I'm not sure why people are freaking out about it being so "soon". Did they do this to G2 and G3 releases as well? The figure releases are on a 2 year release schedule. G2 came out two years after G1, G3 came out two years after G2, and now G8 has come out two years after G3. If they stick with the same schedule as they have the past few figure releases, we'll be seeing G9 in June 2019.

Not looking forward to two years from now seeing AGAIN so many complaining posts about it being "too soon". Just get over it. Get on board with the new figure or pass it up. No one is forcing you to keep up with each figure line release.

If I recall from 2 years ago there was even more hysteria about "Genesis 3" being too soon, including people that urged everyone to boycott the new figure to punish DAZ from abandoning Genesis 2 too early. Needless to say the boycott was ignored by most, and Genesis 3 went on to become a massive seller. I assume Genesis 8 will do the same, indeed I hope it does, as DAZ needs the money it gets from content in order to make improvements to the software, for which it earns nothing.

Regardless we can not say this release came from nowhere, after all we have had a fair few hints, officially, and through forum guesses that V8 was coming soon, so I am confused why people are surprised at her arrival today, albeit I was expecting it on June 20th, so it came 5 days earlier than I thought.

Yes, the last switchover was met with a bit more "Concern" than this time round.

I don't think too many people are "surprised" by the new arrival. I'm barely around these days and I knew about it a few days back!

To be fair people will make the argument
that the eventual abandonement of content support
for the older figures, "Forces" them to upgrade.

People Like new content and the Daz business model is based
on selling new content so "passing it up"
is not an easy option for many users.

There will always be content creators making content that gives you the option to use the new shineys on older figures. G8 comes with clones for Genesis, Genesis 2, and Genesis 3 so that's probably going to make the job for them a little bit easier. I'm sure great content creators like SickleYield and others will be creating ways to make G8 content more compatable with older figures.

from this endless pursuit if you learn to create content yourself.

This quote right here is the truth!!!!  I will probably invest in V8 to just learn the new model and play with it, but V8 is where I'm going to stop.  I want to liberate myself, like wolf359 suggests...which is very sound advice.

Why V8? Why not (the free) G8?

I also love the backwards compatibility AND the incredibel buy V8 Pro Bundle get V5, V6, & V7 Pro Bundles Free!

I'm a Carrara user, and V8 won't work  for me.

My reason for this post is to ask WHY?

WHY do we need V8 so soon?

Just look at some of the new characters for V4 (in one of the other stores), look what they can do with THAT technology.

Daz has yet to fully push its Victoria 6 to the limits of its technology!

    Not to mention Victoria 7.

I just wish you guys let the technology breathe a little. I have no doubt in short order you could have gotten V8 quality renders out of V6!

I'm not saying don't try to make great looking figures, just use what you have and make it stretch.

I just saw a link in a signature to V8 usability in Carrara in this thread -

OOPS!  Sorry, that's Genesis 3.  My bad.  I need to learn to read.

I see the improvements in V8, and they are certainly attractive.

However, I have enough content to learn from, that I simply will continue to learn from that. I simply have not outgrown the potential of what I already have.

When the time is right I will use V8.

    RIGHT!

I really wish Daz would improve the animation capabilities of DS. It still can't touch Carrara on animation, and Daz hasn't updated Carrara in YEARS.

I've already purchased V4-V7 Pro Bundles, but I did get a good discount on V8. I'd really like to see some G2 and G3 pro bundles go on sale.

If there's any chance at all of updates for Carrara, Bryce, etc, it's only going to happen if DAZ profitable. Thus, the onward rumbling of the content retail leviathan is a necessity.

Quite doubtful unless DAZ sees some serious sales. Bryce for Mac has been broken for years and there's no sign of that change. Frankly, I wish they would release it to public domain and let us change and update it.

I think people are actually pretty calm this time around.

There wasn't much of a fuss when V3 came out, V4's release was met with some vigour.

All hell broke out when Genesis came out and Genesis 2.

I remember threads being shut down and insults flying left and right. It was ugly even by MY standards.

  • Mmm. I'm barely into G3, honestly. I had quite a bit set up for G2, with my misc. figures.

Which is kind of my main issue - I have characters I've set up that I'd really like to just ... keep using, and keep using new stuff (poses, etc. included) for. Sure, V4's popular and some new stuff sneaks out on 3rd party sites for her, but how much new is there for Genesis, 2 gens down the line? G2 was kind of a sweet spot. G3 kind of got rushed past - at least that's how it feels to me.

Yes, I know it's a paid product (and ... what was that in the thread about the creator passing?) but I'd feel slightly less irked about this if I could at least transfer shapes/morphs to new generations natively... *shrug* I'll play with new and old. i think I'll be sticking with G2 mostly for a while, since that's where most of my "stuff" is. G3 feels just orphaned now...

Meh.  That's kind of how I feel about Vicky 8.  To echo your point Tsarist, Vicky 4 with the right shaders looks fantastic - I honestly think Daz have hit a point of diminishing returns with these new figures.  I get why they release them - that's how they make their money.  But I don't see much difference between the generations anymore.  And that's not because the new figures are bad - it's quite the opposite - Daz's figures are really really good, and there's simply not much more for them to improve upon.  I would get more excited to see some improvements to dynamic hair and cloth.   The figures themselves are so ultra-realistic that it looks jarringly odd to see poorly-draped conforming clothing or hair on such a photoreal figure.  I'm not picking on anyone here, and some vendors make better clothing sets than others, but that's where I think Daz has an opportunity for improvement.

The good news? Since I never really invested in Vicky 7 / Genesis 3 content, the whole store is now going to go on deep discounts for me! Yay! Victoria is dead - Long Live Victoria!

The money argument is invalid. They could have easily just expanded Genesis 3 with more content and with less effort/development cost than creating a new Base figure.  I'd rather see expansions on the engine like, physics for hair. clothing, objects, realtime physically based rendering similar to what game engines or iclone uses.  All features I would pay for. None of the features for the figure are really new or an improvement over Genesis 3. I already have better skin shaders, backwards compatability, bends, musculature with Genesis 3. I'll get V8 content since there will be a G8 clone for G3 to transfer clothing but I will probably skip most characters unless they are truely unique and Genx update is out which probably won't come out for a while.

I guess I won't be buying new G8 characters at all except for maybe a monster or unique toon but that is it. GenX is one of the major reasons I even consider moving to a different Figure base.

I get new content needs to be made, and I'm all for daz trying to make money to make profits, stay in business, and all that. What I don't understand is the business model.

We are currently on a treadmill where we repurchase all the same models, along with remakes of all their same clothes, over and over, instead of fully developing what is already there. For example, you have all these characters that come out, along with their bundles, then two weeks later another character comes out with their bundles, and so on. Once the new bundle comes out, the old character is pretty much forgotten about. Content could easily be made for all these Liliths and Olympias and Ophelias. You can improve the quality of items, you can offer more texture sets, you can create more and different outfits outside of the same bikinis and skimpwear. There is so much that is left untapped in a rush to move on to the next thing. And then, just as the content creators get well versed in the new generation, all that goes out the window as well.

I bought V8 and the g3 morphs and all that, and hope she does well, but it really does seem like we keep re-inventing the wheel.
