Running two sessions of Daz Studio on the same content library
in The Commons
Hi all!
I'm wondering: can Daz Studio be run twice using the same content library: Can you open it once and load up a scene to let it render, and then open it up again and use it to model a new scene, while both sessions use the same content library, possibibly using the same content in both sessions at the same time.
Can it be done? If so, does it require instaling Daz Studio twice in two different directories (if possible) and adding the same content directories once installed? Or does it require for instance two different computers, connected over the same network?
Thanks a lot,
Me

it can run multiple copies; I do it often.
You just need the system resources; I often have something rendering, another doing a cloth sim with VWD, and still another setting up scenes. They don't normally cause issues, but can if you update settings, window layouts or add a new library.
Thanks for the reply!
How do I set Daz Studio up to do that? Or do I just have to open it, minimize the window and open it a second time?
I run an intel i7 6950X CPU and two Nvidia Titan X Pascal 12GB GPU's. I do render out scenes as image series containing up to seven G3 figures in SubD 1. Do you think I can render and set up scenes at the same time?
What dod you mean by "update settings"? Will it cause issues if I change render settings for instance?
Thanks a lot,
Me
yeh just open it again, or right click on the taskbar (where I have it) and select the scene to open.
no. issues relate to adding new libraries, plugins, changeing the screen layout, adding new scripts to the menu.
Some just don't work or aren't available next time you open Studio; I don't recall anything actually crashing Studio, but I wouldn't rule it out.
Thanks!!!
If you want two DSes open it would be safer to use the release and the beta versions. Running two of the same channel there is always a risk of conflicts, since they share settings and temp folder (that last, in particular, can cause issues if one instance does something to clear it while the other is using files it contains).
ATTENTION BIG HINT:
My 2 cents.
Found something weird. Testing my first animation.1500 frames.
Each frame has 70 iterations on 3071x1728. Now it get's funny.
2 different Camera animations. Rendertime per frame is 20 seconds with Iray on either camera. HDRI only.
Now I opened the same scene 2 times, and rendered BOTH(diff cam) at the same time, just for testing fun. Now rendertime per frame = 30 seconds!!!!!!!
Meaning. Rendering Camera1 Animation and then Camera2 Animation=40 seconds/F(20 each). Rendering Both same time = 30 seconds....
Rendering only with GPU....GPU+CPU was NOT faster, only more unstable. Using BETA because of GTX 2080.
Weird but true. Have not tested with different scenes. I think they share some data internally on the GPU, which does not need to get calculated twice. Also less downtime for GPU in between frames. Chance both frames finish same time=minimal.
Sometimes rendering falls back to CPU only....happens sometimes after 30mins, sometimes I can render for 9 hours no prob.Even happens when doing nothing else on PC. Still not found the cause. All same scene same settings.

