I hate how the basic Victoria 8 looks, she reminds me of a horse every time I look at her.

LOL. Have to agree on that. :D

It just occured to me to apply to the figures I placed in a very memory-intensive scene the very same suggestions you gave to Wonderland. Must be telepathy!

Right, then wouldn't you want to hide body parts that are covered with clothes?

Also, should you hide anything that isn't in the viewport or will DS ignore all that automatically?

As a rule I think it ought to be good practice. Certainly there's no harm done. :) This advice was in fact given by the creators of Reality (you know, the renderer that uses Luxrender), so I believe it should apply to iRay, too.

"Oh, that's an easy one - DAZ Studio itself.  Great program with incredible capabilities and each generation gets better, BUT.... figuring out how to make it do things is an ongoing nightmare due to DAZ's unwillingness to actually provide decent documentation, there's the constant dread of installing a new update and finding that many of my favorite plugins no longer work properly and the angst of fighting a losing war trying to keep all the content organized.  So, while I love the progam to pieces and now use it almost exclusively over Poser Pro, I really wish DAZ would work a bit harder on making the actual user experience not quite so onerous.     "

Indeed the Daz studio program itself also gets my vote
    for entirely different reasons.

As an animator I love the genesis figure platform for easy creation
of a wide diversity of Character types will minumal effort.

However I hate that DS does not have a proper IK Foot/hand contact
solver  for  usable animation within Daz studio

I hate that one cannot run multiple versions of full releases without all manners of  expert install trickery.
    (unlike Blender,C4D,Lightwave even poser etc).

    On the matter of rendering,
I Love that DS has Many options to export
content to other environments fully intact for rendering

Because while I am indifferent to 3DLight( never used ,it never will),
I have a deep seated, visceral HATRED of that dumbed down, brute force, unidirectional fob of a path tracer called DS IRay.

Most of what I've seen available in other Iray plugins (like for Maya or Max) is visual canvases, rather than writing directly to them, although I'm sure there are other things about those plugins that I've missed.

Yes it is worth hiding body parts, but only if all parts that use one of the large texture maps is hidden. For example if the legs are hidden, but the feet can be seen, then hiding the legs only will only save a bit of geometry, which is the least relevant part when it comes to VRAM usage. Even hiding the torso is not too much use, assuming part of the neck and/or back of the head are visible. Best option remains is to ensure the textures are the minimum size needed, and no more. That means 2Kx2K maps for all characters except those whose face is shown in close up.

Also, if you're using dForce clothing, you shouldn't hide the geometry with which the clothing collides, because it won't behave properly. There's one recent clothing item where, as a mater of course, the vendor automatically hid the legs to prevent pokethrough, but because the pants are dForce, it then dries to drape through the legs that aren't there.

My absolute loves are the Urban Future sets by Stonemason. Such awesomely sweet sets.

I hate them because the coolest buildings don't have 4 walls :(

I love Perry Walinga's Airport Island products. You need a supercomputer if you're planning to do a full environment load, though. DAZ Studio eats up around 15GB of my SSD space just for the environment geometries and textures. I have to start with texture shader drawstyle, remove unnecessary stuff, and then switch to Iray. I love large products and a huge possibility for kitbashing but there's a point that a product is too large and cripples my other PC. His Airport Island set needs to be modularized similar to his Jumbo Jet VIP product.

Agreed... I love the product, but hate the resources it needs.

...for me it takes forever to render in Iray, even more than Urban Sprawl 2 or 3. Also newer SM products don't come with 3DL shaders anymore and because they have a lot of different surfaces they are a real pain to convert.

yea which ones?..everything except the Venezia suite comes with 3dl settings.

Kyoto Kid,I'm working on Urban Future 6 at the moment and do have you in mind as someone not able to render UF5..so the new version will be presented as a day time version with all the emissive lights off by default, and a material preset to switch them on,that should make it a little easier for you to render,I'm also avoiding any texture maps that are too large to save on memory..and of course the environments are made of multiple parts so be sure to switch off areas that the camera doesn't see.

... Venezia suite is one I was considering on getting until I discovered it was Iray only, Chinatown doesn't seem to specify 3DL/Iray on the product page so held off on that as well.  I thought there were a few others but going back and checking I did notice most  do indicate both Iray and 3DL while some mention Daz and obj.  So many new items released today only seem to have Iray shaders that it can be awfully confusing at times and easy to make mistakes, so apologies.

Basically my old CPU (1st generation i7) and Iray really don't get along very well and along with the insane prices for GPU cards today it is the reason why I have abandoned Iray for 3DL.

...on another note, a love but source of disappointment is the new HD Grand Piano.  I have been searching for over a decade for an accurate 290 CM concert grand piano that didn't cost an arm an a leg and/or have strict licensing restrictions like the ones at TS do.  I was really excited when I learned this was going to be released.  Bought it almost immediately when it hit the store and loaded into a scene to discover it only has Iray materials.  With 90 individual surfaces this is going to be a major chore to convert as Iray to 3DL is more difficult than 3DL to Iray.

