Gia promos light tutorials
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msw2KyQBlug
Thanks everyone for the helpful tips and video links - I'm going to take a look at all of them, so your efforts are appreciated.
I do understand that its not Daz's job to bestow us all with amazing artistic talent. They just provide the tools and its up to us to work with them to produce something great. I just think it'd be really helpful if they produced some more tutorials that were more than just the very basic ones that currently exist. The best way to learn something is by example, after all.
Will - that Sharpen tool is amazing! Can't believe I missed that one. Definitely gonna be using it in future, thanks.
The thing is, even when I follow tutorials exactly -- and I do mean exactly -- I never seem to get exactly the same results as the tutorial maker. And I can rarely figure out why.
I always include the promo lightsetup that I used to make the promos for my products, in the scene files.
Destiny'sGarden:
So if I buy Inane Glory's Studio Bundle, I should be able to load the Genesis 2 female, a Victoria character morph, with a fancy dress and accessories, strike a pose, and click on a preset and render and I will approximate the results shown in the ads? That appears to be what you and the ad for the product are saying. Also, as shown in the video in the ad, it appears relatively easy to move the three lights around for different lighting effects, change backgrounds, and so on. Correct?
If this is true, then it would seem to me that the solution to the problem of duplicating the results in the ads has been answered. If it is true and I can duplicate the results in the ad, I will be a very, very happy person and post some samples on this thread.
Does it matter if I render in 3Delight or IRAY?
Heres a couple of tips I've picked up whilst busily giving art a bad name:
1) If you try to make an interior scene with windows where there is light coming in from outside and you use the Iray dome (or an HDRI) as your outside light source - this will dramatically increase your render times compared to an interior scene with no windows and Scene Only lighting.
2) A good way I've found to increase the ambient lighting within a geometric interior set and lighten those dark shadows is to use a primitive torus as a light source. I create a torus with a wide hole in the centre and a very thin ring and add the emissive shader to it. Then I put it around the subject in the image and slightly above, wide enough so that its not seen within the camera frame (preferably wide enough to skim the outskirts of the room), and then set it to opacity 0.001 so that it causes no reflections but still gives off light. What this does is evenly brighten the room without making it look like theres a specific light source responsible. Then I use the emissive planes and spotlights as the main highlight lights.
Hmmm ... guess adding the links would have been more helpful eh.

Edited to add notes.
patience55 - I'm trying to understand this comment made by you earlier. Were you suggesting that I was being rude to Scavenger somehow, or didn't want their comments? Because I assure you that thats not the case.
Not to Scavenger, no. I have in the past received PMs from shy folk so basically I just wanted to make it clear that [generally speaking] "everybody" is allowed to post ... it was also later than I realized and so possibly need for sleep didn't help my wording, pardon.
Edit: Let's try this again. This was not directed at you at all. It was Scavenger that made the initial comments I wanted my shy friends to not be overly concerned about.
Oh, ok. Now I understand, no worries. Yes, all suggestions are welcome.
This is the bundle that has three 3Delight sets (Photo Studio Point and Shoot 1,2,3) and Point and Shoot Iray is the light rigs from those sets modified for Iray. IDG Portrait Studio Iray, that I linked to before is (obviously, lol) for Iray only. http://www.daz3d.com/inaneglory-s-photo-studio-point-and-shoot-bundle
I did a few screen grabs of a small sampling of some of the thumbnails. There is much more included than what is shown below. Yes, it really is as easy as load one of the light sets, click on a light pose preset, and the light should look exactly like the thumbnail picture. We definately don't do any postwork on our promos for light products. Surface settings are another matter, but if you have been grabbing InaneGlory's freebies this past week, you have the skin settings he uses for his Iray promos.
If you do pick up any of the sets, I really hope you find them easy to use. A lot of effort has gone into making them as user friendly as possible. You can contact me or InaneGlory by forum PM if you have questions about any of our products.
cheers!
