i know there are ones that are available and free to use but which ones if any allow the meshes to be distributed as part of a mesh model for commercial distibution.? presumably open scource might do it but which ones....thanks.
First, you have to be careful. There are many "free" sites that have models for which they do not have actual permission to distribute, in the first place. Second, even when a mesh model is given with the intention of allowing commercial use, you may want to check, and if not explicit, seek permission as some may require you to distribute as long as it isn't changed or with attribution to the original creator. Always be safe rather than, later, sorry.
Programs do not have the ability to make a mesh royalty free. However, there are some programs which create trees and plants that do not allow distribution or are only for personal use. Again, you have to read any EULA or info which comes with the program you use.
Any 3D program (I recommend the amazing and free program called Blender, https://www.blender.org/ ) will create a mesh that's yours to do with as you wish...as long as YOU made it and didn't copy it from somewhere else.
The tree creators for game engines explicitly allow distribution. Try something like Forester Pro.
are you sure it applies to meshes ...because what usually found was that they didnt mind the models being locked up inside a runtime game file for commercial use but balked on the meshes being offered for sale just as meshes.

yeah ..acctually i meant to investigate this ..apparently they offer a tree generator as a basic utility so presumambly that would be yours to sell as part of a commercial venture without copyright worries.... maybe this is the only program that offers this???
i think there is an ivy generator that must be royalty free in terms of mesh because i see it popping up all over the place on the daz3d sellers market
for trees I use GrowFx,in the past I used xfrog, your best bet is to either read the license for each app or just email them directly, asking via email was how I ensured growfx or xfrog trees could be sold as standalone models, and how I found out speedtree and plant factory trees couldn't,I don't know Forester Pro but many of the tree generators in different game engines(speedtree in unreal for example) will only allow those trees to be used in games that use those engines the tree generators come with, much like plant factory trees can only be distributed via e-on softwares only channels

can you clarify this a bit more, if I am reading that correctly modelling a plant in Carrara, Hexagon or Bryce and redistributing it would be prohibited?
i think this is pretty good....it has a built in personalised copyright attachment that you can tag onto your creation so any mystery about who owns it is dispelled ...and for a free app its pretty darn good....even plants are covered as well...!!

thanks ..i also use max so i will check out those options... i see fx is having a black friday sale...
just trying the demo of growfx ..seems quite complex but feels like its running the same underlying code as ngplant....im thinking ngplant acctually might be better in a way if you just want a basic tree.

Ivy Generator has been integrated into several 3d apps(I use it in 3dsmax) ,but most are based on this free system http://graphics.uni-konstanz.de/~luft/ivy_generator/
