GTX 970

I've been reading that anything below the GTX 970 is less than desirable for gaming. I was wondering if that was true for rendering in DAZ. Anyone have any experiences with this?

  • Iray will render with the CPU, though obviously much more slowly than with the GPU. I have a 750Ti and it works, though the 4GB of RAM is limiting - still, it's faster than using my i7 920. Still, a modern card with (ideally) 6+GB of memory will be vastly better.

I just watched a comparison between the 4 GB and 8Gb VRAM models of the RX 480. Obviously, this isn't the GTX 970 but one might consider that the results could be similar in other cards. The results were that both cards performed almost exactly the same. Gaming and rendering are very different. Iray requires that every element of the scene fit into the GPU's VRAM or the GPU will not be used at all. Therefore the difference between a 4Gb card and an 8Gb card is huge.

Thanks for clarifying that for me.

  • So to make any real decision about a card for DAZ, the following benchmark site is probably the most valuable? https://www.migenius.com/products/nvidia-iray/iray-2017-1-benchmarks

I have a GTX930.  I can render iray HD character portraits and simple scenes just fine, though not quickly.

I have not yet tried it on a complex scene though.

I have very recently gotten back into 3d after a very long absence so still learning about the fancy new stuff.
