Buying a new desktop, how does this one sound?

So I'm just bad at tech specs. I'm trying to find a new desktop for rendering- I mostly use 3Delight. How does this guy sound? I've found it for fairly cheap:

AMD Ryzen 5 1400 Quad-Core CPU (8 Threads)
G-SKILL Flare X 8GB Kit (2 4GB Sticks)
2 x Sapphire RX 470 4GB Graphics cards
1 x Gigabyte RX 580 8GB Graphics card
EVGA 750W *GOLD* 80+ Modular Power Supply
Gigabyte GA-AB350 Gaming Board w/ Current BIOS
Azza Full-Tower Case
500GB Notebook Hard Drive
Includes Windows 10 Pro digital license attached to motherboard

I'm using a desktop from 2008 at the moment and it's been holding up well, but renders too slowly at times. And I don't go crazy with environments at all. I'm really just looking for something that could help with render speeds in 3delight.

If you want to render with Iray using GPU you will need Nvidia graphics cards, unfortunately Iray doesn't use Radeon cards so you will be using only CPU for rendering, which is slow.

  • 3delight is strictly cpu based so multiple gpu's is pointless. Get a better processor instead of those gpu's.

If you are using only 3Delight then the 3 video cards are overkill, if you are a gamer as well then maybe but probably still overkill.. This is just advice take as you will but dump the 2 RX 470's, go for a better CPU such as the Ryzen 7 2700 or 2700X as you get 8 Cores 16 Threads which 3Delight will love..

Or wait till next year when the new Zen 2 based Ryzen 7 3700 or 3700X which will come packing 12 cores 24 threads, or the brand new Ryzen 9 3800X, 3850X that will come with 16 cores 32 threads of which 3Delight will most certainly love..

I would at least swap out the radeon cards for a decent nVidia card since others have mentions, it's overkill for gaming and does nothing for DS.

At least with an nVidia card yould have the option of iRay later if you wanted. (Beyond CPU rendering)

    1) Memory:

You need more ram in that build.  You also want atleast 16 gig ram, ideally 32+.

8 gig of ram is woefully inadiquate.

    2) Hard Drive:

I also noted you have a notebook hard drive, thats for laptops.  If your putting a tower together you need a desktop hard drive.  500gb is woefully inadiquite, get atleast 2TB.

    3) Graphics Card:

I agree with the others here, 1 Graphics card is fine for gaming.  I would dump the 2x470's for a better cpu if you are sticking with 3d light.

If you want to do any Iray, upgrade that Rx580 to an NVIDIA card, 1070 series or 1070 Ti would be a good alternative as both have 8gb of video ram which would be needed for IRAY.   A 1070 would outperform the RX580 in gaming, the 1070 Ti even more so.

  • Thanks for the information guys. I'll definitely prioritize CPU rendering instead (though I'm totally back to square one!) After some researching, I figured it'd be best to get some for of Nividia graphics card desktop and make the switch to Iray. I'm a pure hobbiest and outside of speed and a dabble of good quality, I'm not looking for much.

How would you all say this fares?

    That's a 3GB 1060 graphics card... AVOID!

(There's a 6GB version which is OK, you'll find them trying to hide the info in the small print!)

Just be aware that because of the new RTX cards, the Nvidia 10 series cards are on there way out and that the 1080TI's are supposedly already gone..

Ah, thanks for the catch! I think I finally found one that would be able to handle Iray renders. Bonus points that there's a $300 less open box one I can look into:

  • All in all, I'm just looking for something that could help me work toward one day achieving this level of detail in this bust, Think the PC in my last post would be capable of helping power wise?

  • Easily, I have done more putting a 1070 ti in a 2010 Asus destop with 6 gig ddr3 and a core 2 duo cpu.

...indeed if you are primarily looking at 3DL the more CPU cores/threads the better.  You can get a low power 2 GB GPU to drive your display(s) which will improve refresh rate.

16 GB is adequate for 3DL rendering. My work system had 12 (now upgraded to 24) and never had an issue with rendering 3DL.  If you are on a budget make sure to get an MB with 4 DIMM slots which will allow for upgrading to 32 GB.

Two items in the Daz store you may want ot consider are IBL Master (this works for both Iray and 3DL) and Wowie's AweShadeing kit  for 3DL. IBL master produce ful GI without the long render times of UE.  The AweShading Kit expands on and opens more features of the 3DL engine than the version packages with Daz.  Wowie has updated the AweShading Kit since it's introduction so it has even more features.

    https://www.daz3d.com/aweshading-kit-10-for-daz-studio

Now if you are considering moving to then Iray yes, you will need a more capable Nvidia  (at least 6 GB preferably 8)

I would also consider a dual drive system, a small  SSD for your boot drive (240 - 256 GB) and larger HDD for your Library/Runtime drive (2 TB).  I wouldn't bother with Optane, more expensive compared to a larger capacity HDD.
