...is anyone else experiencing an failure error when trying to access Gmail?
Last night when I opened FF (Gmail is my "home" tab) I received the error message in the attachemnt below. I have no issue accessing any other Google application, just Gmail. I left a comment on the Gmail forums as well as both their FB page and a site called DownDetector.com which seems to indicate outages in numerous locations.

Have you tried other browsers? I have no issues in either Firefox or Chrome.
No problems with Gmail here!
..already using FF (Ver 56.0.2) no issues until last night. Don't have any other browsers save for the version of IE that came with W7 which I will not touch as it is a security sieve.
Sven, you are in Norway, correct?
Nope, Finland!
...OK Finland shows no major indication of outages on the map I am viewing.
In Europe, Seems to be bad primarily in the UK (London to Midlands) the Netherlands, and particularly Moscow,
Here in the US it's the Northeast (NYC to Washington DC), Chicago, Southern California, The Bay Area and here in the Northwest (Portland, Seattle, Boise).
I hav had no problems with gmail.
...I did some more digging around on their help and forum sites and really cannot seem to get a reasonable answer as to what this exactly means. Does it mean my account is hosed and unrecoverable? Does it mean I need to create a new one (and how do I use my current user name [which is my legal name as I also use the account for business purposes] without getting an error that the user name is already in use?).
They seem to offer no help at all, just a lot of vague responses.
Did you actually contact their helpdesk? I'm sure they are required to fix your account if you cannot access your emails?
I have not checked on my computer yet today, but it works on my iPad.
Do not assume this is an unrecoverable error.
First clear your cache. It has been ages since I used FF so do a Google search on how to do so.
Next make sure you're malware and virus free. Do a full scan including a boot scan if your AV allows it.
If you do all that and still cannot access Gmail, check to see if you can log into your other google accounts, Youtube, Hangouts, whatever you use. They all share one login. If you can still log in to the rest then it is definitely time to contact Google CS and see if they can help.
The problem is Firefox. Clear your cache. I found a post on the FF forums about the issue and clearing cache fixed it.

