Pet Peeve: Images and Links that don't open to new page

It's rather annoying when you go to a thread and click an image or link. Close the image or link after looking and the thread has closed. You can change this behavior by setting target to New Window_blank when setting up links in the edit window.
While you're at it, if it's an image, be sure to set width to 800 and keep proportional (padlock applied). On over-sized images, the limit is 800. If you don't set it up properly, the image will look elongated.

maybe it needs to be easier than that for the end user
Ehm, maybe I'm misunderstanding something here, but if I click on an image (attached) in a thread here, a new window opens for me. When I close it, the original tab for the thread is still there.
For URL link:
For Image,
10 steps - yea probably not going to happen, I have the way I do it memorised I'm not likely to start trying to remember something else just to keep 1 person happy - sorry but we all have our pet peeves. If you want something consistant and all members to use make it easy and quick.
the forum software should be tailored for the user not the other way around
if we are provided with a link option the default action should be the prefered action by the forum provider
if you cannot persuade DAZ to change the forum software behaiviour you need to modify yours, right click and choose open in new tab
I hear what you're saying - makes returning to the list/index/original page (at the same position you were in) simple by just closing the new tab. Easy enough to solve - I always open links and images in a new tab myself: right click -> open new tab if on a computer, tap and hold -> open in new tab on a phone/pad

Or if you have a scroll wheel button, if you click on a link or image with that, it opens a new tab.
I always use open in new window when adding an image, the forum software doesn't always honour it though :)
I sometimes use "open in new tab" when I'm researching something and I'm working from a list of clickable links. Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, and I have a bunch of tabs working on populating their pages. Then later I can go through each one and close it when I'm done. That helps me ensure I've visited every page that I wanted to.
I do maintain a website, and of course I use "open in new tab" or "open in new window" in my code, so that the reader doesn't lose his or her place.
I didn't know that. Unfortunately, I use a Logitech Marble Mouse which doesn't have a wheel or wheel button.
Ctrl-click opens links in new tabs. Shift-click opens links in new windows.
Also: Ctrl-Shift-T reopens the last tab you just closed (or window if you still have another browser window open), so that you never need to lose your place.
When adding an image with a link to a post, or just a link, there are several options available. One of those options is to open the link in a new window. If you are left-clicking on the image and it always opens in a new window, you've been fortunate to only click on images with this option set.
I generally set this option for both image and text links as a courtesy to other forum members, but I admit, I think links should be set to open in a new window by default in the forum code.
Today, it's Cris who is venting her frustration on this issue, but I've seen plenty of other posts over the years, (if not other threads,) where members bemoan the default link behavior. It's definitely not just one person who considers it a pet peeve. I suspect for every person that takes the time to post their annoyance, there are several more who don't bother. It won't change other people's behavior, and it oft times leaves one open to personal attacks.
Has anyone (e.g. Cris) submitted a help request to suggest a change to the default behavior?
It's also called the middle mouse button, and you can set up one of the extra side buttons on your trackball to be that function in Logitech's softwear... I usually set the thumb button to that 'cause it's easier for me to press than the scroll wheel and it's used in almost every 3D program I use to pan the camera, in UV Layout it's used for way more than just that.
Hi and thanks. I'm left handed. I have not reconfigured left/right click (the big left button and big right button). But being left handed and with the trackball being a two-fingered affair (index and middle fingers), I use my ring finger for left click (which is traditionally the "select" button anyway) and my thumb for right click (which is my context-button, the same as for righties). The two smaller left and right buttons are reserved for "go back one page" and "go forward one page", respectively. The ball itself doesn't have a button function, so at this point I'm fresh out of buttons.
If I am playing a game or using an app that truly requires a wheel or a wheel button (for "zoom", for example), then I have to break out a traditional mouse. Usually I'll grab a mobile mouse because they're smaller and take up less space. But this is stillo inconvenient because neither of my workspaces (laptop or home office) really has room for even a smallish traditional mouse and all the room they require for moving the cursor about.
Unless there's a way I can "fake out" Windows and make it look like my Marblemouse has a wheel, I'm not sure I can use that function.
There might be a way to map it to a keyboard key, certainly if you have a logitech keyboard with extra side buttons, I have a g510 and it has 18 extra buttons on the side I can map to whatever I need.. it's handy.
I prefer to open links in the same window, and if I want it to open in a new window, I have the option to hold the CTRL key while I click the link.
I click almost every link - here and elsewhere on the web - while holding the command key. That opens it in a new tab, at least on the mac. At this point it's muscle memory.
But I'm annoyed that this doesn't work in the DAZ gallery. You have to right-click and then choose "open in new tab" from the menu.
Yeah, it's just my pet peeve and got tips on how to avoid my frustration, so that's cool, thanks, all.
The images though, that's for you guys. I can't see that anyone likes to put up their renders and see them distorted. So hopefully the info will help you avoid that.
I have a Logitech Craft. Wonder Not sure anything is programmable aside from the buttons which assign my different devices.
I broke it all down to every little part. It's not near as complicated when you've tried it. And that part, as stated, is about the images. That part's not a pet peeve for me, but gotta be frustrating for you guys to have an elongated great render.
That said, the only part that I wish was different was not needing to post the attachment in order to get the url for the Image Edit window. Haven't found a way around that.
I usually upload the image to one of my galleries. (I have a number of private galleries to keep things organized,. for images I just want to use in my posts.) Then I just highlight the image on the gallery page, copy, then paste into the post. The images are always 730 pixels wide or less. If it's a private image, all I need to do is make the link open in a new window. If the image is in a public gallery, I change the link to the gallery page, as well as making it open in a new window. (And when I remember, I add "by L'Adair" to the text… about half the time, I think.) I usually only attach an image if the short dimension is less than 400, as the gallery software will refuse it.
Those kind of mice are not made for lefties. That makes me sad.
another peeve, questions about products without a link to the product
+1
I've gotten into the habit of always setting the new page and image size/link. Once you've done it a few times, it doesn't take very long at all and is more "friendly" for the people reading your posts.
I also have a habit of always adding links to the products I mention. Or if I'm replying to a question like "Which artists create good medieval buildings?" and I want to mention Faveral, I'll link to their whole catalog. It takes a couple of extra steps, but I think it's a more friendly way to reply. But maybe that's just me. :)
The one forum software piece I wish was easier was tagging other forum members. It's not too bad for people who's name is all one word, but I haven't figured out how to tag someone like "Chris Palamino" since @Chris Palamino, will only tag someone named "Chris".
FWIW, I've found that if you hover over the thumbnail until it displays the link text then click, it works.
Yes, that works great for clicking to the person's profile. What I was talking about is like if I wanted to say something like:
Thanks, @Doc Acme, that's a really good idea!
It would work if your name was all one word:
Thanks, @DocAcme, that's a really good idea!
And you get the benefit that if your notification settings include when you're mentioned in the forums, you'd get notified about it. But I can't figure out how to do the same thing when there's a space in the username.
Testing to see if this is a solution to your question.
Edit # 23 - WOW! Tried a lot of HTML and other tricks, to no avail. Maybe someone who is Super Forum Savvy can enlighten us.
Yeah, I tried editing the HTML source too.
But apparently the @ tagging is done by the forum software and added afterward instead of being embedded into the text of the message.
Helps if you spell the name right Cris not CHris