I sympathize to a large degree, but hey, what can you expect? DAZ is free. ;)

Not really, if you buy content, the income from which pays for the development.

  • Items I love? Any of SickleYield's utilities. Doesn't matter what the figure is, they're some of the best resources on the market.

Valzheimer's 'Wear them All' for Genesis 3 is a valuable resource and gives new life to older products, most of which have never gotten updates for newer generations. Couple it with SY's utilities, and you can see why I stubbornly stick with Genesis 3, despite pressure to move to Genesis 8. (I'm stubborn like that, lmao)

Items I hate? Well... hate is too strong of a word, though I have a side-eye level disdain for characters that claim to be "ethnic", but are really just basic Victoria/Michael with a light spray tan. Also not a huge fan of Thorne's characters, as they all look the same to me (i.e. doe eyes, fish lips, button noses, and willowy bodies). I get that's the artist's style, and I completely respect that... but it doesn't mean I have to like it. XP

And any interior item where I can't hide walls. Not a Daz example per se, but for instantance, I love the Coflek-Gnorg Sci-fi Apartment item on Rendo, but it annoys the tar out of me that it's basically one solid piece of geometry, and therefore, I can't hide the walls. Makes trying to set scenes up a royal pain in the behind. Sure, I could chuck it into Blender and try to dissect it, but that's just way too much work for one item. I also have a Tesla3dcorp item (the laundry room/bathroom from a couple years back) and I can't hide the walls in that, either. Gahhh!

Well, I'll say it. There's a vendor or two that seem to be in a special class or tier who end up making several products- that are all linked together.

They are utility-level products so you basically have to use them or kick rocks, but I find the quality sub-par and I buy them out of necessity and whenever I use them, I wish they would work closer to how they are advertised.

I use them, but I am NEVER satisfied with the workings and results.

But I always think maybe THIS TIME they'll take some of the previous feedback to heart, but nope. Same excuses and the products end up as more of the same.

There are some categories of the Daz store where competition is sorely needed.

    - ---

Don't PM me. You know who I'm talking about. Yeah, those peoples.

    Regular pet peeves....

    - complicated products with no read me. I love to use them, but hate the extended period of trying to learn a product on my own.

    - sets that are missing a wall as if the vendor knows where I'll be putting my camera and/or chooses my shots/angles for me.

    - I still dislike characters and figures that do not take poses, but since the two biggest culprits make incredible figures, I can't complain too much. That would be The Antfarm and Hoffemeyer (SP). [and since they often include starter poses, it's all love]

    - Sets that do not have enough lights. Not everything needs to a be a spooky portrait.

    - Files that are not named properly. What's a material, what's a prop? Which material is Iray and 3Delight? Right hand, left hand? Is that the FULL BODY pose or upper or lower.....?

    - ANYTHING that is in EVERY PROMO SHOT and not included.

    -------------------

    Love and Hate made simple?

Godrays. Looks incredible, but takes forever to render.

I share your sentiments here. It's just so frustrating having an otherwise groovy interior which has parts you can't make invisible (without making the whole thing invisible).

Regarding the Sci-fi Apartment, though, did you check to see if the walls etc might have different surface materials? If so, then you can hide the parts you don't want by reducing their opacity to zero. :)

Pet hates are product presets that resize my image or give it new dimensions, and worse still, those that give the background of my viewport a new colour.

  • Oso3DOso3D Posts: 15,115

    Piano takes that much work?

Apply ubersurface, turn on displacement and trace and reflection, set reflection to ray trace, str 25% and 15% blur.

    Maybe 2 mins tops

  • kyoto kidkyoto kid Posts: 42,363

...saw the example in the 3DL thread and agree with Steve looks blurry and kind of flat.  The work I am doing while rather painstaking is yielding excellent results so far. I'm using the closest 3DL material resources I have for each material, then making numerous adjustments to each one to come as close to the Iray ones as I can.  For softer/rough materials like the bridge, damper, and hammer felt, it also means re-importing the bump/normal maps and adjusting their depth.

This is where having a good library of merchant resources pays off.

I've been using the shorts from Casual Surf Wear for Genesis across generations for years, because they're a very nice basic pair of shorts. Unfortunately, I'm very limited in what shaders I can apply to them, because they belong in the UV Map Hall of Shame. The front of the left leg and back of the right are oriented one way, the back of the left is opposite, and the front of the right is rotated 90° from any of the others.

It's not really a "product" but I have kind of a love/hate relationship with dForce. I LOVE it when I can get it working right, but when things explode I want to tear my hair out. lol The cool thing is though, it's such a new technology and I know that it's only going to get better and better! :)

"Fellas", plural, is shifting to unisex, just like "guys" is. "Fella", singular, is still primarily male. And when he's someone's fella, he's definitely male.

Thank you for the clarification. The English language is so confusing - and when it shifts and changes over time that makes things more confusing, even to people who's primary language is English. lol
