Can't load PNG/JPG etc for either Surface or Environment tab

I'm looking to add jpg and png files on my current scene and I can't select any files. They show up in the browser but haloed out as unselectable. I've never seen this happen before. I'm on a new Mac, didn't have this problem before. If anyone has any ideas of what to do, I'm listening.
