Simplest Way to Light Overcast Exterior?

DekeDeke Posts: 1,614

I'm using Daz Studio with Iray. I'm pretty handy with interiors, but how would I like an exterior on a cloudy day? I've read about creating a large plane and making it an emmiter, but also about HDRI spheres. Any ideas? I assume the cloudy aspect would make light bounce around a lot and thus make for long renders?

If you use a HDRI environment through render settings, you'll get the proper lighting for overcast. It won't have an effect on lights you add since the clouds are an image rather than physical objects, so they won't bounce light around. However, if it is a dimmer light, the render could take longer as it will take more time to light the shadows.

HDRI Haven has a whole section of overcast sky HDRIs https://hdrihaven.com/hdris/category/?c=overcast

Thanks. I haven't used HDRI much and loaded in some gloomy clouds and it is a bit different dealing with an object not in the paremeters panel but in the render settings panel. But it's giving me the soft light I'm after.
