Didn't see a thread in commercial for this one, so starting this one here in the interim.

Interesting that it can supposedly use your existing modular sets.  A list of which products might be compatable would be nice...

It's probably completely impractical as a '3D computer environment' for your friday night role playing group.  Just picking poses for your characters and trying to move them on the 'Daz Studio grid' might be a major pain, but it's what came to mind immediately upon clicking on the thumbnail on the sales page to check this one out.  Why use miniatures when you can pose your characters in Daz Studio?

cheeky

Definitely brings back memories.  I was more into RoleMaster (aka ChartMaster) than D&D, but yeah...

I didn't start D&D until the first hardback editions were released, so I might be a bit younger than you...  The random dungeon generator from the DMG... yeah I have a few of those maps buried in storage somewhere...  I did buy the 'softcover' booklets you mentioned a while later, I'm sure I still have them in storage somewhere.  Haven't broken out a pen & paper game in a while now though due to gaming groups fading away and such, but I do still dabble in computer RPGs occasionally.  Planescape Torment, while now rather dated, is still awesome, at least with the storybuilding and such!

Did some Star Frontiers as well.  Too bad that game went by the wayside.  There's a few Star Frontiers aliens 3D models over at Vanishing Point, along with a few of the 'classic' D&D monsters.  Those aliens and monsters might look right at home with a Dungeon Builder setup.

    Anyways, back on topic:

When I looked at the Dungeon Builder product, my second thought was 'I should break out a few of my old dungeon maps and see how they might look using Dungeon Builder!'

Edit: just looked over the readme for the product.  Here's a snippet, which might give people an idea r.e. which products will work with this:

    • /data/BWCTotte/DMBData/Built_In_Dungeon_Builder_Set.json

    • /data/BWCTotte/DMBData/MICK_2_by_Faveral_Based_Dungeon_Set.json

    • /data/BWCTotte/DMBData/SciFi_QuarterDeck_by_TangoAlpha.json

Also, the video mentioned on the product page is definitely worth a looksee.  This looks to be fairly easy peasy!

Got the blue box in 1978, the one with wax dice.

That's been one of the biggest annoyances of this quarantine thing. I'm really missing my weekly game.

Basically the floor and ceiling needs to be square, the walls/doors/archs needs to have the same width as the foor & celing, then it will work. There is a script, the Dungeon Set Builder included (used to build the set defintions included, so it's wel tested, and I tried to grab as many sets I could find in the store to test witth.

Some sets have rectangular floors and ceilings, and walls spanning two or more floors, wont work,

I've just bought it but don't have time to explore it fully yet. Can I ask a few questions:

    - does this use instances where possible? That would make the sets generated very memory efficient. (There was a hint at this in the video)

    - can you define multiple parts for each thing (fot example walls) and the generator will randomly choose from these parts? If so, is there a limit to the number of parts (I hope that makes sense!).

    - are there any enhancements planned?

it looks good - I could even see me making my own modular sets to use with it.

    Hi PhilW,
    - It used "Smart Instancing" (my own instancing model I use in several of my scripts), which basically randomize item, materials, maybe poses, and then only places one of each and instances for all others that would look the same. So, the more material variations you use, the less instances, but it makes a good mix and less repetetive look.

    - Yes, add as many you have, add material options, poses, properies for each, the more varity you have, the less instances will be used, see reply 1.

    - Nothing planned, but PAs making modular sets can distribute a Dungeon Builder Set descritption with it. But I do have in the back of my head a script to add random things like debris, but thats propably far in the future, I have another script I need to do, and I need to issue an update or two to scripts I have.

Have you looked at Roll20? Buddy of mine is setting up an online D&D game. I can't vouch for it yet, but it might do the trick.

Thanks for the response - that's all very cool. I will look forward to having a more detailed play.

Sold mine when we moved 18 months ago, I had to cut down my RPG hoard to just what I really play.

D&D Beyond, as well. I haven't used it yet, but it's got a new Combat Helper that is supposed to do more of the rote work for you.

But beyond that, playing D&D remotely is a totally solved problem except for time zone differences and the visceral feeling of rolling metal dice that, like a mechanical keyboard, I just can't do without.

When I saw this, I immediately put it into my cart.

I haven't finished the purchase yet, but that's going to happen very shortly.

My only hope is that it has two things that I have been dying for:

    1. An overhead view, so that the map can be exported as a JPG.

    2. A way to make 1 pixel width "walls" be thicker so that they appear in the over head view. (This has been my only complaint with the MICK sets. When you view from above, the walls are invisible.)

  • TotteTotte Posts: 14,680

    1. The built in set have squares that cen be shown on the floor tiles (what  used on the promo image) and then processed it a little in filter forge to get a nice maplike background.
    2. Tip is to render ISO / 45 degrees, but the built in walls have thickness so the work top down as well.

We're trying a skype version on Saturday, although not using Skype but you get the idea.

    Thanks!

I had taken to using MICK as is to do 45 degree views.

Then I would swap out the ground texture for a plain white, with a black border to get the grid. Followed by capping the walls with a black ballast to have them appear in a top down view.

However, this got to be too much of a headache and I just abandoned it and went back to Photoshop and Campaign Cartographer.

You beat me by almost two years... :)  I had a photostat copy of a photostat copy of the first set of rules in my state, though. :)

This looks like it would be really easy to make custom tiles for, too... What would you think about people selling some?

When's the tech support thread open up?

I was just (about two weeks ago) griping to myself that Daz3D seemed to be made only for set design and not practical buildings, what with no practical way to lay out bits and pieces into an actual building. This is exactly what I was griping didn't exist. Now if it'll just work.

Until I do get it to work, do you mind dumping a list of what sets it'll already work with? I'm curious if the create-a-room set(s) I bought mid-March week, will work with it yet.

I just spotted that someone else answered my question.

So far, I had to drill into the files to find the manual, because Acrobat Reader DC, on launching, said I didn't have permission. And the Dungeon Generator is erroring out when I try to launch it.

Randomized dungeon is wonderful! I tried to find fantasy style building resources but it required too many to setup different scenes for a story. Then I decided to export models from neverwinter nights 2 and made them work in poser. This work was always draining my patience.

I've used it before and since this likely to last a long time I may but it doesn't really replace the feel of sitting around a table laughing with my friends.

Okay. DO NOT USE the new Daz3d integrated installer for this one. It might just be my setup, but I failed to get the second tool to work, after installing it from within Daz, and managed, with no errors so far, after uninstalling it, and reinstalling it with Install Manager.

SP Roach, I also have trouble with the Dungeon Builder, there's something funny going on with the second script i think

  • Does this need the latest DS? I installed manually, got errors when trying to run all of the scripts. Then I tried installing from DS connect. All seems fine , but nope. Errors. Only the PDF script works. I am useing DS 4.10 on Mac. os 10.11.

    Log file says:

It requires 4.11.0.383 as that was the DS version where I got Rob to implement mouse click in an image (which I use for the GUI).

It seems to be designed to work with the Install Manager not the Integrated Smart Install, I just re-installed outside of Daz Studio with the Install Manager and it behaves now

Yes - DazConnect encrypt files that I cannot decrypt myself. It should not really have a Connect installer but nothing I can control..

  • Rogue7Rogue7 Posts: 137

Looks great so far Totte, it seems I need to buy more resources/sets though, nothing I have installed seems to have doors >.>

Thanks - trying to figure out who some have issues like Acrobat get permission denied on the manual pdf or some cant open the third party set links. Working on a debug backend that will log and yell so I can track it down.
