Creating a Geograft from other figures

Would it be possible to create geograftsby using parts of other Daz figures? As a specific example, could I pull parts from Daz Dragon 3 and its morphs to create a geograft for Genesis 8?

  • Legally? As long as the original content files (or anything substantially similar to them) do not leave your computer, Daz's licencing agreement allows you to do pretty much whatever in the name of creating image or video renders. So, if you're not sharing the geografts you make, it's within the terms of the licence agreement.

On a technical level? It's also possible, although it would require use of an external modelling tool and wouldn't exactly be easy. It's possible that if what you want is something like leathery wings or a tail, there may be an existing product that will be a lot less effort.

  • I hadn't thought about the legal aspect, but I wasn't planning on trying to make anything to sell. I wasn't expecting it to be easy, and I'm not sure whether I'd really attempt it, I just wanted to know if it could be done; the products currently available aren't really up to what I'm looking for, but if they remake the succubus add-on parts again for gen 8 I can make do, wing wise.

Leathery wings? This will be in Fastgrab for 70% off for a day or two: https://www.daz3d.com/leathered-wings-for-all at $8.09 if it's what you're after.

You would not be able to retain any of the rigging or morphs or anything which you pull from the other figure.

  • As RawArt says - you'd need to make a (partial) copy of the thing you wanted to graft, move it to line up with the area you wanted to graft it to, and create new geometry to bridge the gap so the two would weld together - then you'd need to rig that (you couldn't transfer the old rigging as the two would no longer line up). You'd also need to redo morphs, including settings up JCMs, though in some modellers you could load the original morphs as morph maps/blend shapes on the exported model befoe trimming and adjusting and then have thema vailable on the trimmed version for export as shapes for the new figure.

I'm not sure if it would be possible to set up a trimmed version of the grafting figure so that it could be fitted without distorting and just have it hide parts of the base figure, but not try to have it weld - it might be doable if the bones were renamed and you perhaps then added soem dummy bones that matched the area of the base figure to which it would.parent, but the result would be distinctly Heath Robinsonish.

  • Ugh. Alright, thanks guys.

While not exactly what you are contemplating, there is a series about the the creation of the Aguja and the mermaid world and one item specifically about the geografting of the mermaid tail.

My advice is to use geografts as conforming  items or otherwise placing them rather than fitting them.

Yeah, the blend point won’t look quite right but with collision it might look good enough.
