Just a quick question. I picked up Carrara a while back in a sale, but I haven't really bothered to mess with it much. Before I spend any money on items for it in this sale, can anyone tell me what the advantages are of using it instead of DAZ Studio? Or is it the kind of thing that I might use to create stuff to import into Studio, like I could create a figure in Studio and then put it into a scene I would create in Bryce?

Carrara can do a lot of things DS can't, but there is a larger learning curve than DS (there are also things that DS can do easier/better than Carrara). Carrara is my favorite 3D app, it's more of a general purpose 3D tool, where DS is mostly focused on posing and rendering premade content (which Carrara can do as well). It would probably be best to ask the question over in the Carrara Forum for the best info (they don't wander over over to this forum a lot). In the mean time here are a few links that might give you a bit more info.

You could model objects in Carrara and then import them into Studio via the .obj format. You could even use Carrara's Model in Assembly room feature to model clothes or other items around a DAZ figure and then import the model into Studio and use the Figure Set-up tools (or whatever they're called) to create conforming items.

Studio has had some very nice advances lately, but many of them require paid plugins, which is great for the plugin developers, but not for the artist on a budget. There are some features in Carrara Studio can do, if you buy a plugin. There are some features in Carrara that you can't get a plugin for Studio at any price.

Some of the things I like best about Carrara are true volumetric clouds, robust and much more capable replication (instancing) than Studio, many different types of tweeners, physics, true dynamic hair that can be animated, a very powerful shading and texturing system, atmospheres, plants and the modelers, such as the terrain generator, vertex modeler, spline modeler and meta-ball modeler.

To get a good idea of what Carrara can do, look at the links in this thread which aggregates past Carrara challenges and their WIP threads. You'll get an idea of what users of varying experience and perspectives create with Carrara.

Attached are an example of a procedural skin shader that I created in Carrara that uses no image maps to generate color, bump specular effects, etc. I did use two distribution maps to delineate a soft transition between the lip and nipple shading domains and that is it. The eyelashes and eyebrows are Dynamic Hair.

The other attachment is an outdoor scene which uses an atmosphere, volumetric clouds, custom terrain, dynamic hair, replicators and multiple Poser figures including the buildings. Nothing is forced perspective or scaled up or down. The sense of distance is real, or as real as a virtual set can be. ;-)

attached are an example of a procedural skin shader that I created in Carrara that uses no image maps to generate color, bump specular effects, etc.

I am waiting for the day when we can free our hard-drives of "image maps"... 90% of them are redundant now, pure bloated duplicate files without any actual unique data within them, just regurgitated duplicates for the sake of having them present, individually, per model. Like when people just greyscale a UV to make a bump or specular or gloss, when they should be checking a box that says, "use source mapping values", or just not adding any images at all. (Then DAZ, without thinking, just accepts the duplicate images and doesn't smartly "remove them".)

With the models having this much detail, it still blows my mind when they paint shadows and paint solid colors for things like skin and muscle-tone. (Instead of setting those "modifiers" on their own materials in the correct places. Then they wonder why everything looks fake and can't get lighting right, when they have burned-on fake lighting/shadows, that opposes the production lights setup.)

We need more generators (code) that does the standard "regurgitation things", like flesh-tone adjustments (cheeks redder, eye-sockets less red, veins, pores where pores are normally seen, oily surfaces where oily surfaces normally exist...) Then just letting us set the intensity for those generic things and use images to tweak them, if needed. (Greyscale).

Soon we will have more smart-models like DAZ has, where they just know what needs to exist, and it exists on all variations. I have no doubt that DAZ will be the one leading the way, even if it is not the "best implementation available". (It isn't, some programs do some of this stuff better already, but DAZ does it faster and with less hands getting dirty in the process.)

Now, if they would extend this technology to the program itself, that would make it 1,000,000 times better than all the other programs. Consolidation to have one program "do it all", just leads to over-complexity and the majority of things cluttering the UI, that no single individual will ever use, in one sitting. Simple isolation and designation within the program, or by linked-programs, is what all these things need. That is what we all do now, but the hard way... (Plug-ins and Bridges and multiple programs.)

Honestly, DAZ could have just made the models editable as a plugin-sister component, and just spit-out the final "temp-object" into carrara, since you can only edit one item at one time, and once edited, it doesn't change. As opposed to making it integrated into the world-space, physically. But that's another story for another day. I am still waiting for a web-viewer and HTML5 VRML tool from DAZ, to bring this whole program to a new level. (Actually preview the items before you buy them, in 3D... True stereoscopic 3D if desired. Right in a web-browser, without plugins. Yes, I am eyeballing DAZ's UNITY content creation thing, just for that novelty.)

Looking forward to trying Carrara, all the same. Just because I like the content management system I see in there. It reminds me of all the old programs I used, 20 years ago, before everyone went haywire with tabs and trees and clutter-components, when simple tag-sorting and groups worked fine. It should never matter where the content is located, or what it is named... As if the names we make, which are cryptic, have any valuable use that a simple unique number could not have handled. Put the crap into meta-data, where it belongs, not into file-names that just lead to duplicates and errors and potentially replace other files, or demand clutter-folders in clutter-folders in clutter-folders, and defeats the whole purpose of names when you can't find the file to see the name in the first place.

    [Rant over]

++100 for those renderings and looking forward to the Carrera sales. (That is all I came here to say.)

I have enjoyed Carrara and found the transition very easy for me.

I bought the All of the Carrara Training videos by Infinate Skills Created by Phil Wilkes here on the Forums.

    http://www.daz3d.com/carrara-8-5-tutorial-video-11-5-hours-long-instant-digital-download

Carrara will also import a lot of formats that Studio does not. such as LWO Lightwave formats.

To me Shaders are Awesome and the other features that have been mentioned.

Currently there is also the beta of the LUX Core render available on the Carrara forum and it does make some wonderful images.

Carrara was my favorite 3D software. Then Daz Studio Iray came along, PBR (physically based Rendering) and PBM physically based Materials.

    This changed everything.

The industry is heading towards PBR and PBM. ( Daz Studio, Substance Painter, Substance Designer, Modo 901, Maya 2016 to name a few)

But Carrara's development has stopped. Modeling in Carrara is less than ideal. Old tools, old way of doing things and frustrating. I jumped ship to Studio because of Iray.

Very nice Misty. Get to know the spline modeler and you can make your own very easily as well!

installing Skies and Lightdomes vol2 is a couple of steps to add folders.
i never added a Misc folder before, it has a thing to select file type for backgrounds. excellent readme.

    the pins.

For a procedural shader you don't really need to UV it, as Carrara uses a default planar projection on the spline model. Either way, as a spline model, you can't edit the UVs. If you need to do that, then you would convert it to a vertex model.

what's the Carrara equivalent to min.shader in Poser?

trying to figure out what the filter slider does in the render settings. def is 75%,i changed it to 90% can't really see what effect it has?

how do set the camera to 35mm?

  • MistaraMistara Posts: 38,675

does the photon map count in render settings effect indirect lighting?

it was at 5000, i changed it to 20,000

  • evilproducerevilproducer Posts: 9,056

Most of these questions can be better answered in the Carrara forum.

I think the default is 35mm, but I could be wrong.

Photon count is for the GI options, so Skylight and Indirect Light. Not sure how it works, if at all, with AO. Caustics has its own controls for photons.
