So here I sit, still in front of my computer. I did look out the window a time or two though. Never even got the telly turned on today. Still in my pj bottoms. Time to change back into my pj shirt and go to bed. Yard's probably still out there. Maybe I'll look tomorrow. I like lazing around.
Newest Mac Pro is all solid state, doesn't have any drive bays, or a DVD/CD player
Seems kind of short-sighted. Not very "Pro", if you ask me. Of course, nobody ever asks me, so...
Dana
All-Digital is the "Way of the Future" apparently.
Nah, my laptop's a Solid State as well, no CD drive at all. So I have to either get things digital (Not possible for some older pieces of software/games. At least I can get Daggerfall digitally, Steam and GoG helps, but there's plenty of other games I have that are still CD only like Paraworld, Carnivores, Lego Rock Raiders, Zoo Tycoon...)
Ah well, I can try using one of my grandpa's computers later to get them installed maybe. They have CD drives :P
Saving a shady spot on a sunny beach here for when you get tired of the view :)

Won't be sorry to see the end of DVD's, sure was a lot of fuss about not much quality video

BluRay though? :)
I just hope the CDs will stick around a while longer, or at least get replaced by something cooler. Crystals that store data inside them?
Just sayin' that not everyone's got the ability to download supermassive files in under five days time. CDs help with that >_>
Compys off all day yesterday, shady spot on a sunny beach and beer sure felt 21st century after a while
BEER
+1

hmmm opened up the hood of my render rig
hmm hmmm 350w pwrsup - don't know if it's enuff to power one o them terrabyte graphic cards.
one 4gb ram, should be able to add 3 more? don't know why 2 slots are blue and 2 are black?
funny wee daughter board slot, don't know if it's for a funny graphic card?
hmm pci2 16?
uh ohs dust bunnies - hopes iz not carniverous
Mike took a walk one moonlit night
But he received a terrible fright
Mike took off, he couldn't stay
An ELDER THING was headed his way! :ahhh: :ahhh:
The small slot is for PCI express 1x devices like sound cards and other adapters, I think.
I think FixMyPCMike said we both need a 700 watt power supply to use a fancy graphics card (the ones with 256 bit memory). 350 watts is a bit on the low side even when the computer has a slower video card with 128 or 64 bit memory. I'm going to skip the other technical discussions so that I don't confuse you.
I believe that the RAM is installed in pairs like in the early 2000s and 1990s: you could install two 4 GB cards in the blue slots (1 in each slot of course.)
Wish I could answer the question about the RAM but I need to know the make and model number of the motherboard. I think I see it on the paper sticker. I'll try to look that number up. Be back soon.
posted the wrong link. The link goes to the wrong motherboard, doesn't even have the right PCI express slots that are in Misty's photo. I found some similar motherboards though. From what I understand, you can install three 4GB memory cards to have a total of 16 GB of memory. If you don't have enough money, then you can buy one 4GB memory card and put it in the blue slot to have 8 GB of RAM.
thanks :) gonna start with adding one 4 gb in the blue slot and see if it boosts my render speed

You're looking at it from today's perspective, though. When DVD's came out, what did we have? VHS tape? It was a step up in quality.
Still, digital or not, what about software that you have and need to reinstall? I still say it's short-sighted to make a computer without at least an optical drive.
Dana
Yikes! I'd run, too, even with no cartilage in one knee!

Do the solid-state computers have USB slots? Couldn't you add an "outboard" DVD/CD-RW drive?
Misty Whisky, I forgot something that is importaint: In order to use 8 GB of memory, the computer must run 64 bit Windows. 32 bit Windows XP will not see the extra physical memory (the 4 GB you intend to install). You must also install the 64 bit version of Daz Studio because the 32 bit version will only use 1 GB before it crashes or closes without warning under 64 bit Windows.
edited for clarity and fixed Misty's quote
I just realized I have worked four weeks instead of three weeks.

currently running with a 750w PSU. The duo Xeon project build will have a 1,500 PSU. I like having lots of "overhead" room..

Morning. Dramatic thunderheads and lightning passing over, threatening and not delivering rain but cooling stuff down enough for a mob of songbirds to settle in the trees loudly protesting their interrupted breakfast :)

I recall a conference must have been in 1993 or 4 discussing the different mpeg standards 1 to 7. Was clear then that mpeg4 was the best value for video but the big video equipment houses were totally preoccupied with two competing HDTV standards, can't even recall what they were now, and not paying attention at all to the internet (er, you're inter what?..) Discussion of Video DVD standards were all about zoning and making them impossible to copy and anything else but efficient standardisation
My solid state apple has a mess of plugs on it but you can tell that the fibre connection is the only one which makes sense, USB and even Thunderbolt have a real transient feel. Meanwhile high frequency 5G wireless relays with impossible connection speeds are getting road tested right now for the Tokyo Olympics :)
LOL and gee the creature came up real good, congrats :)
wish i'd done that today :)
tomorrow, all day peejay day!!!
