There are a few other render settings, that I discovered (and Daz_Spooky brought up others), that may or may not effect render times.
    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/viewreply/783738/
    (EDIT)
As for the GPU's, well, it will depend on IF my scenes can fit in the card or not. Imagine having the most powerful engine in the world, yet when you need it the most to pull that stump out, the engine can't get there to make the job easy.

That's what 4GB is like for me. I've been there, less then a year ago, and more recently I ran out at 16GB of ram with a scene. It's a kick pushing the tiny demos all over the place with all that horsepower, yet when you really need the boost the most, the Iray code will refuse to let the GPU do anything at all if it won't fit in the ram.

An extra 200watt electric bill, for a tool that I can't use all the time, I'm not entirely sold on the idea.

It would be nice, wouldn't it, if Nvidia could come up with a way to utilized all that memory, even when an image is too big for the card. You know, shift the heavy lifting to the card and send the results back to the CPU. KInd of like when I have my husband open a stubborn jar when I'm fixing dinner. :)

For my purposes, though, a 4G card should be more than ample. And I'll welcome the extra memory when I'm working in Photoshop, too.

wow, all your renders are absolutely STUNNING!
im at begginers level rendering, and ive barely managed to make the default lights work.

may i ask, what is this Iray you people talk about? seems to do wonders compared to my cartoony looking renders.

Iray is the new render engine currently being implemented for Daz Studio 4.8. It doesn't replace 3Delight (the current default) but adds an extra option which has realistic rendering capabilities.

Since it treats surfaces and light like they would behave in the real world, you get some fantastic effects and very believable scenes. Handily, the Daz team also prepared some excellent material presets to start you off, so there's a tool for every occasion.

Well worth downloading the Daz Studio 4.8 Beta for. Give it a test run, it might surprise you!
This post is totally not sponsored by Daz 3D or related companies. I just love Iray that much.

IRay is the new render engine that is available with the DAZ Studio 4.8 Beta version. It can use NVidia graphics cards or your CPU, or a combination of both. You would probably need a fairly recent NVidia card to use the GPU only mode though.

Why do you suppose Daz added AoA shaders with this beta release? AoA shader is normally a product you have to pay for with the intended use to work with 3Delight. I've been doing some testing with this shader in iRay and getting decent results. It seems to work just fine, SSS everything. some channels don't seem to work like the velvet strength so forth but other than that it works as well and is as responsive as the iray uber. Daz_Spooky are you out there? can you comment?

AoA SSS shader base has been free ever since it came out?

    FINALLY got this done! WOO!

A lot of learning. Many early attempts to render were way over-exposed. Then my machine started choking because I was using SubD and render quality too much.

I'm pleased I was able to do decently with the skin and hair (and wig) -- the four arm skin is pretty simple, so while the texture isn't much, I was able to get it looking kind of decent by comparing it to other skins and the optimized skin stuff.

Awesome DZ! You beat me to it! I was only in the thought process of how to do a proper cut. LOL Sheesh... now you have really hot cars and diamonds! You win... you get all the women. ;)

Not necessarily...some women covet shoes above all else, and you made some great ones. There is hope yet!

HAH!!! Thanks barbult. Hmmmm.... maybe shoes with diamonds on them? :)Studded Heels are just calling for diamond studs, don't you think?
Edited to add image. They don't look like diamonds, but they look awesome in Iray.
OH Shiney Barbult! I hadn't played with those in Iray yet! :)

Ahhhh, but my 980s show only about 1/4 to 1/3rd power consumption when not rendering. :) In the cold seasons, they can help reduce your heat bill? LOL

come to think of it you're right but not the toon shaders. Toon shaders haven't always been free and they're included in the 4.8 release as well. when the 4.8 was first published or announced couple weeks back it made a big deal that AoA shaders were included with the toon shaders in the product page for the 4.8. Now it's gone from Daz's main page and statements gone from the 4.8 product page about the AoA shaders. Just wondering. Seems I am actually getting better results using the AoA much less complicated yet equally responsive. I'm noticing very ugly dark edges using iray uber shaders when translucency is turned on doesn't look natural at all. with AoA the dark edges only appear after cranking SSS up and over 75% strength.

Here's another iray test. I've found that firstly installing the maps as usual using a material preset, and then Ctrl-DoubleClicking on the iray shader you want is the easiest way to get started. Also added to this skin setup are Amarijun's blood vessel maps, which were plugged into the skin translucency colour. Although subtle, they add a lot to the look of the skin IMHO.

I've mostly been doing small scenes so far, but I wanted to see if Iray could handle something a bit... bigger. So here it is. I'm using the Dream House alongside the Neighbours Yard and Urban Sprawl 2 for the scenery. The figures are Mei Lin, Monique, Wachiwi using Youth morphs. The 4th is a custom figure using Belle 6's textures and Slosh's child morph (a Christmas freebie provided with the K4 UVs).

Didn't take as long to render as I expected it might. The same scene in Luxrender probably would've taken at least twice as long. No postwork other than resizing the image to a more forum-friendly resolution.

As I mentioned to Kat, I revisited an image, which was one of my first Iray renders, and added the appropriate Iray shaders. For reference, I'm including the image I posted earlier, followed by the second image with the Iray shaders. I repositioned the scene in relation to the sun, but wasn't able to get all the shadow off the cyclorama. The angle of the shadows is a bit different, too.

The differences most evident to me are the overall skin, the hair and the eyes. The fact the second render is sharper may be due to rendering it much larger to begin with and have nothing to do with the shaders.

It looks good either way. Looks like you are definitely picking up on how to adjust things. That is half the battle. :) I am enjoying seeing what people are learning and most of all, how these threads have gotten back to sharing. :) It is nice seeing people work together.

That's a really impressive render Jimbow, and thanks for the link to the texture as well.

Having a blast with the emitters in Iray. Trying out some of my products to see how the do in Iray. All lights in the scene are emitters. Render took about 3 hours. Depth blur and fog was post in Photoshop.

New render! Woo! Glad I got the hair half-decent.

Not as super fabulous as other portraits have been, but hey, it looks like a human. And a cat. I'll take it!
