Lol, that's one constant I can always count on: Stonemason always puts his enviroments and buildings in the props folder...except when he doesn't. Ok, I can usually count on it. What really kills me is when I'm looking for a lamp because I know I have this certain lamp. I search for lamp, find nothing. Because it was saved as Lmp_table_02 or something like that. That's when I have to try to remember what product it came with, track that down in DIM and look up the installed files. Oh well, it could be worse. That has become my motto.
I've reached the point in my older age that I really don't fuss too much over anything. I can usually tell when something or someone is likely to change. I lost a hard drive recently, and messed up my backup drive. The pain and confusion are fresh in my mind So I started this thread. The thread is likely to just fade away soon as other topics take over our attention. That's fine with me. I had a chance to express myself, and got some great reactions, etc. And I'm quickly recovering, mainly thanks to DIM. Next comes another attempt at dealing with categories etc.
Products for the Content Library doesn't show you all the products, and for the ones they do, sometimes all the options are not there for the product. You may think you are seeing all of it, but you're not. So I only use that as a last resort.
I'm going to give different advice- if your goal is to do art, do art. Instead of spending gawd-knows how much time making categories, just go to the store, type in what you want, and see if you own it. Example- you want to do an Old West desert scene- type in saloon, cactus, cowboy, etc See if you own them and with the Daz app, the ReadMe is there on the page. (or use the Product Library instead of store search, that's what I normally do. It pulls up the Product Page and I go to the ReadMe from there.)
Look at the files list and it tells you where the product is. For those that don't tell you, and it's an older product, check out one of their newer ones and it's probably organized the same way. And you can always just ask on the forums where something is located. Some people are absolute whizzes at knowing that stuff.
You can spend your time organizing or you can spend your time doing art. Although organizing takes more time up front and saves you time later, you may get so frustrated you never get around to the art.
That's some really good advice, Novica.
I'm starting to use google as my content library. They've mastered search, so why not?
For example, I need a paperclip. If Daz search doesn't find it, I google three things: 'daz3d paperclip', or 'renderosity paperclip', or 'sharecg paperclip', and I almost always find what I need either free, I already have it, or PC+/inexpensive. Plus, if I can discipline myself to buy it when I need it, I'll always have what I need, I'll spend less money, and I'll always use what I buy...all from focusing on creating art and not chasing sales (though I must admit, the latter can be fun too, and sometimes worth the fun...in moderation). :)
The key is I can freely let DIM install everything (or unzip to library in case of rendo) and leave it a chaotic mess (esp for older stuff without metadata), and be happy with the chaos! Would organizing my stuff make me able to find it faster than google? Perhaps. But organizing is a never-ending time sink and I'd usually rather be doing art.
Thank you, everyone for your support, understanding and insights. I've just finished reinstalling all my stuff using DIM exclusively. It's 2:45AM and I need to get my tired old self to bed.
I will spend some time in the next few days working on Categories, etc. I've said everything I wanted to say on this subject. Moderator(s) feel free to end this topic if you wish.
I've got Generalised Anxiety Disorder. I've got another problem (which is linked with the GAD), but I can't tell anyone about it, as I'm scared of what people will think of me.
I can't socialise AT ALL. I can't look into people's faces when I talk to them. I'm one of those people that would stand rather in a corner, in a room full of people than wanting to draw attention to myself. I'm also rubbish at replying to forum threads and messages for fear of either making myself look like an idiot, or that I will offend someone. It's so hard at times when trying to explain something or getting something to make sense, that I forget the little details (like in your other thread, and I put "Daz", instead of "Daz3D" - It wasn't intentional, but I thought everyone knew what I was getting at).
I love Daz Studio. It's really helped me focus on something, when I've gone through bad patches in the past.
I've got no problem with DIM. But I hate it when a new Daz Character isn't released on Tuesday or Thursday - lol
Seriously though, it's the Read Me pages that bug me. Mainly, the incomplete, the partially complete or non-existant Read Me pages. I know the Vendors have a lot on their plates with creating and releasing the products, but if I can't find something, it's nice to have a reference to tell you where the content should be and (sometimes) how to use it (I really hope that doesn't make me sound ungrateful).
