    seismic activity is hotting up over there again 

    some Australian as well as other tourists have lost their lives

    so once again I am worried for our ANZAC allies

    well... they were walking around inside an active volcano.... which had a warning issued on it's activity 3 weeks ago

     

    I don't blame the tourists.. I blame the tour guides and companys that let them go into that zone.

    When I lived in Zurich my boss used to visit Sicily every year & I asked him if they visit Mt Etna and he said "No way!" There is also Pompei that build their town to close to a volcano. I'm not sure how far it is now from that volcano though.

    I had an online buddy that used to live close enough to etna, he could take nice photos everytime it so much as coughed, used to post some amazing photos. I would never live that close to a volcano lol, but then again I bet there are plenty of people that think the same about living right on the ocean lol. Just about everywhere in the world has some sort of mother nature fury risk, some more spectacular than others.

    Pompei is the same distance from the volcano as it was 2000 years ago when it got buried, However now it is just a set of ruins and some souvenir shops, so if got got zapped again the loss of life would be a lot lower.

    Now if the poisonous gas cloud rolled down to Naples instead, that would be a different matter.

    I live in Auckland, NZ. I watched the local news report of the eruption which contained a snippet of a conversation with a vulcanologist who was saying that there has been increased volcanic activity on the island for the past few weeks. Unfortunately, the experts do not (yet) have a say in who visits the island and when - this is currently the responsibility of the tour operators. Now there are calls for an investigation and those responsibilities might shift to better qualified officials. The Prime Minister has already announced an inquiry.

    As for living on a fault line, yes we do. So does California with a population almost 10 times that of New Zealand.

    And then there's Japan, with a population that's three times that of California.  Mount Fuji, that pretty mountain that you can see from Tokyo... which all by itself has a population the size of California's... is an active volcano. 

    People who don't grow up in geologically active areas have a different perspective on it than those who do.  I'm originally from California and I happened to be in Los Angeles for the big series of quakes they had in July with a group that was partially from Texas and partially from Japan.  The Texans were freaked out because it was the first time most of them had ever felt the earth move under their feet, whereas the Japanese (and I) were a lot more zen.
