Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn. That is awesome!!! What lighting did you use on her?

Honestly I passed over Alawa as soon as I saw her...but this image...wow. I'd buy her just based on this....if the aussie dollar didn't suck so bad right now. LOL. Even with purple banner, no way can I afford pro bundle or even the base character LOL.

But yeah, wishlisting her based on your art!

Quick n' dirty test of Alawa. Love love love her! The bundle itself not so much but the character YES! (Note - I did reduce the boobage by 25% because I'm pretty over the vast majority of Daz characters having gigundoboob...been there still doing that and I see enough gigundoboob in real life kthanxitsnotfun)

For lighting I used my go-to studio HDRI (Energy Flow by Fabiana on Rendo...I always end up coming back to that light set). I also used a low-intensity spot coming from the upper right on her face, and a warm low-intensity rim coming from the left. On top of that is a bit of tone mapping for increased contrast and pop (I pretty much never use the default tone mapping settings).

There is very little post-work...a smidge of a NIK filter at reduced visibility and a teeny bit of high-pass sharpening on her face. That's it, other than the dust particles, which are just overlays of dust from Adobe Stock set to screen mode. I've attached a copy of the original for comparison.

Just a note, for those that have been on the fence with the Alawa 8 sale so far:

ATM Today's Zevo sale includes a 50% off select DO's if you buy a new release from that sale.  This seems to help with the discounts on the $60 worth of select DO's in the Alawa 8 sale...

so you can add a zevo release to the same order as Alawa8?

I was already having difficulty finding products to fulfill that $60 free deal. I think it means I have too many products already, or they keep putting up the same stuff as items to choose for free discounts. But 50% off some of them would be really good.

I had the same problem as well...they keep putting up the same stuff for the free content...it's Daz Originals items...and I've depleted my wishlist of those things down to nil. The next Pro Bundle that comes out I don't think I'd be able to find anything and I'm not going to pick out rando stuff I don't want.

random stuff is exactly where I'm at. Its hard to refse free though, but I spend a long time trying to find something thaqt might work someday. I think I'm out to 203 or so now with maybe I'll use it someday laugh

Fortunately two of the promo pics show the potential of this character.   She is really ill-served by some of the promo renders.  I can't wait to see what some of the buyers do with her.

A lot of times I won't even install that free rando stuff. Like half of the stuff I get from Pro bundles I don't even install...very rarely do I actually like one of the characters that comes in the bundle aside from the actual figure. I don't install that stuff because the more you have installed, the slower Daz moves. So when I get down to the dregs of finding stuff that I actually want, it might be time to skip the bundle and just buy the base figure.

I was already having difficulty finding products to fulfill that $60 free deal. I think it means I have too many products already, or they keep putting up the same stuff as items to choose for free discounts. But 50% off some of them would be really good.

Just verifying that the select DO items in the cart were getting the extra 50% discount after adding a Zevo sale new item.  Of course, that was offset by the buy in cost for the Zevo product, but it essentially doubled the amount of the freebies I was able to put in my cart, for an extra $10-12.  I went with one of the cheaper new item options from today's sale.

In my case, I still have use for the older (pre Genesis 8) characters and addons, and it gave me an excuse to pick up L.I.E. Makeup Sets 1-3 for G3F from Niekdian.  And also more hair - I find use for most hairstyles eventually, plus a few older characters to round out the order.

I did agonize over things a bit trying to find stuff that I felt I oculd use, and abandoned my 'wishlist only' choices to widen my search parameters to 'any Genesis 3 related items', which is how I ended up noticing the 'Bride of Frankenstein' hair and jewelry thingie and the L.I.E. makeup sets.  There are so many items in the store, it's easy to miss a lot of them while speed-browsing though sales.  So yeah, after you've been buying stuff regularly for a while, well yeah what's left over is usually a 'well if it's reallly cheap maybe' stuff not 'must have' stuff, but I'm still managing to find a few gems in the Daz store.

With how often stuff disappears completely from the Daz store though, if something's on your wishlist that you think you might need eventually, well you are essentially tempting fate as to whether it'll still be there later on.  There are a few older G3F outfits that I came across recently via google searches that just link to the docs pages now, as they've been pulled from the store and haven't resurfaced for sale elsewhere, as far as I could tell via Google.  Which is too bad, 'cuz I liked those outfits.

So yeah, I totally get the 'but it isn't stuff I really want' thing, but I DID want the Alawa 8 bundle and a couple of the prereq products for the discounts in that sale, so to me it was worth the effort.  I was seriously considering passing on the Alawa 8 sale before today though...

Them's the breaks with Daz sales!

I've been pretty selective with my bundle buys for a while, but Dasan and now Alawa got me to open my wallet. Dasan is fun, a sort of 80s SF villain look but Alawa is beautiful, Almost all her promo picts look great. I wonder who is the scuptor and skin creators because these are excellent.