@N_R Arts "but if I can't find something, it's nice to have a reference to tell you where the content should be"
The zip file itself will at least tell you where you can find it in the Content Library. Does that not help?
N_R Arts, I can only begin to understand some of what you're going through. I totally sympathize with you. I'm 68 years old, and have suffered numerous psychological problems that didn't even have a name back in the 1950s, etc. I encourage you to reach out whenever it's convenient. I don't always remember who posted each message. I apologize if I made an offensive remark. "The DAZ thing" (name) is something many people have done over the years. Just remember that you are more important than any word.
I totally encourage you to get out whenever you can. Hopefully you live in a safe place. I've lived in Senior Citizens apartment buildings for over a decade. The first benefit is that I am more than just "the old guy!" The apartment buildings I've lived in are safe. Sometimes I don't leave my apartment just because I feel lousy in a physical or emotional sense. The other day we had "National Night Out" in our building. I screwed up my courage and went. They had a guy doing live country & western music. He was loud, and everyone loved him. But it was really too loud to talk. Again, I pushed past my shyness, and sat at a table full of women. We talked a bit. They knew I was ok. I did space out just a bit because it was so hard to communicate over the loud music. I had a couple hotdogs, several cans of soda, and left after 2-3 hours.
Keep living, dreaming and hoping. Make art! You can count on me as a friend and fan. Also remember my memory fades a bit. Sometimes I get grumpy, and someone needs to give me a gentle nudge.
I apologize if I've strayed too far from the subject of the thread... or if I got too persona for some people's tastes
Here are some other responses I have after re-reading your post. Yeah I understand GAD well enough. I think you could add it to my list of ailments as well. Oh, and don't be afraid of looking like an idiot. I've done that for decades, including forum posts and YouTube videos. In my older age, I've learned to eliminate the idiotic "negative" talk, and just concentrate on sharing my humorous idiocy.
I can't say I know what you're going through, but I definitely share some of those symptoms. If I post something in a forum and someone responds to it negatively or even if they misinterpret what I said and think I was being mean, it ruins my whole day. I guess I'm sort of hyper-empathetic, I worry way too much about what other people think about me. I have to work at looking at people when I talk to them. I know that it's kind of an insult not to do it, but it's hard to break the habit. I can socialize, but I'd usually rather not. Being an introvert, it takes energy for me to interact with people. I recharge by being alone. I think with extroverts it's the opposite. Weirdos. Anyway, thanks for posting that. I've often thought a lot of those things, but never actually heard it put into words.
Kitsumo I understand what you're saying. My family as a whole experienced way too many emotional and physical challenges in life. That included an emotionally ill mother, a divorce and two more remarriages for my Dad. When I was young in school, I was shy (I am shy now). The teachers considered me cute and smart, and always wanted me to perform, answering questions, telling stories etc. I experienced many anxiety attacks etc.
I changed slowly over the years. It became easier to perform as a sort of altered ego. You could call him the Class Clown or Class Performer. Beginning in High School I was able to join the local church and sing in the choir. It helped that I was the only male in the choir, and the girls thought I was cute. I was immature and messed up the relationships. I joined the Youth Fellowship, and delivered a Solo sermon one year. The next year I did a service with one of my girlfriends. (I married her 33 years later!) I'm a self-contradiction. I might stand in front of a crowd and deliver a speech, but I shut down for the most part when it comes to mingling with a crowd.
I still don't know what anyone sees in me. These days, I'm overweight, balding, and have a rash on my face. My limbs are starting to rebel against the weight. I'm a physical and emotional wreck. But sometimes people perk up when I enter a room or start to talk. I try to greet everyone with a cheerful, somewhat booming hello. I don't always know what to say afterword, but I make a joke, and they laugh.
Hang in there, both of you.
Hmmm...
When I read the thread title, I thought you were going to be confessing to being D.B. Cooper, or the real Lindbergh baby... Or least being T.F. Munson world renowned Penguin Smuggler, Master of Disguise and Dog Burglar (not as quiet and graceful a cat burglar and they usually "mark" the sofa or some upright object).
Not that I'm disappointed or anything... Actually I'm kinda glad because I'm the real T.F. Munson and I would of been really confused if you were claiming to be me because then I would be wondering how I was you and me at the same time or whether I was real at all... I'm pretty sure I'm real because I just drank a cup of coffee and it was really bad and it's not all over the floor... Wait... That's what happens with ghosts... Never mind.
