I'm realizing at least one problem is that it's easy to get lazy about Iray lighting.

With 3DL, bad lighting is immediately obvious. With Iray, bad lighting still looks pretty neat, but unsatisfying.

Yeah...there is that.  And it doesn't have to be 'bad'...just inadequate.

To whit, the following image (which took 9 freakin hours and still was only at 75% convergence), there are all these fiddly details of wrinkles and so forth. Utterly gone. They show up easily in 3DL...

And then I put a spotlight underneath, aiming to the face, and bam, THERE are the details. So I definitely need to practice lighting.

I'm far from pro when it comes to lighting...but I've been extremely happy with DimensionTheory's Iradience Light Probes. It has both hard and soft lights in a wide variety of colors and directions. Very easy to set up;1-click is usually sufficient, though I occasionally like to shift the rotation of the dome a bit to get the most intense lights coming from a different angle. And it renders more quickly than any other lighting package I've tried.
