    Never has a single problem with them and I've had a lot of computers and have added dozens of drives to different computers. You just have to be aware of which version (Green, Blue, Black, ect). You need the one to match your needs.

    Nice advertisising but what does "build in in blue and create in black" actually mean? If I want to build a PC and use it to create art, which do I need? My drive is green and this page doesn't even mention it.

    Not sure, I was more refering to the descriptions below (Black for performance (speed and high disk activity) and Blue for normal desktop work with less disk activity). I'd probably go for Blue for 3D rendering as it doesn't depend so much on disk activity and speed, though personally I wouldn't buy any with less than 3 years of warranty and preferably 5. As for Green it looks like they don't make them anymore - except for Black which runs at 7200 RPM all the others run at 5400 RPM like Green.

    I formatted it as NTFS which can go above 2 TBytes. The problem is that the computer is seeing the disc as only 2TB. If you look at it in disc management it shows the disc and the volumes on it. You have to create a volume and then format it. You can have more than one volume on a physical disc, each volume appears as a seperate drive with it'sown drive letter in Windows. But disc management only shows this as a 2 TByte drive and only lets me create one 2 TByte volume on it.

    I'd try the HDSentinel trial and see what it says, it will report any problems in a language understandable by humans.

    You could also try formatting it with Boot-It (trial fully functional), it can also show detailed information about the disks and partitions.

    I think you already looked into this, but just in case you did not, could it be related to the maximum disk size supported by your BIOS for booting Windows on a 4TB disk?  I'm currently using a 4TB boot disk that is only recognized as a 2TB boot disk for that same reason because I forgot my motherboard is too old to support that ability when I made my last disk purchase.  non-boot disks are fine at 4TB.  Even if you should be able to do it, I wonder if some setting somewhere got changed that set you back to this point by disabling it?  Don't know enough about the system to know if that's likely or possible though, it's just an idea to consider.

    I'm not using this as a boot disc. It's the second disc in my computer and I just use it for data. I had a look through the BIOS settings, the SATA setting only had two values, AHCI and RAID. It was set to AHCI and I left it at that

    I saw a comment on the internet from someone that said the BIOS doesn't always report disc sizes over 2 TB correctly, maybe this is related to the boot disc limit? I also have a third disc with Linux on it, this is 3 TB but the BIOS shows it as 849 GB, disc management in Windows shows it as around 2.8 TB.

    The whole thing is fairly confusing and has reduced my confidence in the reliability of Windows. I'm using this disc again but making sure I can't lose anything important if it fails again.

    I can't remember when I bought it, I think its around 5 or maybe 6 years old. It's a Dell Alienware Area 51 old style model, not the newer one with the tapered looking case. It was considered a high spec machine when I bought it.

    There is a good chance that your HDD somehow lost the information that it was formated as GPT and somehow reverted to a MBR partition even if shown as GPT partition in Windows. Having an old motherboard with an old bios may not help

    There was a solution without requiring to boot on a linux ( sorry to be late ) : use diskpart to clean the disk and reformat it using GPT

    There is a risk on the user side as if you select the wrong disk, you'll erase your datas.

     

    I advise to check your disk's S.M.A.R.T Status to know if it's going to die. There is a free tool from Acronis that does just that http://www.acronis.com/pl-pl/homecomputing/download/drive-monitor/

    Also run a full Checkdisk

     

    I don't think the problem is Windows. I'd rather question your HDD controller, your SATA cable or your PSU.
