Can I use this tool also for animation or is this only for one still frame.

Scene optimizer is useful for animations. Since it optimizes properties that are not animatable (textures, maps, etc), these optimizations impact all frames. They help you fit busy scenes onto your GPU (assuming you are using Iray and an Nvidia card). Since GPU rendering is much faster than CPU rendering, scene optimizer potentially helps your entire animation render faster.
