When looking at the product at the bottom I see an outfit listed.  On clicking through, lo and behold the outfit has a bamboo sword.

It is possible that the poses are meant specifically for that sword and somebody forgot to tag it as a required item and not just associated. It also possible that if you try a different sword with these poses it may behave better.

However if you want to use a staff - load the staff in while the figure is in the zero position. This is suggested for all handheld props, so you can adjust the props locaiton more easily.   Move the staff if it doesnt already load into a hand. Parent the staff to the hand if it isn't already.  Now when you move the hand the staff stays glued to it.  For a two handed staff pose however you will still need to move and adjust the other hand.

I'd parent the staff to one hand in a fist pose position. The twist the hand from there

That's too funny - I was playing with the Bamboo poses (AWESOME POSES!) just last night and was struggling a little like you.  I specifically wanted the DA Cyber Sword from G3M to go with the Mercury Ranger outfit and ended up just getting her in pose and then manually twisting and twirling the sword into place - but not before going to the Ren Outfit and using that bamboo sword to get the position to overlay the Cyber Sword over. Worked for me, but must admit that I certainly did NOT do the full variety of poses and tests I might normally do because it was a CHORE. Not trying to be a jerk here, but with that amazing a set of poses, how hard would it have been to include even just a textured primitive as a rod? Something... Anything.  Fortunately I already had what I wanted in my library.
