Diffeomorphic - Unable to use some hair

sakwinskicsakwinskic Posts: 0
April 2021 in Blender Discussion

Hello,
I’ve been trying to use the “Side Swept ROse Hair” for G8 into Blender but when I try to make hair, it just crashes (definitely a RAM issue).

I’m not even able to separate the hair from the skull since there is no skull parts in the mesh. There is nothing I can do with it and it keeps crashing, what should I do?

Also, selecting strands by size didn’t help at all:

Use a decimate modifier to cull some of the geometry.

yup, too much geometry.  I think Thomas mentions on his blog the max number of faces, maybe 30,000?  I can't remember exactly.  You can try the decimate modifier to reduce the verts/faces.  You can random select some strands and delete (only if the hair still looks like it's supposed to, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't).  You can select a bunch of strands by length, separate those into a new mesh (in edit mode, hit 'p', separate by 'selection').  Once you have a few separate meshes, you can convert each mesh, then recombine after conversion.  Cinus wrote a hair conversion tool that usually works, even with a gazillion faces like this model.  Just look through this discussion group, it's on here somewhere.

It may sound like a lot of effort, but compared to making that hair from scratch, it's still a lot faster...

Let us know how you made out and if you figured out anything new.

    Thanks for the answers,
I've tried simplifying and decimating the mesh down to 10k but it didn't do much. From what I could get on the Diffeomorphic bitbucket, it seems to be an issue with UVs being both horizontal and vertical... And the addon doesn't have a way to deal with it. Also, even after separating horizontal and vertical UVs into multiple meshes and trying again, the tool requires way too much RAM and just crashes, this have been reported on the bitbucket as well.

It's because the Rose hair gets mixed uv types. The diffeo hair tool requires the uv type to be uniform, typically top-down. That doesn't mean that Thomas may not try to improve the hair tool, if he likes to give it a shot and gets some time to do it.
