Canes, walkers, or even mobility vehicles aren't always a solution.  They help but also create new ways to have accidents.  While my step-mother was up here in the north attending a wedding, my father remained in Florida going about his normal routine.  One day he came out of his favorite breakfast restaurant where he knew it and its walkways well, in his mobility vehicle and the wheel slipped off the edge of the sidewalk pavement into the grass.  Over he went.  Then to the hospital he went. sad When in fragile condition, even little things can sneak up on you. frown

NoteAlmost let a Freudian slip get by.  I first spelled "wedding" as "weeding". surprise

...cold and breezy here. low - mid 40s and a stiff breeze augmented by all the tall buildings in the area that act to funnel the wind down streets.  Lows have been below freezing. but fortunately no precipitation.

My birds hate living here. It rained today and all week it's been bitter cold. Who teleported Southern California to Canada? I bet my bottom dollar, on December 25th, when I want to wear a scarf and a coat, I'll be wearing a tank and shorts. Frosty the Snowman  will never move here? Why? Because Frosty the Snowman doesn't do suicide missions and neither does Santa Claus..

...well got the certification done for the Medicare assistance. That was one of two good parts of a day which wasn't all that good.

First off, I don't do well with crowds so I try to avoid such situations as much as possible. Going through downtown (which with holiday shopping is a mess plus buses heading out in the afternoon tend to be fairly crowded) was not an option so I left home a bit earlier and took sort of a long way around going east on one of the LRT tram lines to connect to a bus inbound  into the city to get to where i needed to go.  I'm retired I have time on my hands, so it isn't a big deal to take the extra time to avoid the hassle oc being elbowed having my feet stepped on or crammed in a small seat with another person.

So unexpectedly, one stop before where I was supposed to get off to connect to the bus we were told to get off the train as it was turning  around to head back into town. This meant the nice 5 min connection I had planned was no more and now i would be running late.  So after getting off we all had to board a bus, not an emergency shuttle that would make no stops to the next tram station, but a regular route (ironically the same one I was supposed to connect to at hteh stop further ahead) that would be picking other people up along the way.  Suffice to say it became the "sardine can city" nightmare hoped to avoid. Once we got to the next station and everyone else got off, there were maybe 5 - 6 people (as well as myself) left on the bus. OK finally felt as if I could breathe again.  Made it to the appointment everything there went fine and went ot wait for another  bus to the nearby Hawthorne distinct (where i used to hang out) to get lunch, meet with some friends I hadn't seen in a a while as well as do some shopping afterwards.

The next "folly" was somewhat on me (well my short term memory lapse issue) as when I got off the bus I realised I forgot my shoulder bag at the office which had my phone charger in it.  Having just missed a bus heading back the other way, I ended up walking into the teeth of a persistent icy cold wind all the way back.  Retrieved the bag and went back to the bus finally making it to my second stop, though feeling half frozen by now from that walk.

Ended up having a great time, a couple pints of beer, smoked a cigar talked about all sorts of groovy things & such which helped smooth out the earlier tribulations of the day.  After we all went our separate ways I headed to the supermarket there (where I used to shop regularly when I lived in the area) to gett a few things for make a nice dinner when once again things began to go wrong again.

Now this market was a local Northwest chain, almost an icon, where I have shopped at for decades, that always prided itself on neighbourly service. (much nice than the indifferent attitude I'd get from  Safeway).  A number of years ago they were bought by a big company out of Indiana which vowed to keep the local chain's Northwest identity and neighboruly nature.  Apparently in the last couple months, something changed. The store was totally rearranged, they got rid of their natural/organic food department, and like Safeway, mixed everything in with the rest of the big name commercial stuff (hence I had a lot of trouble finding what I needed), took out the express lanes so if you have only a few items you either needed to use those self checkouts (that never work right for me), or stand in line behind people with shopping trolleys piled high.  OK so I decided head to the front checkout area as I only had a small carry basket with less than 10 items.....only to find it closed (again the only choice being those accursed self check stations). So I ended up having to go back across to the rear of the store to use the manned checkout lanes there.

So finally, got everything purchased, bagged, and made my way to the front exit to get my bus to head home.  Now I'm limping pretty noticeably thanks to the cold and having been on my feet too much, only to find they had locked the front entrance which leads to the main street (which I entered through not long beforehand) even though store was open for another two hours.  The uniformed security guard (never seen one there before) told me that was the new policy and I had to exit the rear doors on the opposite side of the store.  I told them I needed to catch the bus (the stop was right outside the front door) but he refused to let me through, so I again I hadto go to the back ofthe store (for the second time), then once outside had to walk an extra block back to the main street (along a, extremely narrow sidewalk with 30 mph traffic shooting by literally only inches away) all the time worried I'd see my bus go through.  Fortunately made it with a few minutes to spare as the next one wasn't scheduled to show up for almost another half hour.

Tomorrow the company is going to get a very terse email from me.

    I need a cat.

I want a mouse holder like that,  but I think maybe one or the other of my cats would steal it.  They are not honest cats, they steal all sorts of things, especially things off my desk.   They have  pens, pencils, rubberbands, a couple or 3 book marks, including one of the latest ones I tried which are magnetic, emery boards, cable ties, loose coins......you name it they steal it as a toy.

I'd check the local pawnbrokers... Cats tend to steal things to pay off gambling debts.  Many cats these days are addicted to gambling without their humans knowledge... Some are into online gambling, which they engage in when the humans are not around, but others will go out for scratchcards (they love the scratching part), or in extreme cases go to shady backstreet establishments that cater to feline gamblers.

Most cats seem to prefer roulette (they love watching that little ball) or wagering on budgie fights.

Unfortunately, this behavior is often the gateway to other vices, as many of the backstreet casinos also operate nip dens (sort of like an old timey opium den, but with lots of stoned cats instead)... Between the gambling and the catnip, things can spiral out of control rapidly.

A recent case highlighted in the news, told of a pair of cats in Parsipanny N.J., who were so deep in debt, they not only sold their human's car and all the furniture in her apartment, they also robbed a local bank... The cat's human companion, Wanda Nuttburger, told the authorities she never knew about the problem until a SWAT team showed up at her door.

I don't want to alarm you unduly, but you should keep this in mind... Especially should a telly go missing or other valuables vanish.

I am having slight phone issues.  I found my old "smart" phone and switched my goverment number to it, but it is having issues connecting to the internet without wifi.  I called up customer service via my skype account but found out that I had to charge up the phone to 100% percent before they will help me.  Now to wait for it to charge up all the way.  I am hoping it can be used for a hot spot but just to check email and this web form or homework or something.  Not going to use it with my computer as that is a data hog.