Gaah... I hope I'm not a ghost... Does this look scary?... Ghosts are supposed to be scary and I'm assuming stuff they write is scary too.
Boo!... Okay... Enough of that.
Anyway... I read this thread and just as I was about to write something I realized I have nothing of real worth, wisdom or consequence to add... So I decided to write anyway... Mainly just to say "Hiya Ron!".
I had a thought about the last thing you guys were discussing, but it's sorta gone now because I wasted so much time leading into "Hiya Ron!"...
It had something to with anxiety and not worring about what people think about you... In real life I talk exactly the way I write, bad grammar and all, and I really don't care what people think... People either find it funny, stupid or run off screaming... That's their choice (unless they are trapped under a fallen tree or something)...(then they can gnaw off a limb or just deal with it)... When I talk to other people I'm amazed at how little sense most people make... Just in different ways.
When I'm being serious I'm running two different programs, one the talking program and the other the monitoring what the hell I'm saying program... Often, halfway through, a small app will open and start analyzing "why the hell are people listening to me"... "Damn.. Is my fly open again?".
It's an annoying app and I think a lot of people have it... It likes to over analyze one's actions and such... It makes one self conscious.
Fortunately, I've learned to ignore that app... Mainly because I have short attention span and I'm great at ignoring stuff... But I what I noticed is most people, even really confident people are running around with their fly open... Most don't realize it, but if everyone did there would be a whole lot more anxiety in the world. Sometimes you just have to say "So what if my fly is open"...
The point is if you worry too much about the little things most people don't even notice about themselves, it will hold you back... It's not important if your fly is open or even if your pants have fallen down entirely, it's about... Actually it's probably important not to have you pants fall down during polite conversation... But whatever... It's more important that you be you and don't worry about what people think about you, because we all suck to some degree!
Wow... I tried to say something using metaphors and all I've done is make myself realize I need to buy pants with better zippers.
Whatever... I should go... The last time I replied to something you wrote, I think it was too long and your eyes were hurting and I just made it worse...
Its not you... It happens to a lot of people.
Anyway...
Hiya Ron!
Uh... And I guess...
Later Ron!... Cheers and all that...
McGyver, it's always great to hear from you! I actually was able to read through your entire message and might have absorbed something before it ran away. Oh wait, I'm not wearing pants!
It is called Charisma Ron, and you have it for sure! It even shows in your forum avatar photo. Living a full life lets you share some good advice about sending out a positive message and vibe into the world and often "playing a part" to hide our true selves behind. There are probebly more of "us", those with some level of personality disorder, mental health disorder or "real life" disorder as I like to think of it.
One thing I DO know is that in reality most times other folks have no idea that inside I am "freaking out" and my mind is racing all over the place. Not a lot of physical cues, like a racing heart or tighness in your chest or tingling sensations. From much study, support groups and more, I have learned to just "go for it" and "fake it 'til you make it" anyways.
We are all humans and of equal worth. Share your Art and as much as yourself as you feel comfortable with doing and hopefully you help someone else turn a "bad" day into a "better" day for having experienced some interaction with you and your art.
Live with good intentions, respect yourself and others and "Expect Miracles!" Oh ya and do not forget the lil' miracles everyday like several green trafic lights in a row or a good parking spot or a friendly smile or wave from a stranger!
JazzyBear, well said. My Dad studied psychology. Dad says Introverts are very valuable. We should never try to change those aspects which are our greatest strengths. In my past working history, I did need to "grow up" when it came to interpersonal relations, with fellow employees, etc. I had to release a lot of pent up frustration and anger. Unfortunately, it's a lifelong struggle. I experienced some crippling and dangerous experiences when I lived in Minneapolis, MN from the 1970s to 1990s. I escaped, and moved to Florida and Maine over 30 years time. Now I'm back to Minnesota, to be near my family again. (We move around a lot, but are pretty well settled back here again due to age, etc.) I've had a chance to lessen the pent up negative feelings, but they still come out sometimes. I'd rather stay home alone whenever I feel I might lose my cool.
Charisma?! Who, me?!
