Stupid Statement of the Episode Award: two CLA grads measuring the length in miles of Mallegans travels on a clearly marked giant map.  When trying to figure out how he got past South America, Mr. Genius states 'He tok the Panama Canal' and totally mis-measured.  One of the onlookers finally yelled that there was no Panama Canal in Megellans time, and the grads finnay did it right.

So much for my respect for UCLA... honestly, Panama Canal?  Did Columbus dig it or something?!?!?!?

My take on college students: (this is a generalization , of course)

Those who are there on their own dime, are there to learn.

Those who are there on daddy's dime (again, generally speaking), are there to party.  It's the partying type who tend to get on things like amazing race, methinks.

This matches my observations.  All my high school classmates tha had their way paid pretty much ended up in mediochre jobs except my friend Gary, who had a scholarship and an intership and ended up a senior analyst at the Mitre think tank!  Pretty scary observation, how many millions down the toilet, I wonder?

Ooh, ooh, Mitre.  Cool!  I worked there for 10 years. surprise  Great experience.  If I needed a physicist I walked down the hall.  If I need a chemist I walked down the hall.  If I needed an optical engineer I walked down the hall.  If I needed a mathematician I walked down the hall.  If they needed software they came to me. cool While there I worked with several people with Doctorates, patents and books under their belts.  Me,... I was the low man on the totem pole with a BSEE degree. indecision But it was mind opening experience.  I worked in the Washington DC area (Tyson's Corner & Reston, VA) campuses.  But I did visit the original Boston area (Bedford, MA) campus a few times, and met some of the old timers.  POW, mind blown!!! yes  I still keep my 5 year (silver Cross pen deskset) and 10 year (14k gold Cross pen & pencil deskset) loyalty gifts on my desk.  I contributed to several Mitre papers but none of my own were ever properly finished and published. sad  Although, the draft versions were well circulated internally and used appreciatively. yes

It was so wonderful to be able to sit at lunch or in an office, or walking down the hall and let fly with conversations about things that mattered with people who were sophisticated, knowlegable, thoughtful and reasonable.

Gary worked at Tysons Corner.. he has a Masters in EE.  Very smart guy in many ways.

I ended up going in a different direction, straight out of high school in coding in FORTRAN for a guy who had some advnced degree in structural engineering.  Brilliant guy, couldn't code his way out of a wet paper bag though.  Also worked with a PhD in theoretical math, zero common snse but bar-none brilliant.

I've spent a decent amount of my career not being the idea man, but being 'the implementor'.  I enjoy making things work, I'm not big on stuff that has no immediate practical application.  Which is weird as when it comes to music and writing I'm almost pure creative!! WTF?!?!??!

My big brag is that I've shipped more commercial products than most folks I know, Gary was always ticked off that I had no degree and more people in the industry knew of me than him!

I told him to quit Mitre and write comuter games and he called me a rude name... hee hee.. always been a certain competitive tension between us!

..yeah I kind of fall in the "idea person" arena.  I can basically see how something should work and ways it could be set up, but do not have the "nuts & bolts" expertise to create it myself.

For example, one of my latest peeves is the lack of a decent set of lightweight turn signals and brake lights for bicycles.  The technology is there today, particularly with bright low power LEDs and digital control.  I can see how such a system would be configured using a small LIon battery pack that straps to the horizontal frame tube with a double touch thumb button on each handlebar and a micro switch either in the brake levers or rear calipers for the brake lights, but I do not have the technical expertise (nor the dexterity anymore) to actually physically put it all together.

Crikey if someone can come out with a laser system that visibly projects the boundary of a "bike lane" 10 feet in front and behind the rider which moves with the cyclist (yes such an item is exists) than a set of turn signals with a brake light should be child's play.

I'd use a Raspberry PI with a 9-volt rechargable and a LiPo to power high-efficency LEDs.  Microswitches on thebrake levers as the calipers are too close to the dirty side of things. You can get waterproof translucnt containers for the LEDs and run power cables in via grometted holes (keep crud and water out).  Maybe RGB LEDs to make the device more flexible.

If you wanted it even cheaper you could use a Microchip PIC16F to drive it, the chip itself can be had for less than two bucks, quantity 100.  I could likely have the PCB fabbed for about the same amount.  Everything else can be had off-the-shelf.

Anything else I can help with? :-)

I do not understand the trend for young men to have beards these days.  Big full bushy ugly beards.  If God had meant males to have beards he would have made hairs grow out of their face.   Oh... wait....  Nevermind! blush

But, if God had any sort of design esthetics or grooming panashe he would have made the hairs break off after they were more than a half inch long! cheeky

Almost all the mean in my life have favoured facial hair.   Dad had a moustache on and off, but never the full set till he retired. Younger brother favoured a beard.  In fact it was quite funny because when they got engaged his fiancee said to him "I have never seen you without a beard"  so he shaved it off and she went  "Oh  no don't like that, put it back"   My first husband was into a moustache, in fact wanted to grow a "Flying Officer Kite" one, which I wouldn't agree to.  His 2nd wife agreed, so he now has a full handlebar moustache.  2nd husband was into mutton chops, full victorian style and slightly longer hair, Himself,  my late partner had the full set.  My eldest son, like his father, played around with a moustache,  but always a neat and tidy one, as he was a chef.  Younger son has the full set.

My thought is this: at one time there were no such things as balaklavas or face coverings to protect you from the wind, so adding a nice built-in insulator made sense.  Kind of dim to leave women stuck without something to prevent windburn.  Now facial hair makes no sense at all but God is too busy trying to keep the human race from killing itself off to go back and fix the issue.

    Sh She invented shavers. :-P

Some folks have the face for hair, and the beard-growing capacity.  Mine grow to about 1/3 inch... and stops.  3 weeks and all I have is a tough salt-and-pepper stubble, very unbecoming on anyone.  Zero good against the wind, too. :-(