And between the Purple Sales banner and various discounts I was able to get the pro-bundle at a very good price. The listed price made me wince a bit but looking at the various dscounts made me reaize this wasn't bad at all.

While I like SF and Fantasy, I usually shy away from the cartoony, or anime, or 'retro" stuff. But this bundle changed my mind - I defintely get a Star Trek, 60s vibe, and a Dean Martin/Matt Helm or Jams Coburn/Derek Flint feel, updated with a big big budget.

I love that she's "older", and an ethnicity that I can't quite place (Pacific I think someone said above). The market is saturated with Europo-American late teen ladies.

Anyway, great job DAZ. A wonderful streak of releases. (but don't keep it up, I can't afford any more :) )

@Joe_Webb Might we please have a render of Alawa, dear sir?

  • davesodaveso Posts: 7,906

well, bit the bullet and bought the pro bundle, 4 addons, one item from the Zevo .. and then ended up with 9 free DO items... oh ..bought a GC too at 10% off, but for some reason it went in at 19% off .. so got all of it for $49 for GC and then added the $7.33 zevo item as an afterthought .. so total. $57+tax.

    Now for some Alawa renders.

Here are two renders of Alawa. I did not buy the HD add ...will get it in the future.
The 1st is straight  out..no makeup or anything.
Neither is postworked or anything, saved as png and converted to jpg.

I like her I think more than most of the characters I've purchased recently ... great texture. i see i should have reduced the size a bit ..

Alawa with Chayton coming soon from DarwinsMishap.  I tired to closer match there skin tone with no luck.  I really need to learn to use materials/shaders settings better.

I'm holding strong and resisting the urge to purchase the bundle, even though more and more items from the DO category are getting discounts now.

I only like her and one hair from the bundle, so I decided I won't buy bundles anymore if I don't like at least 4 or 5 things in them. (unless we get a very good deal like leroy had with a lot of free stuff + 2 pro bundles).

I feel that if I give in and buy I give Daz the wrong message that I like the way they bundled a great and realistic character with cartoonish clothes that I have no use for.

But damn, she looks nice. I will just have to wait for a few months so the base character gets a nice dicount like 80% or more and I can pick her off.

  • Best looking Out-of-the-Box character since Kala 8!  Love the PA Toons.  Easy Buy.  Anticipate much fun bashing the results.

This is a perfectly valid strategy.  There are a few Genesis 8 pro bundles that I've passed on for similar reasons.  In Alawa 8's case, I just happened to like a few items in the bundle, as I do art along these lines occasionally, so the 50% off DO's in the Zevo sale dropping the value of the $60 off DO category' helped push me over the top, but otherwise I was willing to just leave this one on my wishlist for now.  I still feel like I spent a bit more than I usually do in these cases, but that's how it works.

The increased cultural diversity in recent bundles has also been interesting to me as well.  But yeah, for me it comes down to how many items end up in my cart for 'X' amount most of the time, and if I want those items..

Prices have jumped a bit in the last couple of years, for whatever reasons.  The net result is that I'm a lot less willing to pick up a new item at 30%-51% off, even as a prereq item in a sale, unless the associated 'bonus' offer makes it worth my time.  I often look at the cost of the cart divided by the number of items in it, and if the math is showing much over $2 an item, I'll often just dump my cart.  Mainly because I have a lot of stuff already, so I can make do with what I have, but I do still find stuff that interests me often enough I guess.

When odds are good that you'll get a bigger discount later on said bundle if you are just patient for say a few months or even years, say 80%+ off or free, yeah passing on a new pro bundle is a perfectly valid strategy in the long run.  It just comes down to patience, and also if you are interested in the pro bundle in the first place of course.  There are a few pro bundles that continue to not interest me...  So yeah your strategy is perfectly valid!

Plus, if enough people pass on a particularly poor Pro bundle introductory sale offer, well hopefully the Daz sales team gets the message and ups the ante in the next pro bundle sale.

Of course, this can hurt the chances of more 'fringe' characters being offered as 'Pro' characters later if the associated 'non-caucasian' or 'not quite human' pro character gets tied to a particularly bad pro bundle offer, but I'm not going to accept a bad introductory offer just because I like the character, at least when compared to previous introductory sales offers.  I can always grab them later when they eventually get offered at steep discounts, or even for free eventually...

Anyways, I should probably do a render with that retro spacesuit, just to see how it looks from the back.  It annoys me when product promo images don't have decent back views, or even side views, along with the front views, so I honestly have no idea how it looks from the back.  It was one of the things that ultimately convinced me to grab the Alawa 8 pro bundle.  That and the funky hair...