Using beta only. I render same scene on one instance, and work with same scene on 2nd instance...I reload/open the same save all the time....no probs.
Interesting, if I ever start using Iray I'll remember your tip:) Btw, 20 sec/frame at that pixelsize...crazy fast...impressive!
yeah and nearly no grain downscaled to 1440p....was intended as preview only...but quality is already perfect.
Maybe works with 3dlight too. I don't use CPU....got a 8700k but rendertimes are 5% more with CPU....also VERY unstable....falls back to CPU only ALOT while doing other stuff.
So GPU only...2 instances of DAZ rendering + watching vid/browsing + batchprocess of 1500 images + rendering video.....no lags. still room for more :))
Character with Hair/Cloth+probs.
Secret is to reduce sub-d where you don't need/see it.
Also reducing Texturesize, where not needed.
Big thing is not to use lights. INSTEAD, a HDRI with BRIGHT Spots that create nice shadows, and often looks better than light setup. Rotate Dome to "setup" light.
Also no use of collusion nowhere, since animation and hand on stocking doesn't work with collusion/smoothing. (Pushed weightmap)
http://www.hdrlabs.com/sibl/archive.html search for "tunnel" looks most boring but is best.
It was intended as preview setting, but the resulted video is very clear and sharp.
Only a small part of the 3071x1728 image...due to nudity reasons ;)
pic is only like 15% of the full image....so heavy zoom...and only 1 frame of the 1500frames animation. After downscale to 1440p....much clearer.
Making 3D since 3 weeks now....but astonished about results....you should see the video....she is alive...breathing moving/bodyparts/diff pose/expression and stuff :)) Even modelled her myself.
18 hours a day I learned that stuff for past 3 weeks. Looks absolutely photoreal.
My Sister said she could not tell it's 3D. Noone else has seen anything ;)
btw the pic is UNPROCESSED yet....only IRAY
Wow just realized this tipp is never heard before. You don't need to have 2 cameras. Just diiff framerange, Just woke up and finished all renders. But l will try later to open project 3 times and render 0-500 in 1st 500-1000 in 2nd and 1000-1500 in last. I suspect I can reduce render times nearly in half.
Why I find this stuff after 3 weeks and the original programmers did not "play around with that"?? Easy to put in an option "render multiple frames at once" for rendering an animation. If done in one instance...less memory.
...what about using two networked machines with Daz installed on each and having both access the same library drive?
I do this a lot. Sometimes I admit to having up to 3 or more sessions up and running at the same time. Mostly when I'm making poses. It takes so long for things to bake and save (usually 10 minutes), that I open another sessions and start working. I don't do anything too memory intensive though.
Works fine. I have two networks, both with an "assets libary" PC for my content librarys with two and three render and/or setup boxes accessing them via network.
...thanks for the confirmation. The plan is to use the original workstation primarily for rendering (as it has the Titan X which won't fit in the other case) and the second system for building scenes, modelling etc. The library/runtime drive (2GB) is on the render system.
IIRC you're using Skylake's and Win 7?
My offline network is the same and the online one a mix of Win 7 & 8.1 (+ not relevant to DS Win 10 & Debian) on mostly Haswell so you should be right.
...nah Westmere Xeon. in the render system and Sandy Bridge i7 in the assembly one. Both running DDR3 1333 memory.(Render System 24 GB, Assembly System 32 GB).
Xeon or Xeons? If it does the job, it does the job. Hell, my media server is "powered" by a Core 2 Duo E7600, seriously needs replacing but priorities. New GPU or three first.
To be honestly ; I'd've been happy as Larry with a couple of 7/8 year old 10 core Xeons for a render box.
How do you access the beta versions? This would be worth a try.
You know he meant to use public in 1st instance, and beta in 2nd, or vice versa. BUT: I use only beta, and work always with multiple instances, same save....reload/open/restart all the time,...no probs. I think he is wrong there.
You need to unlock it in Installmanager...In settings/Download check Publishing or private build..then you see it in "ready to download". Also, the Beta is a must have with GTX 2000+, since normal built can't use it.(Found out after 60 hours of DAZ, that my GPU is NOT used at all)
Could not test rendering same scene 3 times,...since it blew my memory somehow....just have 16GB. But 2 times works like a charm.(Tested it rendering for 4 hours in 2 instances(half frames).....30% faster than rendering the same animation in 1 instance.)
And when GPU only, I don't even feel he is rendering. CPU load ca. 20%.
Also, CPU is not important for rendering. I render 5% slower with CPU+GPU(8700k/GTX2080) and the system is getting much louder, and it often falls back to CPU only, even when I untick some cores. GPU only is faster and quieter. I heard someone with a 48 core said the CPU+GPU boosts only 20-30%....so a normal CPU would not help much. Also, you have room for working in other instances. Splitting workload between CPU/GPU eats also resources. That's why it's probably slower for me. But think depends on the system. But just test this shit. No general rule.
Ah, so I can't do this with a 1080Ti? Oh well.
nah....beta has support for GTX 2000+....AND the older ones......lol....why you assume that it is ONLY for GTX 2000+....lol....funny. Just google how to get beta, I think you also need to click something on your accountpage...not sure
You need to have the beta to use a 20x0 card, but the beta dos still support older cards (it still works with my 750Ti).
Right,I will try Mr Google.

...would love to build a totally dedicated render box myself (I also work in Carrara as well as 3DL) but need a bit of a windfall even for that
I use a common library on a networked drive. I set the scenes up on one computer then render them on the other. It makes the workflow much easier if you are doing comics.
