If you're running Avast or AVG and you haven't yet updated to 1803, update your antivirus BEFORE updating to Windows 10 build 1803, or else Very Bad Things may happen.

    https://www.computerworld.com/article/3276646/microsoft-windows/avast-blames-microsoft-for-win10-1803-upgrade-blue-screens-nonsensical-options.html

Also, Microsoft is (again) forcibly upgrading people to 1803 even when they've selected all the options that should delay the update. With the previous forced upgrades, setting Diagnostic Data to Zero was the trigger; Microsoft's contention is that if you're not allowing them to snoop in your computer, they are perfectly justified in forcing you to upgrade. The logic somehow escapes ... well, practically everyone who isn't Microsoft management.

(In one of the more deeply ironic moments in Microsoft's existence, it turns out that 1803 is largely incompatible with a fair number of Surface Pro 4 tablets.)

I'm very curious to know if any of the big 3D, animation, graphic art, music publishers, or game makers have allowed their artists to resist Windows 10 and stay on older versions of Windows like people here have.  I kind of suspect that this wouldn't be allowed.

...software by Autodesk (3DS Max, Maya), Maxon (C4D) the Foundry (Modo) and Lightwave as well as Adobe Creative Cloud all still support older version of Windows back to W7 (Adobe CC back to WinXP).

You misunderstood my question.  I know that software makers allow old versions.  I was asking about media content publishers.

You may wish to run TRIM on your SSD drives; unless it is already a scheduled thing.

...and a reminder to all that if you have a newer motherboard with UEFI Bios, you may very well need to flash your BIOS with a new update, so as to correct/mitigate Spectre and/or Meltdown.

Best to do this before you apply the windows updates or you may not be able to successfully boot your system.

In my opinion, those Windows updates that might have a BIOS update as a co-requisite or pre-requisiste, should not be applied; or at least make the user specifically confirm them before they are applied.  Some older motherboards don't have new BIOS updates available.  The user should be allowed to confirm this before they end up with a broken Windows install.

I have been deferring Windows updates for everything except security patches for a while now, so still working on 1607.  A couple of days ago I upgraded to a M.2 drive and I still have the older Windows install on the original SSD, so now seems like a good time to take a chance on the upgrade - if it works then fine, if it doesn't then I can hopefully reimage from the old SSD.

For anyone having serious problems with the updates, there is a Microsoft tool called Wushowhide which allows you to hide updates when they pop up in Windows Update.  Sometimes they are sent again, but overall I have found it to be very effective.

    Update on the 1803 update:

From from clicking the update button the download and installation took just over an hour.

On logging into windows I was presented with a white screen with a tiny dialogue box in the corner that I had to scroll around in. Text to speech kept popping up and I didn't know what to do - the white screen wouldn't go away, even though I could see other programs by alt-tabbing.  I finally realised that you had to pick between options using the cursor keys and enter.

Windows 10 version 1803 has a huge issue with my use of Riva Tuner Statistics Server, which I use with MSI afterburner to monitor GPU temperatures and control the fans when needed.  I got endless popups about the program.  Installing the latest version finally shut Windows up.

Daz studio is working except for Dforce which is giving me a "Can't find a valid OpenCL 1.2 device", so I will have to do some investigating.

Otherwise, everything else seems to be ok, but I need a few days of testing every program before I feel happy with the new version.

I am going to add updates in the hope that anyone facing similar problems will have an easier time:

UPDATE 1:  Updating the nVidia drivers to 397.64 solved the OpenCL issue (possibly a re-install of the 388.43 that I had installed might have worked as they were fine before the Windows update).  Seems to be fine now.  I didn't go for the latest nvidia drivers (397.93) as one of the games I play in VR has reports of some players having issues with those, so staying just behind the cutting edge. I'm really pleased to get Dforce working again as I only made the upgrade to DS 4.10 from 4.9 yesterday and I'm very impressed with the results so far.

UPDATE 2: Sound not working in VLC player, on Youtube or in games but working fine in the Realtek audio manager.  Turned out that during the update, Windows had changed the default sound output from the speakers to the Samsung TV that I use as a monitor (and have the sound turned off on).

Well, just finished creating a new disk image; installed it on an SSD ready to use. Hoping it works, considering the issues folks are having, but it's a clean install as opposed to an update, which is often an update to an update.

After reading this thread, I'm afraid to update too.

After the Fall Update, my tower has been having random restarts.

I'm not prepared to go through all of that again.

It is possible to permanently stop updates; I don't reccommend it, unless you're the sort of person who knows they will manually check for updates.

I do, but folks used to letting microsoft tell them what they need can forget. :( Wouldn't be so bad if MS didn't mess up their patches and updates so damn frequently.

Finally got the update today, and everything seems to work properly. I also happened to update my nVidia driver at the same time (it was already waiting to go), so maybe that avoided some of the previously mentioned problems. The only gotcha (so far) was turning on Ransomware protection in Windows Defender that blocked DIM and Studio from modifying the document folders (I guess MS doesn't think they're friendly enough). If you're going to use it, allow the applications before you use them or try to install something, or else I don't know what will be blocked or omitted from manifests or whatever it is that normally gets written there. The notification warns you that something was blocked, but doesn't give you the chance to permit the change, however, it does tell you to allow the app if you want.
