INstalling Freebies

So, I'm new to Daz.. and I've been running around collecting all the freestuff I can get my hands on to build an arsenal of stuff to do,

The problems arise..

So everything for Daz, mostly works.. still a few hickups, I assume it's not all smart content, and some stuff is for characters I dont have..

Everything from a website other then Daz, well.. it's not going so well.. at all.

I extract everything that comes in zip files and put them into

D:\Libraries\My Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Library\"extracted folder name" ie, D:\Libraries\My Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Library\3duBeachChair

Nothing is in smart content, so I find it using the content browser.. everything is burried in deep directory structures, and I click on everything one by one till the end, and what is there, nothing.. nothing ever comes up in the preview box, no file, etc to use.

Kind of getting really fustrated and I've only just begun.

My advice would be to make yourself somewhat familiar with the different folders under My Library, especially Runtime and its subfolders (especially Libraries).  When you open a zipped download, look at it and see what folders it has-you normally need to make things happen so that everything in the zipped download ends up in the section of My Library that corresponds to where it was in the zipped file.  You will sometimes find freebies that do not have the folder directory set up correctly-I think I've been guilty of that at different times-but once you have some experience putting everything where it needs to go, you can usually figure out the ones that aren't working right.

I have a tutorial on my website (see link below) which may help you to install things into the correct folders.

Moved to the Commons because it is not an offer of a freebie.

Also in the content library is the little box that has "Enter text to search by". While not very fast (especially the more stuff you get), it does help find stuff as long as you have an idea of what is in the name.

Also don't forget to click on the quad lines with the arrow and select "Scan known directories for files" This will find products that may have not been loaded into your content library list yet.

This is your problem if the item is in Poser or Daz Studio format. Content, in order to work on different machines, uses "relative paths" - the location of an item within the content directory without specifying the location of the content directory - so that the actual location of the content diectory isn't critical (as long as Daz Studio knows where it is). Here your content directory is D:\Libraries\My Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Library\ and the 3duBeachChair folder is throwing a spanner in the works. The Data folder and Runtime folder, and any other fodlers at the same level in the zip, need to go in the content dierctory (D:\Libraries\My Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Library\), not in a sub-folder - they should merge with the folders already there.

  • Whew... well after a few hours, I got about 90% of it installed right and sorted..

    Thanks :)
