Ok, this has been educational. Thank you Malandar. I´m going to keep that in mind when doing armor.

Most people won't recognize this though, and general design considerations also apply. A different orientation leads to a much denser chain-mesh which results in a lot more visual noise.

No problem, sorry if  I seem to be just complaining, but it is a legitimate concern when wanting to  render characters wearing actual armor.

I had a go at trying to duplicate the pattern from the museum photo in Blender. Is this more like it? You can see the difference between the horizontal and vertical pitches at the edges.

That us exactly how mail is supposed to hang to be the most effective armor.

Wow, here I was thinking you wanted it to hang the opposite direction, which is in fact exactly what you DON'T want, lol, I feel dumb. I've made my fair share of fake chain myself and I think that was where I got confused, because when weaving it over under and all that jazz you move in the opposite direction, what would be horazontally in this picture.

But seroiusly, as to lighter weight and stronger and what is more protective, rivited mail is far supirior in all accounts. Please don't do this with your mail, but if you start at the bottom or the ends you actually can pull butted mail appart.  With rivited mail this becomes a nonissue. Also, because the links aren't dependant on the actual strength of the rings themselves to hold together they can be quite a bit thinner then with butted mail, and also far more likely to hold together from a thrust or arrow head getting caught between the links. Butted mail is what people always use in like YouTube videos to show how "powerful" thier swords or axes are and most of the time that is how they are able to "cut" through it (that and the fact they always brace it against a log or something that has no give).

But thank you for pointing this out, I see what you mean for sure now looking at that image, the links form a channel to divert the blade or whatever, much like what I said about a chest plate and breast cups. Effective armor needs to redirect the force of a blow, not just stop it.

Unfourtnatly, all the stuff I've made now is of course wrong, but hey, it's all fake anyways so I'm safe there.
