Auto Select object on load

I've just put up with this over the years, probably assuming that it is just the way it is supposed to work but, ideally, I'd like to be able to choose whether an object or figure is automatically selected when it is loaded into a scene.

I often load something and attempt to move it only to realise that I have something else selected that I most certainly didn't want to move. I'm guessing that my assumption was right but just in case - does anyone know of a way to auto-select?
