Shadows of eyelashes and eyebrows!?

Hi,

I've been encountering this weird (and probably common!) problem lately:

1. G3F's eyelashes are casting shadows on her face.
2. I removed the eyebrows on a paint software (it's painted on a jpg file as one of the textures) yet oddly enough the outline of the brows are showing

Please see the attachment for an illustration of the problem.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks!

  • Which materials and render engine? If you want to lose the lashes completely just remove the Opacity/Cutout Opacity map and set teh Opacity/Cutout Opacity to 0%.

Thanks, the materials are from Ezmi for Genesis 3 https://www.daz3d.com/ezmi-for-genesis-3-female, it says it uses G3F UV Base. I rendered in 3DL, for this I have to first apply the materials and then a 3DL shader that comes with the product. Do I need to tweak anything apart from that you mentioned?

EDIT: 3DL doesn't have any cutout opacity option...also how do i get rid of the eyebrows outline?

The brows are most likely also painted on the face's bump or normal map, or both. Also check the specular map. You'd need to photoshop them off those textures as well as the diffuse texture to remove them completely.

Opacity is the name in 3Delight, usually, Cutout Opacity is in the Iray Uber shader.

I want the lashes there of course but without them casting those awkward shadows. Setting the opacity to zero would remove the lashes completely.

EDIT - double posted as below by mistake and couldn't delete the comment.

Thanks! I haven't tried it out yet but I believe it should work!

  • In Iray if they are visible they will cast shadows (unless you switch rendering to Interactive mode, but that disables a lot of other things too).

I render in 3delight, any tweaks for it?

  • Ah, I see the issue. I think what you need to do is lower the Shadow Bias setting on any shadow-casting lights - it's an offset, in cm, designed to avoid self-shadowing but in this case it's opening a gap between the lash shadow and the lashes, which is being exaggerated by the glancing angle of the light.
