I highly doubt it. Just as how PA's eventually phase-out of supporting older figures or texture styles, it's best to expect that 3DL rendering is now on that same path...

For me, if a product doesn't have 3DL renders I will not buy it. If DAZ has put that out as a requirement (which would be totally stupid on their part, bye-bye sales) they will move on and leave customers behind. It's more than reasonable to expect to see what the product looks like in an established render engine. Bring on the new, it's a good thing to offer different render engines, but for people who have fine tuned their style (certainly not me!) they should be able to see what they are getting in their renderer.

This also would help customer service reps, because of all the returns if they don't show 3DL and people take a leap of faith and buy it. I won't.

Well, at least 3DL promos. :) But hey, as long as the material preset will let me get the diffuse texture maps in the right place, I can fake it from there. :)

If DAZ has put that out as a requirement

I really do not get why people keep repeating this since it has been said over and over by PA's that it is untrue. DAZ does not dictate what sort of promos we do. They take the product based on them promos and we get sales based on promos, so yes we want them to be good. The closest DAZ gets to a requirment is telling us that the promos are not good enough for them to take the product without new promos. That is ALL they do as far as our promos go.

The do not tell us what programs we will or will not support. Most PA's choose to support what they support based on what they are comfortable working and how much time it will take vs income from additional support. I'm pretty sure that as long as 3DL or Iray support is financially viable PA's and DAZ will continue to support both where possible.

What about PA's that don't do their own promo art? Such as some DAZ originals?

Personally I don't see the choice of renderer for the promos as being a decision maker in whether or not I buy a product. I have bought many older products where the promo quality is pretty poor by today's standards, and were probably done in something like Poser 4, or DS 2 or 3. Whilst seeing nice promo art is great, what I am looking at is the quality of the modelling, and the detail in the textures. (In addition of course to things like extra morphs, and naturally the most important question of all, whould I ever use/need the product). Unless the promo art has used some sort of toon shader, the modelling and texture detail are apparent regardless of renderer chosen.

Poor modelling, like having non rounded sharp edges for buildings or other props are easy to spot, and generally what make me decide if a product is worth the price or not. Likewise with the textures.

I am not saying we should not have promos in 3DL or other renderers, but I don't think it should be the deal breaker when it comes to deciding to buy or not. I am sure many of you have been around long enough to remember the time when the majority of promos where done using Poser's firefly, but I suspect that did not stop DS only users from buying those products.

And as to the fears of 3DL going the way of V3...not anytime soon.

I wish I could find it, but it was mentioned in one of the Iray threads that 3DL was recently renewed...and if I recall, it's usually a multi-year deal.

It was mentioned by DAZ Spooky if I recalled correctly in one of the earliest iRay threads created to announce its arrival.

Edit: What Spooky said was that DAZ have recently renewed the agreement with the makers of 3Delight, but as they were a separate company to DAZ and so could go bust, discontinue the renderer etc, then DAZ could not 100% guarantee that it would remain as a part of DAZ studio for ever. However he said there was no plans at all to remove it.

I knew it was one of the dev team...just couldn't remember which one, so I couldn't find the exact quote...and the last time it came up, I think it was Rob that mentioned the mult-year part (but that was around the time 4.0 was coming out, so that was on the old forums...which was about 3 yrs ago)

Um no, 3Delight still has a much needed place, be like asking Smith Micro to dump Firefly for Octane/Luxrender it is just silly for them to do that.. You have to remember not everyone can afford $1000+ video cards (Nvidia Titan X comes to mind) or have super expensive PC's/Mac's, while other people like using AMD/ATI video cards..
    ....

Um no, the Nvidia cards are not all $1000+. You can still get a decent one for under that much.
My second rig is a PC I bought in 2008/9? I upgraded the video card a few years ago with an Nvidia card
that had cuda support (at the time I had no idea what exactly that meant lol) for $80.

YOU may not have said such a thing but another PA may have had that impression. Anyway, thank you for 'once again' clarifying the truth.

I agree with the OP that AT LEAST ONE image be in 3Delight. Sometimes stuff just looks different.
It would definitely help those that haven't been able to make the switch just yet.
But since DAZ does not dictate to PAs what renderer should be used, it should be a rule for the DAZ Originals and PC+ items.
