Interestingly Mixamo character imported to Daz Studio as FBX, shows up properly,
but loose all of the rigging information.
It looks like there is a lot of different versions of FBX, so that is why importing of them is so complicated.
Just wonder, since you have 3DS max and Poser Pro 2012, have you tried using PoserFusion 2012
(you can download it from http://my.smithmicro.com/poser-pro-2012-updates.html) and if that works,
save the scene from Poser as .pz3 and open it in Daz Studio afterwards.
Nope, didn't even know about it. Will check it out.
It looks like, the rigging of animals, does not work well with Poser Pro 2014 Game Dev method.
Another animal - deer.
Poser's FBX import is a complete and utter joke. The import got much better with one of the latest updates to Poser 11 (older Poser versions are left in the rain anways, no matter how much you paid to acquire them), but is still messed up to a degree that I don't consider Smith Micro an adequate business partner anymore, considering how they actually dared to drum up business with their "GameDev" atrocity that lead exactly nowhere.
As of now, Poser 11 Service Pack 6, you'll have kind of a working import. It's very picky about the FBX models it wants to import and more often than not, the model will break apart when you try to convert it to Unimesh to, you know, apply such things like subdivision surfaces.
Poser's tragic magic in action. Upper image is the original FBX import (with textures applied afterwards), the lower one after Unimesh was applied. It's bad. But it is still much better than before the most recent updates.