What I really can't grasp with DS is how to light a whole room environment well and also light a figure within it in a flattering way (eg with 3-point lighting or something) without the room lighting interfering too much with the figure lighting and ruining it. I can light both things separately fine but both together is a real headache.
The way I've been trying to handle this so far is by trying to create good room lighting that is also very flattering on the figure, but that is really hard to do. I wonder if thats what the professional artists do or if they have another method that makes it easier to separate the two.
What I've done that SEEMS to work is light the room so it looks about right, see how the figure looks. If the figure looks a bit dim/washed out (which is usually the case), I then add off-camera lighting, typically off to one side and a little in front of the figure. Generally a spotlight set to Disk at about 100-200 diameter.
The room then provides some softer ambient lighting, and then the spot helps highlight details and make the character 'pop' a bit from the background.
If I'm having trouble with the figure just sort of blending into the environment (which can happen), I might dim the room a little and/or adjust the depth of field of the camera. (I don't ALWAYS use DOF, but it's often a good idea and helps draw the viewer to your subject).
Yeah, thats what I try to do too but lately I've been finding that the rooms require so much light to look right that it doesn't leave any wiggle room for lighting the figure in a way that'll make it pop (not without totally over-exposing him/her). I suppose I could just dim the room lights, but then it looks like they're fumbling about in a darkened room looking for the light-switch lol. Perhaps I'll try that out a bit more though - nothing wrong with a bit of mood lighting.
I'm starting to understand that I'm using more or less the right methods here, but its my total and utter lack of artistic talent thats hampering my endeavours. Disconcerting...
Best way to light a room without it affecting the main subject is by using an ambient light. In 3DL this can be done using UE2 lights or with the advanced ambient light from AoA. In iRay ambient light comes automatically no matter what lights you use.
Talent is over-rated. Practice practice practice.
You cheat, generally i hide anything that can't be seen in the scene for one, so I dont have to worry about light only coming through windows or crap like that. If you stick a smal plain color image in the environment map under render settings, it does a similar thing to one of 3delights enviroment maps, but it can't pass through walls, so det rid of any walls you dont see.
Generally I light the figure with everthing else hidden, add the scenery, make sure the senery isn't blocking any of the lights do a test render, and then add a nice big soft area light anywhere that things look too dark.
And to the original topic, How's this boys and girls.
It didn't even take that long (admittedly its abot a 1/10 the size of the actual promos)
You can't...ask any photographer. You need to pick one or the other.
What is the focus of your shot...is it the model or the room?
If it's the model, you make the room basic enough to be recognizable as a room. Then you concentrate your efforts on the model.
+1
You have convinced me by your support to buy the bundle. Your offer of help is encouraging. I think I will take the plunge and report the results of my first efforts on this thread.
One question: if I load the components of the scene into a standard DAZ view (the default view that comes up when you open DAZ Studio (such as figure, hair, props, and so on), is there anything that I need to remove or change such as default lights or camera before I select a preset from your package? I do not really understand very much about default cameras and lighting that DAZ Studio provides when you open the program or any settings that need to be changed to improve the rendered results.
If you are using 3Delight, you don't need to change anything from default. If you are using Iray, you will want to change the Environment to Scene only. The lights automatically load up with a headlamap blocker that blocks the default light in the scene.
I'd recommend to start with the Iray set, pick one of the Point and Shoot 2 sets, and then whatever preset you like from the folder shown. If you are using Smart Content, I'd also strongly suggest to switch to Content Library view to get the lights set up. We are going to be working with QA to make these sets Smart Content friendly, but as it is right now the folder view is much more manageable.
Best of luck.
What is the best way to contact you so that we can continue our discussion offline? I bought the bundle and am having problems using the product. My email address is rnollman AT yahoo.com.
You mentioned that I could contact you by forum PM. Stupid me, but what is forum PM?
Click her name under her avatar, then hit the message button on the screen you go to.
Actually, you don't need the link, the video is there if you click the image. However, I would highly recommend when you use SHARE urls from YouTube, that you add a note that the reader should "CLICK THE IMAGE TO SEE VIDEO". :)
I sent you an email from my hotmail address.
