I'm not gonna backtrack: I love the base character and the bundle is loads of fun IMO, BUT I definitely agree it's an odd pairing. Jonathan and Josephene looked like old 60s-70s "Man from U.N.C.L.E" era spy characters so that pairing made sense, but unless I'm ignorant to the connection I don't see how Daz's first indigenous American characters being matched with retrofuturism fits in the same sort of way... but maybe it doesn't have to! It's a fun concept, but definitely it would have been nice to nod to more than just the 60s/70s retrofuturism. It's such a broad and inspiring aesthetic if you're a sci-fi lover! Steampunk, Metropolis, Atomic age, 80s Bladerunner style, on and on...
Also, no purple banner for me yet. I now own 4 DO pro bundles so perhaps the cut off for eligibility is 5 or more. That would make sense as a number I guess.
Me too. Wish I could swap the character for a different one.
Josephene was released during March Madness sale, so there were extra discounts.
No, they're not usually 40%, the normal PC discount on DO is 30%. It's 37% currently because there's an extra discount due to the Honoray PC sale.
I agree with the people who see a mismatch of the character and bundle. I wish they had done a toon-like character like Judy Jetson! Except for the character, the rest of the bundle just screams The Jetsons to me (which I love!) I would like to see an actual Native American bundle some time in the future though too.
And still really hoping for that purple banner! I own all except maybe 4 of the Gen8 bundles. The freebies are all from an old section that's been picked through over and over. I'd really hate to have to miss out on a bundle I really like because the deal is so bad...
She is for certain the match for Dasan! Great character!
I have a lot of the gen 8 bundles as well, always get the banner offers upon a new release and I don't have it either. Here's to hoping it's a glitch of some kind.
Here are a couple of renders of Alawa 8. The first is an "out of the box" render. The second is with some skin settings tweaks with Altern8.
checked your messages?
I have a banner and don't own that many
LOVIN-GEN8 is the code in it applicable only to recepients for 20% off so will work if you qualify
Yeah, checked. Just have the big cat one... Oh but the code does work. Maybe they just haven't sent them all out yet? I could see that leading to lots of CS tickets!
IMO it's actually really cool to have a diversity of characters that Daz doesn't feel the need to tie to culturally themed bundles, especially since a lot of the stuff created for that purpose can be hit or miss in terms of accuracy.
Not a huge fan of these particular outfits, but I do really like the character and I loved the Ziggy Stardust-esque outfit that came with the last bundle. It's not like they have to be used with that model anyways, so I'm never all that concerned about whether the outfit fits the model it comes with, just whether or not it's appealing to me.
It is true that it could be a big miss if they tried to something culturally tied to the characters but at the same time, I think it could at least be something that makes sens to be used in the same context as the character itself. I don't see any relation between Alawa and retro scifi.
This for me means that who would be interested in the bundle, would not necessarily have any use for the character and the other way around.
They can do whatever they do for the caucasian characters if they want.
Not discussing the Jonathan and Josephine bundles which were greatly themed and tied together. Even going further back at Dain8 for example. Sure, the quality of the bundle itself is not that great (especially the clothes) but, the theme is very clear and it works well with the character, in my opinion.
I would've loved to see a Steampunk/dystopian future style too for the theme of the pro bundle.
IMO the theme of your first renders BLOWS AWAY all of the promo renders for this character - grittier, more expressive, and I do like the more "future" futuristic elements better. Even your contemporary render is more enticing as a promo. Nice work!
For myself and a lot of the creators I work with, she's a great choice for a sci-fi lead and so it makes as much sense to have her as the character for this bundle as it would any other. I appreciate when Daz avoids Hollywood casting. It may not result in a good purchasing experience for every person, but as someone who can always use more sci-fi stuff and more unique characters this means I get both in one bundle.
One nitpick is with the bonuses... It's a bit disappointing that the only free DO items seem to be all from 2017 or before. Given that Daz just gave PC+ members a $100 of DO items over the weekend, it feels a little underwhelming and a bit less enticing for that reason as well.
I own ALL of them and I don't have one either.
This may be the first Genesis 8 Pro bundle I pass on. Not too interested in scifi stuff anyway.
Yeh, not much left in that selection that I'm intersted in -- Another reason to pass on this one
I'm still trying to figure out what it is about this image that has me so stunned.
There is a deep temptation to just recreate this promo pic. That's it.
