...OK so have Tampermonkey installed and running, the scripts installed, but still not seeing the browser spell check working (not just here but also now on Gmail).
When I click on the icon it indicates spell checking is on but I am not seeing it.
And Tampermonkey shows it enabled as well?
I don't know. Sometimes things may 'break' and the browser needs restarting.

You've been lucky. This is my business.
...did that and still nothing on any page where I need to enter text. This is a nightmare for a dyslexic like me.
...don't have any trouble with that.
For what it's worth, while it almost certainly has nothing to do with your current problem, you may have security issues with some sites with that version of Firefox. You're seven versions (very roughly about 6 months to a year) behind the current release branch of Firefox. There are a fair number of browser specific security updates, and FF 56 doesn't have whatever Mozilla did to Firefox did to cope with the revocation of Symantec's security certificates (https://blog.mozilla.org/security/2018/03/12/distrust-symantec-tls-certificates/ -- I did not realize myself that Symantec owned Verisign.) That said, shifting to Chrome will take care of that specific set of issues.
Chrome will come with an entirely different set of privacy issues, since it's part of the Googleplex and they've long since recanted on their old "Don't be evil" motto, but you're also not going to be allowed to defer security and other updates.
...as long as it doesn't break extensions I'd be OK. FF updates did that a lot. It is faster than FF asn like I mentioned a lot "leaner" in memory.
Moy ongoing complaint, still can't seem to get Browser spell check to work anywhere, be it here, Gmail, FB, Disqus, other forums etc. Not sure where to fix that. Really annoying as like I mention i suffer from dyslexia and have to often send things to Word to check for errors which is an extra step I shouldn't have to deal with. At least in FF it worked without a hitch.
I started having that problem tonight with Gmail in FireFox. I did Ctrl-F5 and now it works again.
...ah, received similar advice form the Gmail thread, however I am finding Chrome to be faster at loading pages.and doesn't take up nearly 2 GB of system memory.
Still need to figure out why the built in spell checker doesn't work anywhere. It worked fine for a the first day but since then has been MIA. Not sure what broke it.
I wonder if your FF just needs a good cleaning out? FF on my PC is pretty darn fast most of the time. Chrome is, too. Even on my junker laptop the two browsers are decent, but on my desktop they load near instantly sometimes. Though I recently replaced my laptop hard drive with an SSD, and in a laptop SSD's a like magic. MAGIC. O.O But otherwise my laptop only has an i3, and a crappy one at that since it is mobile.
...yeah I have an older i7 and no SSD (can't afford one even at the ridiculous sale prices I am seeing) Also, older case (pre SSD era) so not sure how to mount it as I have no adapters.
I always cear the cache in FF out and there really isn't much else. As I indicated fruther back up I don't have a lot of add ons and plugins so that shouldn't be what is causing to to run so sluggishly. The only idea I cna think of is that it is an older version I am using (56.0.2) as I am so leery of losing my saved passwords, form fill data, and having useful extensions/plugins broken again. like has occurred in the past. Not sure what else than the cache would need clearing (I use CCleaner regularly and FF performance doesn't improve at all afterwards).
I imported my entire Favoruites list, all saved passwords, as well as "form fill" data to Crhome, and when I start it up in the morning Gmail is ready to go within moments whereas on FF it took several minutes to fully open (often triggering a "not responding" message while it loaded).
