Cycles X now has AMD GPU Support!

    Nice! Big news for AMD users. Might even consider a AMD GPU next time I decide to buy.

    I  consider going AMD even though it wasn't supported then, but ultimately is was the extra RAM on the 3090 that swung it.

    The 3090 was a bargain (by Nvidia's pricing standards) and I even managed to get it for no more than a 100 more than original RRPs.

    No doubt, I will consider it again in the future.

    Practically speaking Cycles X has AMD RDNA2 Cycles support only. Which at current RDNA2's excessive expense and very limited updates means practically nobody can use Cycles X on their AMD GPU. They say that support for the old Vega (what is that? GCN or something) and RDNA GPUs comes "later", but well we'll see won't we.

    I guess this is very good news though IFF AMD does release a set of AMD Ryzen APUs with RDNA2 GPUs integrated in 2022 as stated by some, I'm not sure if those that stated that would include AMD itself though.

    The flagship RDNA3 card is supposed to come with 32GB. I am really interested in seeing AMD's second stab at ray-tracing. If it's anywhere near NVidia's performance, AMD could actually become my first choice. Who would have imagined that... exciting times.

    Exciting times indeed; if Daz were to look at adding it as a rendering engine, that would open things up a lot, especially if the materials are fully compatible between DAZ Studio and Blender (especially for those looking at animation) and with the target of March for a Cycles native Metal version, wow.

    There was a Z-Cycles project by Jessub Kim @JClave to integrate mdl into cycles. This way the iray shaders would work the same. It's some time that we don't get news though.

    The material conversion in diffeomorphic is good enough for most cases but it's mostly empiric and not granted to always work for complex materials.

    Diffeomorphic / import_daz / issues / #7 - Convert "Shader Brick" materials from Daz — Bitbucket

    @Padone

    I cannot remember where, but JClave explicitly said that he was discontinuing development on the project, and didn't give much detail.

    My biggest, I mean absolutely biggest hope for DS5 is USD support with the various output filters. We would finally stop having to have these types of conversations :)

    Would definately be a huge help for quickly setting up materials for AMD GPUs, intel GPUs, and game engines.

    I love Blender but it takes forever to figure out! Consequently, some people are turned off, I know I was the first couple of times I learned this non standard 3D software. I like that the blender foundation make sure it works without nvidia video cards otherwise it would see alot of people just going with paid software. Yeah, I got my 3090 before the parisites and miners went nuts and covid hit us. I feel for people paying thousands of dollars for stuff that should not be over $800 tops. I would suggest sticking to older hardware unless you have deep pockets but it is your money if you want to spend your hard earned cash it is on you. Oh, and AMD tends to have higher vram than Nvidia.

    Hmm why is Blender a non standard 3d software for you? Imho there is no standard software at all. I mean, look at the zbush interface or at 3d coat... There is software we are familiar with, e.g. modo (sadly no longer), maya or max, but I won't declare them as de facto standard. Learning curves were steep in 2.79, but since 2.80 it is more and more conclusive, at least for me. It is just a question of time to get acquainted with Blender, took me some months as hobbyist with limited time. It is great to have AMD aboard and having their Ati gpu cores supported in cycles x, and at least Apple has joined the blender fund for various reasons, great times!
