Hmmmm...then the news I saw recently lied?  They just made the minimum pay rate for everyone $15/hr.  Even for part time workers.

    Dana

think it goes by state.  did back in the day. 70s.  whole new world today.

No, the minimum wage is a Federal mandate, not a state one.  What is considered a living wage may differ by state, or by communityFor general cost of living.  For example, in New England, a modest three bedroom house may cost between $250,000 and $375,000.  Down south, in the Carolinas, Texas, etc., it may cost $175,000.  But wages are lower, in general, in those areas, as are other cost of living categories.  In an area like where KK lives, rents may be almost as much as a mortgage for a two or three bedroom apartment.  The same goes for my area.  I checked a few years ago and was shocked to see that rents in a good area of town were as much or more than what I pay for mortgage, and my mortgage includes escrow for real estate tax and homeowners' insurance!  Truthfully, I don't know how people can manage that.  Those who can easily sure would be better off buying a house...at least it's yours, and you don't have to be bothered with annoying upstairs, downstairs or across the hall neighbors, smokers polluting your air, complaining about the volume of your music or home theater, etc.

    Dana

This is absolutely correct -  I have lived here in Austin, Texas all of my adult life.  A one bedroom apartment that used to range around $600-$750 is now around $1100 - $1200 that is if you want to live in a safe area.  I have a relative that purchased a home here - I am uncertain of the value actually paid but last I saw it was worth around $250K and they were paying around $7K a year for property taxes - which averages to around $583 per month tacked onto your mortgage. and yes- there are multiple incomes in this household.  I feel like folks almost cannot live here - at least alone.  More people than not have to bunk with a room mate to afford the rent/mortage.  So I am with you, don't know how folks manage.  I have to myself

My current gripe is inconsiderate people blocking walkways with shared bikes and scooters.  People leave them everywhere in my town.  They carelessly block handicap access ramps, doors to buildings, subway entrances and exits.  There is no reason for this.  Aaaargh.  I am in favor of these shared bikes and scooters in general.  Was a frequent user after my own bicycle was stolen.  But it is getting absurd.  Ruining it for everyone.

EDIT: How hard is it to leave it a few yards further away?  angry

..same issue here in Portland and we have three scooter services now.  We do have a Bike Share service as well but it is all docked.

The other issue I have with these scooters is here people often ride them full tilt down the sidewalk (they can reach almost 20 mph).  Though they are not supposed to many do so anyway.  Like bicycles, you can't hear someone on one if these scooters coming from behind and as I've seen over the past month, a number of people who ride them tend to be a bit more "unsteady" than cyclists.

They're expensive too. Here it's 1$ to start and 15¢ a minute (one hour use costs 10$).  The Nike orange bikes are 8¢ a minute and a yearly membership is only 99$ with the first 90 min/day riding free (basically 9.8 hours of continuous scooter use after the start up fee).

So you can just leave the bike anywhere? How do they not get stolen? It seems like the company would just charge the bike to the last person who checked it out if it goes missing. I'm from a small city; we don't have stuff like that. Just wondering.

Too many people are very inconsiderate these days.  They think of themselves more than anything else.  Proof of this...the Selfie!

...only if you are stupid enough to not to lock them up (they have a hefty built in U-bar locking mechanism) and don't mind being billed for 1,600$ for replacement  (you have to register with the plan like a car share which includes providing your CC#).  The bikes are also fairly hefty (weighing in at 57#) and use a closed shaft drive instead of conventional chain drive with an 8 gear transmission in the rear hub.  They also have GPS tracking. To unlock, you have to enter both your account number and PIN, hence the last person will not be charged for your riding.  The service itself has dedicated docking stations in numerous locations throughout the city (there are at least a half dozen within a very short walk from where I live). You can also lock them to other public bike racks as well (once the lock is engaged it stops the "meter").

They are also not sleek 10 or 12 speed racing bikes or 24 speed mountain bikes either and are quite distinctive looking.

Smart content is acting up so no rendering for me tonight, which is a bummer for me.  I felt like I could not heat up water for tea even though kitchen is supposed to close at nine not earlier so I put my tea bag in lemonade and hope it helps me sleep.

Well, one neat feature seems to be that they have drive shafts instead of chains... But I guess that sort of arrangement prevents a bike from having shiftable gears... Well, without some sort of transmission.

Still, that looks better and is a more convenient customer usage arrangement than NYC's Citi Bike service...

I think the only idea it got right is the docking stations... You have to return it to the dock or you get a hefty fine.

That's like shopping carts... People put their groceries in the car and then dump it anywhere within a few steps of their laziness... In back of the car next to them, in the middle of road, blocking the parking space next to them or my favorite is they just let it roll away into another car...

I watched someone push a cart in back of the car next to them as it was trying to back out... Which was pretty obvious as the person looked over at the other driver as they were closing their trunk...

I think the one that annoys me the most is when they push the trolleys into handicapped spaces... I wanna heave the damn thing at their car.

A while ago some idiot pushed a big Home Depot flatbed cart in back of my van as I was getting in... I guess he was done loading his bag of potting soil, so screw the person next to him... So I got out and flipped the cart over in back of his car and drove off... I didn't look back, but he didn't look like he was built for standing that thing back on its wheels without assistance and getting out of the space would of required a lot of maneuvering.devil

That wasn't a proper complaint... A complaint is a statement indicating a situation is unsatisfactory or unacceptable... That was merely a video of a group of individuals attempting to satirize bureaucracy and misunderstandings...

A proper complaint would be something like "these ferrets I've stuffed in my pants are very bitey and the man at the pet store assured me they wouldn't be".

    Nope... Not a complaint.

Non-complaint:  Wheee... I just discovered that my AmazonPrimeVideo via my fireTVstick also gives me free access to the previous season of "Doctor Who" that I'd missed, and apparently some of the new episodes with the new woman Doctor.  Yea!  And all still while using my free 30-day free trial of AmazonPrimeVideo.  Free trials sometimes rock! yes

Complaint:  Now that I'm old(ish) my toenails tend to grow faster and more wonkily.  In particular my left little toenail.  It seems that after a surprisingly short time it breaks to form a sharp point on the side next to my 4th toe and scrapes it most irritatingly.  I have to bring out the hardware to clip and file it down much more often than I would want because it's so difficult to reach that toe anymore. frown (There's too much of me between me and it.)  Why is it that as men get older our hair and nails grow  faster and in particular why does hair abandon the head and migrate to the eyebrows, nose and ears?  no  My eyebrows used to be well behaved and would maintain a proper density, length and grooming automaticly.  Now if I ignore them for a while I end up looking like Henry Kissinger. frown

They appear at age of "maturity" where one is supposed to have gleaned a bit of wisdom.surprise  However, my observations are that the late teens are NOT a profound period of wisdom. frown
