Hi there,

I'm practicing with Daz to Self Publish a WebComic. I was wondering who else (if anyone here) is doing this? I wanted to see what your art looks like and also possibly find a new story to read.. :)

Can you post a link to your comic book for us all to see the art you've come up with?

You might get more responses in Art Studio, to not rule out non-PC members. There are definitely a few people on the forum actively publishing comics.

  • Thanks!

    Hey there,

I'd like to see what kind of art Daz3D users are creating to make comic books, so post your links! (There might be a feed for this already???)

Also, I'm just starting to create my own art with Daz and wondered if anyone could answer a few questions.

1 - I just started using LineRender9000 - any tips? (Essentially I am trying to make my art similar to Archie Comics, but I'm new to Daz and still figuring it all out...)

2 - I also just downloaded PWToons and I can't seem to get the shader to trasnfor the entire image. I've got the model highlighted and the props, but the shader just applies ot the model...? Any tips?

3 - I have this cake, https://www.daz3d.com/a-curious-tea-eat-me but no shaders will apply to it... Suggestions?

    Thanks!

    1) Welcome to the world of Daz.

    2) Please get a hold of ATI's browser add-on

    https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/106296/announcing-daz-deals-browser-add-on/p1

It will add links to any product's forum thread and you should find lots of tips and hints in them.

    3) I'm guessing it's got something to do with the render engine. There's an iray version.

Maybe your shaders are iray and you're using 3Delight?

    -------------------

I do a comic series using Daz assets, but I didn't want to drop links without at least trying to help first. Those with more experience will be along shortly.

My comic is linked in my Signature. And I have a thread in the Art Studio section that I update whenever.

You should probably make one of those threads too- when you are ready. Dazer-mites are receptive to works in progress so you don't have to wait, if being fully ready is a concern.

    Welcome.

Also welcome! DS can be a bit intimidating, but I'd recommend that you go the the New Users Contest section, and participate in their contests - not because of winning (you don't even have to enter your image into the contest), but because you get first hand feedback on your images, and suggestions on how to improve things.

    1) There's a thread about Non-photorealistic renders which contains a ton of great images and useful tips here: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/227541/more-non-photorealisitic-renders-npr-ii#latest

Also, there's the official Line Render thread over in the PA Products announcement section, that has more specific information, and you can also ask questions to the PA there: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/118146/linerender9000-faq#latest

    2) For some objects, you have to select the surfaces in the surface tab to apply the shader. This is especially true if you are switching from 3DL to Iray shaders, in which case it's always helpful to convert to Iray Ueber first before applying the Iray shader.

Also, PWToon is a 3Delight shader, which will not really work in Iray. You are rendering in 3Delight? Because LineRender is for Iray, and will not necessarily understand the PWToon surface settings.

    3) see 2. It is really important to have shader/surface material and render engine match, and, as I said, for some objects, you have to go to the surface tab and select the surfaces for the shader to apply.

Comics... are in my signature, and I also post WIP stuff from the comics in the "Bee's Breakroom" thread.

I do all my comic style art after in postwork and Photoshop. It's not really like Archie Comics, but I've done some comic book cover work. I aspire to be as good as this guy, Shannon Maer,  https://www.daz3d.com/gallery/#images/551901 . He does amazing work and has tutorials/demos on YouTube but his comic style art, like mine, is all postwork, basically painting over the whole render rather than rendering as comics in DS...

Welcome to the Art thread, If comics is what interests you here are as well some interesting things colllected https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/228061/3d-comic-book-tips-and-pictures#latest

Follow the banner in my signature to my comic, which is still in the beginning. I'm not seeking for traditional comic book style though, I'm keeping the rendered look which ist a new and strange thing to most comic lovers.

    Welcome.

GRIFFIN AVID - Thank youf for your suggesitons! Got the Add On, iRay vs 3Delight - this could be some to look into. I think I am leaning twoard 3Delight becuase it is a faster render, or I just haven't figured out how to make iRay go faster yet. I will explore!

Thank you, BeeMKay! New Users contest would actually be a good one for one to check out.

Interesting about how Toon is 3Delight and LineRender is iRay. Very good points. I'm probably going to download the Manga Shaders and see what I come up with.

I'm gonna have to look up this WIP abreviation. I see it a lot and haven't figured out what it is yet, lol.

I will agree that it is strange to most comic book lovers. Though has the reception of your art changed overtime? For the betteR? Worse? There is a possibility I might keep the render version, but wanted to try the Archie thing first. That way the "magic" stuff can possibly pop off the page.. I dunno. Still playing with all these new toys.

Do you have a nVidia graphic cards? If no (like, you have an AMD card), then the renders will go to CPU by default, which is glacial. If yes, make sure it's checked as rendering device in the Advanced tab of your render settings. If that is also checked, make sure your scene fits into the GPU's VRAM. Like, if your scene is 4GB in size, but your card only has 2GB VRAM, trhe render will fall back to CPU by default.

    And WIP=Work in Progress.

  • I have an NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M 1024 MB Graphics card. The last time I checked the box next to it, it still look a long time to render (maybe since I am rendering to kind of a toon look it will be okay to stick with 3Delight? I'll continue to experiment... And I only have 1 card, can I add more? If so, how? And you sorta spoke another language with the VRAM stuff, but I think I know what you meant, lol

Pixel Question: I was informed that in order to prepare a render for print, the dimensions should be at least 3500. Does that mean 3500 W and H? I am rendering an image that I put 4000 for W and the Height is 2290. Is that still good for print or do I need to make sure everything is above 3500 pixels?

    Thanks for WIP definition :)

The card is too small. You average Genesis figure with hair and clothing needs nearly 2GB VRAM. VRAM is VideoRAM, the memory of the card. In your case, the VRAM is 1024 MB, so 1GB.

If you can add another card depends on your system. I can't answer that question. Please be aware that the memory of two cards doesn't add up, but that each card counts separately. If the scene will not fir on the card, that card will drop out of the render.

What render engine you use is up to you, and personal preference. You just have to be a bit more selective about the content, and keep an eye open about Iray or 3Delight surfaces. A lot of the new content doesn't have 3DL surface materials, and will, or will not work properly when rendered in 3DL.

If you decide to work in 3Delight, this light set is recommended: https://www.daz3d.com/advanced-daz-studio-light-bundle

  • Yep, just talked with Apple supprt. no graphics card upgrade for me. For the time being I am going to keep using my machine and in the mean time keep saving to get a better one. (Then I can keep this one and make a double moniter!)
