Thanks for providing Rob's perspective on the situation. I have immense respect for both of you!
I seldom use every asset in any product. For example, if I render only in Iray, I will never use the RSL materials presets. The fact that those unused assets will always be marked as "new" doesn't mean to me that the product is new to me. So, product status based on all containted asset status, would not be what I would want anyway. So I am fine with that not happening. My preference would be that once I open and use anything in a product, that product is not new anymore. I guess I will either have to turn off the automatic assignment of "new" group or get in the habit of turning it off on each new product once I have used it.
I have a saved filter (group:new) in the Products tab, so when testing new stuff I turn that on and go through product by product, clearing each as I'm done. But obviously that won't work for everyone - if you "test" by using each new item in a scene you will want access to the ungrouped stuff too, without constantly adding and removing a filter, for example.
I have a saved filter for a group that I created for my favorite, often used products. (You need two colons in the filter, I believe). I've never thought about filtering on new. That could be useful, once I get new cleared off of all the products I consider not-new.
I didn't understand what you meant by "if you "test" by using each new item in a scene you will want access to the ungrouped stuff too, without constantly adding and removing a filter, for example."
Do you have time to explain a little bit more?
I was just thinking that filtering the new items, grabbing oen to test, removing the filter, grabbing other stuff, then when done reapplying the filter to find the item you were trying out to un-New it was a bit of a fiddle.
