Materials not loading?

Hi-why do some materials only show up sometimes, and then I get an error message when trying to load them?

If you are looking at the Smart Content pane they will show only when you have a suitable target selected in the scene. The most common reason for getting an error is applying a preset with nothing in the scene selected (if you are not using a filtered view).
