Older product and 3dl are pretty much synonymous.. if it doesn't say Iray or include Iray settings / shaders in info, it's a safe bet that it doesn't support iray

...I use it a lot with Iray and it works fine.  Just remember to set 3DL Lighting Mode for normal cloth to Matte or it migfht look like plastic when rendered in Iray.

I also convert to Iray by applying the Base Uber Iray shader using the "ignore" option then make, any final suirface adjustmemts that are needed.

Thank you, Kyoto Kid! :) I can never tell with the older products if they are 3DL only.

Except that's thre's really no set rule.  A lot of product designed for 3DL loads just fine in Iray, frequently even without applying the shader, and my experience thus far has been that a good portion of my products that are only labled Poser actually load much better in Iray than in 3DL.  It would be NICE if DAZ or the PAs went back and double checked things, but a lot of those folks aren't really around anymore and at least DAZ has their 30 day return policy.

The problem is asking some interns or something to go through 25000 products and test if they work in Iray, for a really hard to quantify and probably incredibly low increased number of sales.

I mean, yeah, it'd be great if they did that, it's just unsurprising that they don't.

Theoretically the only things that won't work with Iray are procedural materials, actual shaders (Fabricator is NOT A SHADER...it's a series of shader presets) and render scripts.  The degree of how well anything will autoconvert is a matter of opinion.

I'm more likely to use the PD iRay shader kits these days too, but used to use The Fabricator a lot. Nothing that no one else has already mentioned, I know - I just wanted to add how much I love your new avatar :)

hahah Thank you! :D That's put a bit smile on my face!

    I don't.... I fear change . It firightens me.

All the patterns I checked (over half of them) worked fine out of the box without even changing the shader to Iray.  The weave adjustments are what add the bump, displacement, and specular.  Most of the weaves are already set to matte so they render pretty fine, all of the ones I checked do use displacement but it was the same texture map plugged into the bump channel so you can take it out of displacement and leave it in bump.

It does work really well in combination with my (and I assume PD's) Iray shaders.  For the tweeked render I used my Fabric Basics Iray, went to the 03 Shine folder and chose what I wanted for gloss type and color, then went to 02 Color and changed the top to Tyrian purple to match the trousers.. and finally the 06 Tiling folder to make the pattern repeat 7 (Frabricator defaults to 10).  You don't have to change the shader to Iray Uber before doing any of that, the Mix and Match shaders do it for you.

Note: the 07 Bumpiness folder in Fabric Basics Iray adjusts normal strength so it doesn't do anything if used on Fabricator surfaces that use bump maps, you have to adjust them manually on the surface tab.

Awesome! Thank you for your work and research on this, Fisty! :D

  • Thank you guys! I've added the PD Iray Shader Kits to my wish list (as they are quite a bit out of my budget at the moment). I'll probably get the Fabricator as well - one can always use more options when kit bashing. :)

Thank you for the help! :)

One thing that's kind of hidden is the texture section. Once you apply a pattern, you can apply a fabric type, so you can create something like plaid burlap or a polka-dot sweater knit.

  • Reminder that converting displacement to Normal is very easy, either via Photoshop or http://cpetry.github.io/NormalMap-Online/

I highly recommend this for Iray, particularly for stuff where displacement isn't huge (like fabric but not asteroid surfaces)

OMG, Will. This online tool looks awesome. I can't wait to try it out.