I got the base during one of the Flash Sales that said 65% off with a new release. Didn't care much for items this time.

This is exactly how I feel. I don't want Daz to think I didn't like the character, because she is great and I'm loving the non-caucasian releases as I feel we have more than enough diversity there. On the other side, I feel like pro bundles introductory offers have been less and less inviting since february and this, coupled with my low interest in the rest of the bundle have made me resist.

I gave in and bought Dasan last time. I was in almost the same position but there I liked a few of the items in the bundle. I also feel like the retro space suit in Alawa bundle is exactly the same as the one in Dasan bundle and I don't understand why I would to buy the same item twice when I can easily convert that one and reap the benefits.

Yeah, I picked up Alawa and Winema as I really dig the two characters, but they're really all I know I'll ever use out of the pro bundle. I can totally appreciate what they're trying to do, and the stuff looks cool, but I have nothing in mind in terms of animation that involves space and with the way everything is right now I don't want to just spend frivilously on the offchance that I might use something someday. But I do love the characters themselves and have some plans for them!

Having had some time to sit on the offer, I think the bonuses would have to be impossibly good to sell me on the pro bundle. I’m not interested in retro sci-fi, I think a lot of the outfits are just plain hideous besides, and none of the add-on characters interest me. I have Alawa herself and the Raquel hair sitting in my cart for the last couple days, and I’m hesitating to even pull the trigger on those.

Also, a thought occurred to me a couple days ago: what if the reason Dasan and Alawa are so heavily sci-fi themed is specifically to avoid any accusations of stereotyping? After all, you can’t really get farther from native Americans (or, at least the popular conception of them) than future space people.

I think you might be right although if you look at Nida, her bundle is pretty much stereotypical and with a purpose and I haven't seen anyone complain about i.

I have nothing against scifi. My problem is with this retro scifi unrealistic clothes.

If these were realistic scifi clothes that could fit into a serious environment I would be much more inclined to get the bundle even if I don't have anything scifi planned right now.

I just know that I will not be interested even in the future in this cartoonish scifi stuff.

Personally I love the silly, over the top retro sci-fi stuff. It's actually what a lot of the classic sci-fi shows and movies where about. We have a TON of "serious" sci-fi stuff - it's refreshing, imo, to see something different and unique. :)

Having themed bundles means you can help fill a niche that may otherwise not get as much attention or content. While this one may not be your cup of tea, maybe the next one will be. I love the themed bundles and some I pass on because I just don't render "that type" of art, other themed bundles fly into my cart so fast they break the sound barrier. lol Not every bundle or theme is going to be to everyone's liking though, and that's ok. :)

I think is normal and perfectly fine that a lot of people like retro sci-fi. What i personally don't like is that they make the theme bundle inside a pro-pack diminishing its value to all those that do not like/need all that stuff. They could have easily put variation in the packs so it had some value for more people and then make a theme sale and bundle for the retro sci-fi items.

About having TON of "serious" sci-fi stuff; Fantasy also has a LOT and still gets theme bundles all the time outside characters, in the almost two month i'm here i have seen at least like 3 or 4  bundles or make your own bundle with a lot of options and a couple more fantasy like sales with plenty options.

How many times did (NON Retro) Sci-Fi in the same time got special big new sale (like 6+ items) or bundles and very high discounts? i think none. There are some items coming here and small discount there, but just not the same.

What I don't understand is the combination with Alawa. I understand having this time of theme to cater to everybody. I don't understand why it had to be with such a realistic character. If it was with a character like Rynne I would have understood it and even been happy or any other cartoonish type character, I would have been even happy as I am also not interested in that type of character.

Or they could have had a themed bundle, sepparate to the main pro one, like CJ and Dain had.

Oh well, it's at least savng me money.

I have nothing against scifi. My problem is with this retro scifi unrealistic clothes.

If these were realistic scifi clothes that could fit into a serious environment I would be much more inclined to get the bundle even if I don't have anything scifi planned right now.

Personally I love the silly, over the top retro sci-fi stuff. It's actually what a lot of the classic sci-fi shows and movies where about. We have a TON of "serious" sci-fi stuff - it's refreshing, imo, to see something different and unique. :)

To me, it makes sense. A lot of scifi plots involve people who are pushed to live in the outskirts of the galaxy because invaders destroyed the Earth or whatever colony they lived in. The retro theme implies the light-hearted cheesy spin on it since it usually doesn't take itself seriously and has a touch of optimism in it. Perhaps there was no destruction and Alawa and Dasan just hang out with the aliens, like Zelara and Nix. (Another pair of very realistic characters with unrealistic items bundled with them.)

If the bundles aren't to your taste at all, just grab Alawa, if you like her. I do like retro scifi, but these particular items don't interest me. I doubt I'd grab the bundles any time soon.
