You need to play more video games to increase your tolerance for fantasy armor.

What he said.  Mind you, while this serves as an explanation for this style of armor, it does not excuse it.

I don't think anyone, at any time in history or our future would want to be him or even consider having to dress up in this outfit. How is he gonna pee ot poop for goodness' sake?

Maybe those big chains in front operate like a drawbridge, so when he has to go, he just sticks a crank in a hidden gearbox and winches the whole front panel up.

Or perhaps he just has his unfortunate squire do all the "lifting and holding" for him.

He doesn't need to see over his shoulder, that's what the skulls are for. They swivel round, keep a lookout and shout "Watch out, there's someone behind you!"

Yes, it is unrealistic but not everyone want realism. I think it looks impressive and is a great extreme fantasy style. I wouldn't buy it myself but I do appreciate it.

Not any more ridiculous than the renders of normal, boring everyday people doing every day things

I would only get it for kitbashing as it's not what I would use for my scenes, but it is amazingingly well done work. Gotta admire the PAs skills.

I loved this item and bought it straight away.
I am so happy about this armour.

It’s magical... everything is magical if it looks improbable or impossible.

I’m not into fantasy stuff, but when I see outfits/armor like this and the giant anime swords and guns, I just assume it’s magical and weightless... Otherwise my head would hurt and it would bother me.

I watch anime sometimes and almost everyone can jump eighty feet in the air, pause and have a meaningful conversation with their opponent before whipping out a huge potentially thousand pound sword, gun or other giant object from their magical back pocket... that used to be really distracting and caused me minor headaches... eventually I just stopped caring and now say “Megh... it’s probably magical, a holy relic or it’s made of a super space age alloy”... The jumping I attribute to proper nutrition, high caffeine intake and special sneakers... probably Nike.

But... One thing does concern me about that armor... it's not the bulk, the skulls, the various jagged protuberances, the chains, the big pointy face poker in front of his chin (don’t sneeze hard), or whatever else I haven’t noticed yet... it’s all good for it’s genre and doesn’t bother me...

It’s just that he’s all dolled up to go out and party, but the dude ain’t got no frikin helmet...

Twack!  One arrow in the forehead and it’s good night uncle Larry.

But to avoid that bothering me any further I’m going to assume it’s a magical hoodie he is wearing under that rig...

I got a similar one from Old Navy, but I never really wear it... the label said it was “Arrow and Scimitar-proof” though I’ve never tested it beyond a javelin, and that kinda gave me a headache. It’s terribly rough on the inside and if you wash or dry clean it, apparently that breaks the spell keeping it impenetrable... so it’s also really smelly now. Even magical Febreze has its limits.

You really have to read the care labels on magical clothing.

He probably got his hoodie on sale, because when I got mine, only burgundy-brown and pink were left in Extra-Extra-Extra-Extremely Frikin Large size.

Though I got lucky and found a black Large size someone ditched in the Orc & Goblinwear section. I always check around in other sections of stores and on nearby racks if I don’t find my size or a color I like... people are lazy and never put stuff back where it belongs. I found some great chainmail underwear in Walmart once that way... surprisingly little rust too.

Anyway, that’s what I’m going with so improbable items don’t make me crazy.

    Okay... “Crazier”.

Is this a real complaint?  At least he has full coverage armor!

Most female fantasy armor is far more out of control than male fantasy armor: stiletto heels, armor plates with every vital organ exposed (heart, stomach, kidneys, thigh arteries), chrome bras/bikinis, and armor configurations that would be impossible to articulate in reality; you couldn't move in a solid chrome suit with no jointed parts, armor is best treated conceptually as parented solid objects that don't bend with the figure... unless it's chain maille.

It's a difficult balance with fantasy armor — I appreciate when vendors put in a little extra effort to make armor that looks like it could actually function in combat, that isn't overly gender specific, and has a nice aesthetic. I've definitely noticed GolaMValandar striking this balance much better in recent years, particularly with the dForce High Paladin for Genesis 8 Female(s). Sadly, the more practical fantasy armor is usually much more expensive than some DO-subsidized stiletto version of armor.

