What's up with the Black Leather Jacket?

Is the Black Leather Jacket seriously an unrigged clothing item (presumably without JCMs), meant to be rigged and have textures applied by the end user, for the same cost as entire, fully functional outfits? Is the description missing something absolutely vital?

EDIT: Is this actually meant just for use in Maya? This is a really weird item because it has DAZ Studio instructions, fbx files, but no built-in game license like all the related items.

I think it is natively for use in Maya, but contains an fbx-version ready for import into DS, where you then have to go through all the rigging yourself.

    But damn, it looks good!

Yeah, that is some of the most beautiful texturing I have seen in a long while.

I guess the idea is the usual "figure it out fer yerself."

Yeah I saw the jacket and was like oh that looks cool... then I looked at the page, not much mentioned at all, "fits" genesis 8 female,  and those promo screenshots....bleah.  Yeah, pass.

What now? I'm glad you made this thread - I was about to buy it and didn't realize that it's a "do it yourself" type item. Does the item not work with G8 "out of the box"? Do you have to rig it yourself and everything? I'm not sure how this works. Does anyone have the product that can let us know?

I'm tempted because basic rig is simple enough; then I'd either use VWD or Dforce depending on what I need to accomplish. It looks to be all one mesh too - not important in VWD, but at least very helpful in Dforce.

Import one, add texture and rig the down-press function and you're good.

    ---------

    This boggled my mind too,

I HOPE this is an ill-advised one-shot and not any kind of trend.

I also don't know whay Daz didn't combine their artists and get someone in their roster to 'complete' this product for general population use. lol

Maybe after processing a bunch of returns, Daz will reconsider.

Basic rig might be easy for those that know how to do it.. but for those of us that don't have a clue.. it's really not. And like Griffin I sure as h*** hope this is a one time thing only.

After importing the item, load Genesis 8 Female (or the intended target).

You need the Transfer Utility, which is accessible in a couple of ways, one such:

Edit > Object > Transfer Utility

    Source dropdown: Genesis 8 Female.

Destination: the item you imported (such as the jacket).

Leave everything as default will give a basic rig.

    Edit: Click Accept

If you want to save the item for reuse, you can save as a subset, but probably better to save as a scene/prop asset

File > Save As > Support Asset > Figure/Prop Asset

    Edit2

Unparent/Unfit before saving, just in case (no idea of what, as no clue if trying to save when fitted/parented can cause issues).

Try your product library, I guess it's manual download only, as it's native Maya format, and fbx, which has to be imported into DS.

I’d be curious how well it works with dForce.

For conforming clothes leave it fitted at least.

  • Can someone post some pics when they get it working with G8? If this had been a normal daz clothing item I would have bought it instantly!

I really liked the look of the jacket and figured it should be simple enough to get it to work for my purposes. Now that I have purchased it, I am unable to find a way to download the files.  Where the manual download section usually is on the product library page is blank. Any suggestions?

  • Worlds_EdgeWorlds_Edge Posts: 2,153

I almost bought it too.  Glad I realized it requires extra steps (that I personally don't want to have to go through/figure out).

I too would be really interested to see how it looks on a posed G8F. On another day, I might have just risked buying it knowing that I could get a refund if it wasn't any good, but with the free $$$ for multiple new releases in the cart today, getting a refund on this item would mess up the entire order.

Really that is a bizarre product to have on offer and one that will cause more support issues than likely profit.

I doubt it. It was a few weeks back when Daz featured over 250 FBX versions of product. Those are still in the store. It's no surprise with the Daz to Maya plugin that Daz will try to capitalize on the Maya base. Just make a mental note to assume anything starting with "FBX" in the title is targeting the Maya users.

On the bright side, if you buy the FBX jacket and learn how to rig it, you'll be one step closer to making and rigging your own clothing objects.

Yep, no intro discount. It's showing full price. indecision

I was tempted to get it to see if I could figure out how to rig it and then post the tutorial for others. But no way am I paying $20 for a product that I have to rig myself and that I may not be able to even figure out how to. I really hope that "rig it yourself" products aren't going to become common here. It was super disappointing to me to find that jacket isn't actually usable out of the box. I don't know anything about rigging clothing and I'm sure I'm not the only one. :(

Sheesh! This hobby takes up too much of my time as it is... If I had to rig my own clothing, the hobby would probably have to go.
