    SCIENTIFIC JARGON:
    • Ship scientest explains blackhole to crewmember,
    • Ship scientest explains blackhole to stupid crewmember,
    • Ship scientest explains blackhole to sexy crewmember (most popular).

    or

    WAR COMMANDS
    • Captain explains tactics to soldier
    • Captain explains tactics to stupid soldier
    • Captain explains tactics to sexy soldier (most popular)

Just kidding about this idea (unless you like it, in which case I own it).

Any how you kinda need dialog and story in games too, but maybe not as much. Good luck.

Actually, if you have the talent to create these things, and a method of licensing them, this would be a very good idea...

The problem however will be with licencing. I think you'd have to be on the honor system, and expect to be ripped off more than 50% of the time, because I think it would be nearly impossible to identify those instances where someone ligetimately came up with similar wording from those who stole your content....

However, I would use such a service, if the fees were reasonable, and I'm sure that I wouldn't be the only one.

It would have to be a free site then, You could contribute or download plot devices and scenarios as well as actual dialog. Mix and match, you know, the way Hollywood does.