There's a ton of great historical reference out there (outside of video games) with so many more armor components that could be addressed for all figures...

One of the things that impressed me the most with this one, were the promos showing the mailed tunic that goes *under* the armor. This set is in layers and all of them are useful.

As to the armor itself; If the pauldrons weren't so exaggerated, it would be a fine set of ceremonial stuff. Has me wondering if there are any, less exaggerated pauldrons in any of my other armor sets that could be kitbashed to work with this one. Or if, just possibly, those pauldrons are also in separate layers and one couled leave the top one off.

I think the armor looks great.  Sure, it's impractical and bulky, but it's fantasy.  If I can accept talking cats, elves, and fire-breathing dragons, I can accept armor that makes the wearer look like an armored truck.  Some female armor barely covers anything vital.  Seems the opposite for the male armor.  I bet it would be fun to take a swim in that armor.  cheeky

Armor is more for the looks than usability. Reminds me of the first X-Men movie that came out, where the leather costumes looked cool but the actors could barely move in them.
  • It's a stylistic trend, to be sure. Very Warcraft-like. Not for everybody's tastes, but the armour is a great example of that style.

Way cool but it needs a helmet! IMO. At least to match the skulls and armor. A morphable character of gigantic size would be suitable for it, with piercing emissive eyes. Top the sword with emissive effects and the skull with glowing eyes. To wish for...for now, still above the budget...

It's absolutely fantastic armor, I think the artist did a great job and I wish I had the money to buy it.

  • If you average the weight with what the female warrior wears which is about the size of a cocktail napkin you'll find it works out.

Yeah, with a helmet you would only need the eye balls:))

Aw, as someone who appreciates quality products, skimpy and impractical armor, and thinks that anyone who spells ridiculous that way rarely has anything worthwhile to say, I am sorry I did not come across this discussion sooner.  I'll save Richard some work though and say no more.

OT but I was having such a horrible day then seeing how this thread turned from a pretty petty post into such a wholesome and supportive thread was just the pick me up I needed.

Seeing everyone come to support an artist and encourage different artistic styles and choices instead of trying to police or belittle an artist for their style was really cool to see.

Its wonderful to see see so many people come to the support of an artist who clearly put a lot of time and care into their work and a lot of study and hours into their craft. The world needs more people like you guys.

Whilst I agree with the OP, it is rediculous if you're looking for realistic armour.

I think the OP is missing the point; it isn't meant to be realistic. Its sole target audience is anyone who wants some pretty amazing looking fantasy armour. I can admire it, yet have zero use for it.

... Oh! With the exception of populating a toy shop with armour minitures. wink

     Whatcha think?

( Thank you Daz for letting me keep my opinion posted)

Considering I saw tons of armour like that when I played World of Warcraft and thought of them as ridiculous as You, I had to learn that some people think "Fantasy" automatically also means "all rules of physics or logic or just even common sense don't apply to anything happening in fantasy" - just see the last season of "Games of Thrones" for proof of that - I now just ignore stuff like that.

There's one thing to remember though: You don't have to buy stuff like that. I don't. Others seem to do, but idgaff about what others do ^^

I was being neither supportive nor petty... (I did go through a Tom Petty phase once, but a cease and desist order fixed that)... I was trying to subtly work in a PSA to inform people of the laundering issues with magical clothing... did you you know that as many as 50,000 people die each year due to mishaps with improperly laundered magical garments?... Neither did I... which is making me wonder if I just made that up... I’m a terribly petty person, so it wouldn’t surprise me if I did...

On a supportive note, which I thought about after I posted my PSA, the outfit is an excellent representation of the World of Warcraft genre of evil overlord armor...

I was going to elaborate on that more, but I realized I’m hungry, nobody reads my posts anyway and I can’t remember anything substantial about WOW other than vague memories of characters long dead... that and I always forget that WOW usually refers to “World of Warcraft”, not “Whip-’em Out Wednesday”...
