using mirror in Blender 2.8 *SOLVED*

Hi can someone help me to use the mirror function in Blender 2.8?  I don't know why it won't work, I am trying to modify the ear of G8F and mirror the changes on the other ear but when I hit CTRL M and select the X option then go to the right ear ( on my right looking at the screen) and manipulate that ear, nothing happens to the ear on the other side. Is there something I need to do to validate the mirror command once I select it to get it to work?

Personally, I'd sculpt the changes with the mirror option enabled for something like using a studio figure that i can't necessarily change geometry-wise; first create a shape key, so if it's wrong can delete it - or dial down how much is used; just select the shape key before making changes to be sure they apply there.

I've never actually mirrored the way you explain; I have either used mirror modifier or scult with mirror on.

I think you want to be using a mirror modifier, rather than the mirror operator. I think you just mirrored the object and because it is already symmetrical, you didn't notice any change.

You'll have to delete half of your model perfectly at the x plane, add a mirror modifier, and check "clipping" and "merge".

You can apply the modifier when you're done.

I was following the steps in a tutorial, but the person was using an older version 2.78 or 2.79?  So when they applied what she called symmetry then used the mirror and set it across x axis, then when she modified the ear using grab and pulling it up into an elf ear, the opposite ear mirrored what she was doing .  Is using that same function in 2.8 a different process?  I have Blender  2.79 as well so maybe I will try in that one and see if it works.  I just feel I am missing a step...  learning Blender is hard!  LoL

The tutorial also says not to apply any modifiers because it will add geometry to G8F and then the morph I am trying to create won't import back to Studio

I found the answer:  On the right side of the screen on the Properties menu  under Active tool and workspace ( the first icon at the top) expand the options menu and there is 2 boxes  labelled X Mirror and topology Mirror.  I checked the X Mirror box and now when I edit my mesh on the right ear the left ear mirrors the action.