I wonder what the zip on the element blue outfit actually does.
It can't open it, as the collar (which looks like it's attached) is a solid single peice.
I guess it's just something to play zip noise songs with while riding futuristic space elevators (other people also do that, right??).
I like Alawa, especially the Lillian Hair and the Sela morph.
The figures in the bundle can be combined with another figures in the libraries, then, I can't get the point of complaints for some combos. In fact some people become upset when the combos have a perfect and natural match because they think in stereotypes, and they don't see that a cultural grup deserve to be congratulated for those they created.
I was just thinking this myself. As someone of Middle Eastern heritage, I'd probably momentarily feel disappointed if Daz released a character who was obviously of Middle Eastern heritage but "blanked out" any historical and/or contemporary references to my rich culture in their bundle, especially as Kala and Sanjay, etc, have such bundles... BUT, also, I'd obviously be rather offended if they released a middle eastern character who came with an alluring-gaze-beneath-the burqua outfit, a bling-bling-Saudi apartment and/or "gorilla-terrorist-in-the-dessert" style content ("Belly Dancers, bombers and billionaires" stereotype)... so, actually, I think what that says is going for futurism/fantasy is a smart way for Daz to avoid this tricky dichotomy and keep their content as fun, friendly and non-political as possible while still expanding diversity
I'm all for that!
On a different note, I really enjoy that Alawa looks quite ambiguous in age. She seems young in some images, and in others you can see how easy it would be to realistically age her to late 30s-40s with a few tweaks. That's cool IMO!
Also @griffinAvid that image totally transfixes me too
I think it's the Mona Lisa thing: there is so much expression, but it's hard to be sure exactly what is going on "behind her eyes" and that's very compelling.
Oh no, that is rubbish, Charlie! I'm sure it'll wing its way to you soon. I probably don't qualify with 4 Pro Bundles, but you surely do!
The two weekend coupons were applicable to a selection of DO items from 2018 or before. Or was it before 2018?
Frankly, I would say the PC+ tends to pay for itself pretty fast, if you do buy stuff, or you use those coupons. The membership goes on big sales regularly, and with the use of some other discounts or coupons, it can be pretty inexpensive. Anyone missing out on PC+ perks is hurting themselves. I should have become PC+ immediately, I would have saved a lot from my large orders when I started with DAZ and I was only starting to build my collection.
I'm seeing imagery of an angry gorilla leaping out a trifle and ruining a dinner party now.
Great character she is, with a believable morph and succulent skin. She can definitely pass for Malay, Maori, Filipina, or South American. It appears we've returned to non-HD on the face of the HD Add-On (I'd like pores, stippling, or microdermal texturing), but the knuckles, knees, and feet (tops) were well-done. I wanted only one of the outfits (for the boots of Element Blue) and most of the add-on characters, but it was cheaper to buy the Pro Bundle w/ add-ons than just the Core Figure, Element Blue, its textures, HD, and the add-on characters. I almost forgot to input the purple banner code too.
If you bought a gift card yesterday, then the Pro Bundle with 4 add-ons in actual dollars spent is $31.48 or $33.33 for 15% or 10% off gift cards, respectively. So, instead of being merely perks, gift card sales and purple banners are necessities to keep the price within Genesis 3 era ranges.
People complained about cultural stereotyping; so, Daz releases Pro Bundles that ignore the Core Figure's apparent ethnicity (as would be done with a European Core Figure). People complained about the lack of a unified theme in some of the Pro Bundles; so, Daz releases an entirely cohesive set of outfits, hairs, & pose sets centered around a narrow slice of a genre. And now, of course, people complain. I personally have little use for or interest in Retro Sci-Fi anything (but now that it seems we're not going to get personal flying cars, it may be that ALL sci-fi is retro).
Thanks, Daz, for continuing to enrich the Genesis 8 Core cast.
The only thing I see that is even remotely interesting to me is the Retro Sci-Fi space suit. The rest is a hard pass.
I really like this character, she looks great. I'll definitely be picking her up. Anyone know what the blue two-piece outfit is that is in the base character promo image?
Beautiful character.
Bahahahahahaha!!! That's the best typo I've ever made. I'm not even gonna edit my original post because it's excellent. I hate when people pigeon hole us as trifle ruining gorillas -- such a stereotype! I also hate when they pigeon hole us as pigeon holes. That's even worse...