..there really is no "online" help. I get directed to either the forums, their normal "help" page (where I've already been) or something they call "Allo" (which is automated not a live person).
What I find really frustrating is that they have some sort of limit on how often you can post on their forums so it's difficult to maintain an ongoing discussion there at all.
...well it opens in Chrome but that is of little use as I have no access to saved passwords for all the sites I use. I am already involved in the monumental job of rebuilding mu custom runtime structure and re-insltaling all my content and plugins for Daz, Carara, Bryce and Poser Pro. Not about to try and learn and customise a new browser and do the same, having to manually enter passwords for everything again. Also all of my info for forms would have to be hand entered again as I don't have the "autofill" function that I use with FF.
I've head a number of negative things about Chrome which is why I don't use it.
Just clear your FF cache!
Chrome has auto fill functions just like FF does. They are in the settings. By default it should ask you the first time you enter a password if you wish to save it. Chrome also has a master password feature, auto fill for forms (that are not passwords) and lots of other things. I tend to go back and forth bewteen FF and Chrome a lot, both work fine and have many of the same addons and plugins.
Did you try clearing cache in FF? If gmail works in chrome that indicates FF is indeed the problem. It has to be something like cache.
2nd, try entering gmail this way, with no funny junk at the end of the address:
mail.google.com
3rd, try disabling some browser add ons if you have any. One may be causing issues. "Google Search Fixer" may have issues, there is an update to fix it.
Gmail working fine here ( UK ) on Opera, Chrome, Waterfox and Firefox ( all up to date versions )
BTW, hitting CTRL + F5 will 'hard reload' any tab selected *wink*
...yes I cleared the FF cache and still no go.
Just using "mail.google.com" didn't work got the same error.
Wouldn't know of any add ons that suddenly would have triggered this. I only have the following:
Norton Safe Web
Mining blocker,
Ad Blocker+
Tampermonkey (which allows FF spell checker to be used in these forums)
YouTube High Definition
Google Translate
Clear Cache Button
Received a reply to one of my posts and discovered there is a utility to import passwords, form fills, and favourites list. Closed FF, did so and everything transferred over (did a couple tests and they worked).
Currently entering this using chrome and already see a few downsides:
1: Cannot use a universal browser spell check (so I have to copy to Word and then paste back after making corrections as SCAT's utilities have been limited)
2. using the alt+P and alt +C keys perform other functions than copy/paste as apparently there is no edit menu (or for that fact any task menus in the upper bar).
3. In order to use the features imported from FF I am required to log in every time I open Chrome (which means having to remember that bloody password each time as the field doesn't auto populate).
4. Some add ons and plugins here (termed "apps") often have a purchase price in the Google Store. For example I installed an adblocker but it is only a limited trial version (7 days) and I actually have to pay if I want to keep it. With FF paying was a "freewill donation". but you could keep using the utility even if you didn't contribute.
I'm also not comfortable with making purchases though Chrome as it doesn't appear it handles security as well as FF does since it doesn't sync with Norton. I'll play with it for a while but keep FF for transaction purposes.
Only use Chrome for Gmail. No reason to use it for all your other stuff.
If you are talking about spell check in the Daz forums, there may be something you need to do in the Daz browser add on settings. I believe there is a prefered browser option that must be set to the correct browser for some features to work. You might need to check with ATI. Otherwise chrome should spell check automatically by default on most other sites.
CTRL+V to paste, CTRL+C to copy
There should be an auto log in option in the settings.
Looks like I am using ublock for now, it is free. There are still plenty of free and donate apps out there. Hover Zoom+ is a fun app that will show the larger images of links and thumbnails simply by hovering your mouse over them. It doesn't work on every site, but when it does work I don't have to click to see what a link or thumbnail is. It makes for very lazy browsing, LOL.
If all else fails, you can back up your FF stuff and reinstall it. That should clear up whatever is causing your gmail issue. And you can always use different browsers for different things.
Norton! Norton is notorious for suddenly deciding to disable mail. Turn off Norton and see if gmail comes back.
...not running two browsers at the same time, and not going to switch back and forth between them either. I'm a fan of the "KISS" principle.
Already have Autologon active.
One thing I do notice in looking at the processes tab in Task Manager is that Chrome seems to run a lot leaner as it takes up about half the system memory that FF does.
Yeah I'll have to look into the available extensions & such
Still wish they used the conventional Alt+ keys.
..OK for the "Chrome challenged"
In the advanced settings there is one called "Payment Handlers" Do I need to add sites (such as Daz and Utility companies) to a whitelist or, if the "allow' sites is selected do I need to worry about that?
What is "Sync"? There is a button for turning it on.
Also, where do I find the "Daz Browser Settings"?
Oh wait, I was wrong. The forum spell check is just a tamper monkey script. Its been so long I forgot. Just go to ATI's script page and install it, along with whatever else you want.

The Daz Deals Browser Add On is a totally separate thing and once installed there will be an icon in the browser tool bar to change settings.
..OK got it, Nice it was compiled for more than one browser.
...well so far so good tonight. I'll see how this works out over the next couple weeks or so
FIXED!
Hold down the Shift key and click the Reload
button in the navigation toolbar.

I was having this same issue out of the blue and the above fixed it without having to keep clearing my cache, cookies, etc. Hope this helps you too! :)
Used Norton for 20 years. Still do. Never had a problem with Norton interfering with email. For a few years (10 to 14 years ago now) it was slow and over complicated making it hard to upgrade or completely uninstall but after it's redesign in 2008 it's always treated me right and kept me safe. (And it's not expensive if you watch the sales at NewEgg.com. I keep 5 machines protected with NortonSecurity for $6 each. I give boxes away for Christmas and birthday presents. I sell boxes to customers for my cost. None of my customers or relatives ever complained about Norton affecting email or its protection level.)
Good for you. You've been lucky.
...
...haven't experience any issues here either.
