Ironically, it's the androgynous nature of Genesis that makes it so useful to me at least. However, I'm finding That there are many places a M4/V4 is as good if not better for what the scene calls for, and with autofit, I can use M4/V4, G1 and G2 clothing without issue. I didn't expect to purchase as much M4/V4 stuff as I have, and often just a little re-texturing, it looks as good as new stuff. As for right now, I only bought V7 as a coupon, as by buying it, I saved $40 over what I would have paid without it, and I saved even more in the recent add-on sale, with many items purchased for under $.80. Otherwise G3 will sit next to my rarely used G2 characters, at least for the forseeable future. .
If I had stopped upgrading years ago, I'd still be running Martin Hash's Animation Master v2 on my first computer I bought in 1994 (A:M was $695 then). I bought the first boxed version of Poser at Egghead Software I can remember being excited when I saw Zygote's models, then DAZ came along. I used to attend a local Lightwave user group meeting (at an Amiga store) where we watched early episodes of "Reboot" to see where the state of CG animation was. I can remember a fellow who was the local Autodesk distributor trying to get me to drop a few grand on their programs (which would have required a loan besides a serious upgrade in computers). I'm used to the upgrades now, and have seen amazing advances every time. It's hard to stay in the past. And DAZ makes it more affordable.
Don't get me wrong, Upgrading is important, but sometimes it isn't needed immediately. I have a friend who has "had to" upgrade his phone the minute each new Iphone has come out... Sometimes, a persons needs can still be met with older product, and the newest item, while nice to have all the bells and whistles, just doesn't warrant the cost. Daz is by in large cheaper than many, but is isn't "mandatory" to upgrade as soon as the newest models come out, so long as my basic needs are being met, I will be happy sticking with what I have. When they are no longer good enough, then I'll upgrade.
..and I love those morphs, use them a lot.
As to rendering speed between 3DL and Iray. 3DL with just the normal Daz lights or AoA's advanced lights will beat Iray in CPU mode every time. However, Iray also employs GI which is only available with Uber Environment. Swap out the AoA/Daz lights for UE and then (at least in my experience) Iray is actually A bit faster.
Also Iray performs better if all the surfaces are already Iray shaders and/or 3DL ones converted to Iray manually before rendering.
I do agree. I tend to morph everything out of all recognition anyway. I guess that I too have fallen for the idea that perhaps some characters are sculpted beyond what can be achieved using morphs. Maybe that's a myth but, if so, at least I haven't wasted a huge price tag on the myth. I rarely buy anything at list price anyhow - I always have an eye on the sales. That said, I have a library bulging with items that I paid little for but are, nonetheless, hardly ever used.
As for Joanie, I don't do commissions - I just do this for a hobby and I like to put everyday people in everyday situations. May seem boring but that's my thing. Sometimes the situations get a little "adult" and I prefer real looking people rather than idealised amazons or catwalk queens. Joanie is one character I can use out-of-the-box, without spending hours morphing to my taste.
No one forced me buy studio this is true, but how many of us here make free models, scripts, utilities, morphs, etc for other users either by request or in our spare time because we like to give back to this software, or we offer technical support or documentation, or advice when there is none to be found from the parent company. Yes it's great software and yes free so people download it but there is also TONS of free content from users, who are not PA's, not vendors, not employees; users who make free content so other people keep using that software, spreading the word. So If you contribute to something even a simple opinion on something related to this software you have the right to express your opinions here whenever you see fit.

I would imagine that the technology has evolved to a new platform that will take a few years for even the product creators to catch up with... Given the range and flexibility being put into G3, I'd say this is going to be the last of the Genesis line of characters given the uber-realistic shape we now have, I see this new line is going to be 'the standard" and that by using the Iray technology for free they have essencially made potential professional graphic artist out of everyone that uses the software... The annoying thing is that some of us predicted DAZ3d would be doing just that... Leading the revolution still.
So now they've thrown all these great new tools at us and then we have the masters like Zev0 whose furiously working day and night for the next product I'm going to buy for the Gen 3 and I hear all the wonderful ideas about what people are wanting and I can see that just bringing the abilities of this new standard to light is going to take several years...
Victoria 7 and Mike 7 along with Iray and all the new tools still in devolopement insure this characters life for as long as people like getting paid and their art looked at... the next character Daz will come out with will only come out after dramatic improvements in all of our technogies.. I'm predicting this will be the standard for at least 5 years.
Great job DAZ3d and everybody still making content.
