    One of those days...

  • TJohnTJohn Posts: 11,339

Non-complaint:  Well, my mini-adventure for the day was a partial success, I found the alpaca farm, bought my chilli, but didn't find a pair of alpaca leather gloves that fit.  The farm is in the middle of Amish country and my dashcam  captured a couple Amish out doing errands in their sport utility vehicle.

Was the horse running that fast, or was it windy? surprise

Yes.  Horse was trotting and it was windy.  It may look fast but it was still only 1 horsepower. devil

Miss Bad Wolf, why are you in this group home?

I am not sure.  I have a mental diagnosis and had a melt down in 2012, but not sure why I am still there.

Honey, you have come so far from then.  I was with you then and I'm with you now.  You have a job, you go to the library and the Y, you are now connected to your family, and you manage your money.  You are a creator.  It's time to spread your wings and soar.  Love you.

...nice.  Back in Wisconsin there are also Amish communities in several counties including Green Lake CO which I would pass through on my way to and from college. Wisconsin has the fourth largest Amish population in the nation behind Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana.

...our last little "bout" of Summer has come and gone.  Three days in the 80s (yesterday the warmest with some locations in town pushing 90°). This year indeed broke the all time record for the most days of temperatures of 90 or higher with 32. The previous record was set three years ago with 29.

Non-complaint:  I got my car back this morning, and the wiper is behaving sanely again.  Not that anyone fixed it.  They tried but, as usual, could find nothing definite.  but my suspicion is that since the problem doesn't occur until I use the car in heavy rain or the car has been through the car wash, or it's just very humid and the car's been parked and soaked by rain, I believe the problem is moisture getting into either the wiper motor/computer case, or into the cables.  The motor/computer case has been opened, and the cables have been jiggled around so perhaps things have dried out. indecision

Regardless, since the car was behaving well today I quickly took it in for inspection and it passed for another year.  So, I'll just try to keep my cables dry and I'll keep the car for now and see what happens.

Complaint:  Inspection was a few days early so that's moved my yearly inspection into September instead of October (I lost a month) so, next year I'll have to remember inspection in Sept, instead of Oct. (if I still have the car).  Also, complaint: Fixing the power steering line was $66 parts and $56 labor for a total of $162. sad Plus inspection fee of $21 frown

I went to my local trusted used car dealer looking for a newer car and he showed me a 2012 Ford Focus.  Looks nice, I fit into it, drives nicely, but monthly payment would be about $175 + $20/month more for insurance and I looked up 2012 Ford Focus on the internet and there seem to be a preponderance of complaints about transmission troubles. no  So, I think I'll just wait and see what happens with my old 2003 Buick LeSabre.

The windshield wiper could be caused by a faulty switch, maybe it's making a connection when it's not supposed to or vice versa. If you have any friends who are more electrician than mechanic, they could re-route the wires and put a simple toggle switch on your dash so you could turn your wipers on/off. It wouldn't be pretty, but it would work when you need it.

    ...

It could be, but jiggling the switch has no effect.  We've tried that each time the wipers went berserk.  At my suggestion, the mechanic has also looked into putting a switch into the cables to disable the wipers when necessary but his report is that because of the way modern systems work he can't find a way to put a simple switch in line.  Being an engineer myself I suspect that there is, in fact, some way to cut power to the wiper motor/computer assembly but I'm not going to argue with him now.  I don't have access to the schematics and my old brain is out of practice.  If anything though, I suspect that putting a switch in the appropriate fuse line would do it. enlightened But this is a "Why fix the leak in the roof when it's not raining?" type of problem.  The problem isn't happening right now and may not happen again for another six months so I'm just going to wait and see.  If worse comes to worse, I may end up driving 20 miles with my windshield wipers going insane and they may not fix themselves and continue to run when it's not raining and it will wear out my wiper blades quickly.  I may have to use up a lot of washer fluid surprise.  One learns to live with an old friend's infirmities. frown

Rain-X.  It will reduce your need for using the wipers greatly.  Unless you always drive under 35 or 40 mph.

Yeah, I actually passed at least two Amish vehicles (neither was a typical covered buggy) on that trip.  And the occupants of both vehicles waved at me (I waved back).  Perhaps because they appreciate cars that slow way down to around 20 MPH when passing them instead of zooming by at 45-55 MPH on those narrow country roads.  I swear there was a third vehicle that day but as I went back through my dashcam footage I couldn't find the 3rd one.  Phantom Amish! surprise

That is ridiculous.   Over here we can only recycle clean items.  we wash empty cans, tins, bottles, jars, used foil etc etc before putting them in the relevant recycling box. Our councils can actually levy fines if people add dirty items to the recycling or put things in the wrong boxes.

Wow, that sounds like an awful place. I'm sure she was just doing her job, but she could have at least taken a minute to find out what the situation was. I had a supervisor that used to say "There's a difference between talking to someone and talking at them.

..while not mandatory here, I do the same mainly to prevent bug infestations.  Being in a multi use building it isn't simple to place things in the recycle bins outside after using them when you are five floors up from street level.

...management wouldn't go for that. The recycle bins are also located in the ground floor enclosed car park.

We do have rubbish chutes (3 on each floor) but then what good is taking the time out to recycle if everything goes to a landfill.

Non-complaint: Staying home today.  Done enough traveling for this week.   Put on my wireless headphones, started a playlist and tackled the pile of dishes in the sink.  And again I was re-reminded of a fantastic piece of music.  A short piece (about 5 minutes) often used as an encore after the main symphony is completed.  Exciting, and lively.  Overture to "Ruslan & Ludmila" by Mikhail Glinka  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjUijyeFMu0  Good music to zip through doing the dishes in record time. yes

Our recycling is done at the "Transfer Station".  I don't have garbage picked up regularly.  There's no organized trash pick up out here.  There are a couple of independents who have a big truck that do pick up residential trash for people but it's not mandatory or well run.  Sort of like it was done 60 years ago when I was a kid. frown  I take my own trash to the "Transfer Station" where they have big concrete holes in the ground that are huge crushing machines that everybody dumps their, garbage, trash, construction debris, old couches, etc. into.  The crushed material is then loaded on to big trucks and carried away to "somewhere"  The Trahsfer Station also has several big cardboard boxes in which to put old TVs and electronics but you have to pay $25 to get rid of an old TV or computer monitor.  There are also separate huge trash bins outside where glass, cardboard, plastic and metal can be deposited.  They no longer collect old batteries.  Lead/acid batteries have to go to a bigger facility in the county seat or turn them in at a auto mechanic's shop.  Alkaline batteries are disposed of as trash, but Lithium and other rechargeables must be turned in to stores that sell them.
